Impatient people have lower credit scores, study finds

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2011) ? Is there a psychological reason why people default on their mortgages? A new study, which will be published in an upcoming issue of Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, finds that people with bad credit scores are more impatient -- more likely to choose immediate rewards rather than wait for a larger reward later.

The new paper is by two economists who were working at the Federal Reserve's Center for Behavioral Economics and Decisionmaking in Boston at the time they did the research. People at the Fed are very interested in understanding how the default crisis came about. "Most often, the reasons economists put forward are, maybe there was not enough screening for mortgage applicants, or securitization, or other institutional reasons," says Stephan Meier, who is now at Columbia University. His coauthor, Charles Sprenger, is at Stanford University. "That's definitely important, but in the end humans make those repayment decisions. So there must be more psychological factors that explain how people make those decisions to default or not?"

During tax season, Meier and Sprenger recruited 437 low-to-moderate income people at a community center in Boston that was offering tax preparation help. Each person was given a questionnaire in which they made choices between a smaller, immediate reward and a larger reward later. This is a common test for seeing if people are willing to delay gratification. The questions offer different time periods and different amounts. The participants also agreed to let the researchers access their credit scores.

Impatient people had lower credit scores. A low credit score can indicate some problems with credit in the past, like failing to pay bills or defaulting on a mortgage. "Conceptually, it does make sense that how people discount the future, i.e. how impatient they are, affects their decision to default on their loans," Meier says. "Individuals accumulate debt and then have to decide whether to repay the money or use the money for something else?" If they don't pay off their debt, they will have short-term benefits -- any cash on hand is available for something else -- but the costs/problems come much later, when a landlord, mortgage lender, or someone else sees their bad credit report.

Meier acknowledges that defaulting on a loan isn't always a deliberate choice. People may default because they lose their job, for example. "But there is a little bit of strategic defaulting going on, where some people make this cost-benefit analysis" -- those individuals rather have more money now and deal with the repercussions later.

Helena Bonham Carter Talks 'Dark Shadows' Character

'She's an alcoholic psychiatrist, so I hadn't played that before,' actress tells MTV News.

We're still waiting for a teaser trailer for the hottest vampire movie that doesn't sparkle in the sun. Details about "Dark Shadows" have been scant, but one of the film's stars is finally talking about her role and what inspired director Tim Burton to take on the project.

At this week's BAFTA Britannia Awards, MTV News spoke to two-time Oscar nominee Helena Bonham Carter about "Shadows," her role in the film and what made her real-life love Burton want to director the vampire epic, which is set to hit theaters May 11, 2012. "I love 'Dark Shadows.' It's very original. It's uncategorizable," Bonham Carter said. "It's going to be impossible to sell, frankly, because it's just so ... it's a soap opera but it's very, very subtle.

It's a ghost story but then it's an unhappy vampire story. It's a mixture of so many different things and a real ensemble piece. And hopefully it will be funny."

Bonham Carter plays Dr. Julia Hoffman. In the late-'60s television soap opera on which the movie is based, Hoffman specialized in psychology and rare blood disorders and eventually tried to cure Barnabas Collins (played in the film by Burton regular Johnny Depp) of his vampirism by injecting him with a vaccine made of healthy plasma to counteract the destruction of his own blood cells by the vampire cells. (Got that?) Whether that's part of the film's plot remains to be seen, but Bonham Carter did have a colorful response for MTV News when asked about playing Hoffman.

"I did love playing her. I mean, she's an alcoholic psychiatrist, so I hadn't played that before," she said. "And she's got a secret. They all have secrets."

She also explained that "Shadows" has long been something of a passion project for Burton, with whom she has two children, because the quirky director was a huge fan of the TV show as a child. "This was a thing that he raced home to see when he was about age 10," she told MTV. "So it was returning to his childhood roots of what he loved watching."

The always outrageous actress was also pretty frank about her own feelings about the campy soap, saying, "It's actually a really bad, hilariously bad soap opera. And because it's so bad, [Burton] felt he had to make a hugely expensive movie."

Are you excited to see Helena Bonham Carter bring new life to quirky psychologist Julia Hoffman in the big-screen adaptation of "Dark Shadows"? Sound off in the comments below and tweet me at @JohnMitchell83 with your thoughts and suggestions for future columns!

Foster Care Children Fall Victim to Drug Companies (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | I always suspected that the government wasn't too spectacular at parenting children. But a November 30 report by ABC News shows that when it comes to protecting the foster children in their care, the government is spectacularly failing.

According to the report, a yearlong investigation by the Government Accountability Office has revealed that the government is not doing enough to oversee the treatment of foster children with powerful psychotropic drugs. The study of five states including Florida, Massachusetts, Michigan, Oregon and Texas shows children in the states' care receiving psychiatric medications at doses higher than the maximum levels approved by the FDA, with many children being prescribed multiple medications simultaneously. Additionally, the prescriptions of these drugs were occurring five times higher for foster children than non-fostered ones, with one third of the foster child population one at least one psychiatric drug.

Time Healthland, in its own report on the matter, stated that one quarter of children in foster care who receive disability benefits take these drugs. Though many children in the foster system do have psychiatric illnesses and behavioral issues brought about by a pattern of abuse and neglect, the major manufacturers have all been fined by the FDA for illegal marketing strategies that include marketing psychiatric drugs for unapproved use in children. There is not yet a clear picture as to what the long term impacts of this medication will be on these children.

Dr. Bruce Perry, founder of ChildTrauma Academy, says that there are many non-pharmacological interventions that have proven effectiveness in treating psychiatrically ill children. However, he says, "No one is spending billions to push them."

I am inclined to agree with his assessment, and further inclined to say that this is an issue that needs to be addressed immediately. We live in a society where children are taken away from abusive parents only to be further abused by the system. Where they're quietly turned into test cases for the drug companies. Where they're used in the process of illegal marketing strategies not to help the children themselves, but to help companies help themselves. This, we allow. And we should all be ashamed.

5 great games for people who love a good story

Rockstar Games

Whether the gamer on your shopping list enjoys a good crime saga, a swashbuckling adventure or an epic medieval tale, here are some of the video games that scratch the narrative itch.

By Winda Benedetti

Whether it?s the history-spanning tale of an assassin or?an elaborate narrative about a medieval kingdom plagued by civil war and dragons, some of this year?s best video games feature enthralling stories deftly told.

If the gamer in your life (and on your shopping list)?loves a good yarn, here are some games?that would make excellent?gifts for them this holiday.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim?? PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Rated M, $60

Bethesda

The epic medieval role-playing game "Skyrim" is so full of story you could spend months on end trying to get to the bottom of it all. Just to start with, there is the enthralling main story to dive into ? a tale about a kingdom in the grips of a civil war during a time when dragons have also suddenly reappeared. You, of course, play the protagonist ? the "dragonborn" hero whose coming was foretold.

But there is so much happening beyond this main plotline it's hard to know where to start. The numerous side quests are filled with tales of intrigue, treachery and adventure of all sorts. Want a vampire story? It's in there. How about a story about werewolves? That too.

And as if that wasn't enough, throughout this digital world you'll find books to read that tell the tales of various people and various events that have happened during Skyrim's history. This library alone could keep you occupied for days or weeks on end.

If you know someone who enjoys George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" books, then it's?a good bet "Skyrim" will be a big hit with them.

Assassin?s Creed: Revelations ? PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC, Rated M, $50

Ubisoft

If the gamer on your holiday shopping list is the kind of person who'd enjoy an epic story?that weaves the past and present together into one thrilling, history-and-globe-spanning adventure ? then look no further than this fourth game in the "Assassin's Creed" main series.

"Revelations" drops players into an ambitious tale about a man and two of his ancestors caught up in an ancient war between the Templars and the Assassins. It's a story that's set both in modern times as well as in ancient Constantinople.

Part historical epic, part sci-fi brain bender, "Revelations" delivers a story filled with vibrant characters?and an abundance of big ideas. In short, it's the kind of story you'll happily lose yourself in.

L.A. Noire ? Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Rated M, $40

Rockstar Games

Murder, betrayal, drugs and corruption ? the open-world action adventure known as "L.A. Noire" has all of this in spades plus a cool old-school 1947 Los Angeles setting that just begs to be explored.

The game drop you into the shoes of a cop returned from a World War II ? a cop who must try to get the bottom of a series of crimes using his wits, his?observational skills and his ability to get information out of people.

This is a story filled to the brim with unique, well-drawn characters stunningly rendered thanks to some amazing motion-capture technology and superb voice acting. In fact, "L.A. Noire" does such a good job weaving an intrigue-filled tale in the gritty film noir style that, earlier this year, it became the first video game ever screened at the Tribeca Film Festival.

If you know someone who loves the?film noir detective movies of the 1940s and 50s or the old hardboiled crime novels, then this?game is a must for them.?

Uncharted 3: Drake?s Deception ? PlayStation 3, Rated T, $60

Naughty Dog

For those looking for a big, cinematic storytelling and gaming experience, the latest in the "Uncharted" franchise is sure to fit the bill.

This swashbuckling tale sweeps players up into the globe-trotting, treasure-hunting adventures of Nathan Drake ? a modern-day Indiana Jones if ever there was one. This time around, players find Drake heading into the Arabian Desert on the hunt for the fabled city of Ubar ? also known as the "Atlantis of the Sands."

Of course, there are plenty of twists, turns, narrow misses, intrigue and even a little romance along the way ... making it so this game is nothing but pure adventure-filled fun.

Legend of Zelda:? Skyward Sword ? Wii, Rated E10+, $50

Nintendo

Speaking of adventure-filled fun ... there's nothing like experiencing a story that sweeps you up and takes you along on an epic voyage.?And that's exactly what "Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword" does ... while?tossing in some top-notch?Wii?Motion Plus?sword fighting to boot.

What's especially cool about this?tale is that it's an origin story that not only takes us along on an enthralling?journey with childhood friends (and Nintendo favorites) Link and Zelda but reveals the land of?Hyrule's past.

The game's film-like?cinematics do much to?help deliver a narrative that's full of magical, family-friendly adventures and lively characters as well as some truly heartfelt moments.

Of course, this is just?a short list of games that feature top-notch stories. What do you think: Which games would you recommend for someone who likes a well-told tale?

(AP) ? Sidney Crosby may have picked up a new hobby during his lengthy layoff for concussion-like symptoms: agitator.

The Pittsburgh Penguins superstar collected three assists in a 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Friday, though it was his play in front of his own net that raised eyebrows.

Crosby mixed it up with Ottawa's Nick Foligno early in the third period, the start of a brief dust-up in which Crosby and Foligno exchanged a couple of punches before teammates got involved.

Both players earned minor penalties ? Crosby for elbowing, Foligno for roughing ? and Foligno took exception with Crosby hitting him up high to clear space in front of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury.

"It's not a big deal, but it is something that he preached all summer about that we should limit that and then he goes and does it, so I was just a little disappointed," Foligno said. "But, you know, that's a small part of the game and it's over now."

So was the game following a first-period explosion by the Penguins.

Chris Kunitz, Tyler Kennedy, Steve Sullivan and Evgeni Malkin all scored within a 7:25 span to turn a one-goal deficit into a 4-1 lead, chasing Ottawa starting goaltender Craig Anderson before the period was halfway gone.

Crosby assisted on three of the goals ? including a beautiful cross-ice feed to Kunitz following a shot fake ? as the Penguins bounced back from a loss to St. Louis on Wednesday in style.

"I think we wanted to start better than we did last game," Crosby said. "It was just a matter of doing that. They scored early but we knew there was a lot of time left and we could get back into the game. Everyone responded well, and that carried over for the next two periods."

Crosby now has seven points ? two goals, five assists ? in three games since returning. He also has eight penalty minutes and not shied away from contact.

The Senators noticed. Foligno popped him cleanly in the second period, and Crosby didn't hesitate to skate into traffic.

His brief scuffle with Foligno in the third came while he was trying to protect goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, who finished with 24 stops and noticed the familiar No. 87 doing some of the dirty work just outside the crease.

"Sid stood up for me there, that was nice," Fleury said. "It's nice to have your teammates back you up."

Jordan Staal and Pascal Dupuis also scored for the Penguins while Kennedy and Paul Martin had two assists.

Kaspars Daugavins, Jared Cowen and Erik Condra scored for the Senators while Auld stopped 30 shots in relief of Anderson.

"I think the game was lost in the first five minutes by not being prepared to play," Ottawa coach Paul MacLean said. "That's my responsibility to make sure the team is ready to play."

The big lead allowed the Penguins to experiment with the lines. Crosby even played alongside Malkin and Staal for once shift, failing to produce a goal but providing plenty of opportunities.

"We play one shift, it's three terrors, we surprised them," Malkin said. "We never played (together before) and had good chances to score. I like it. It two great offensive guys who can control the puck and make passes."

The spirited first period was a welcome change for the Penguins, who have slept-walked through the opening 20 minutes ? Crosby's debut excluded ? at times this season.

Not Friday, though the Senators gave Pittsburgh a pretty early wake-up call. Daugavins collected a shot from teammate Zack Smith and slipped it by Fleury to give the Senators a quick 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game.

Their momentum lasted all of 27 seconds, or the amount of time it took Pittsburgh to tie it up following a breathtaking end-to-end rush. Crosby faked a slapshot on the break then threaded a pass to Kunitz, who fired it into the wide open net.

The Penguins were just getting started, scoring four goals over the next 7:25 to chase Anderson, who had no real chance on any of the tallies.

Kennedy gave the Penguins the lead, banking the puck off Anderson's pads and into the net from a thin angle behind the goal line.

The bad bounces didn't stop there for Anderson. Sullivan threw it in front only to have it go off the stick of an Ottawa defenseman and by Anderson to make it 3-1.

Malkin notched his seventh of the season less than 2 minutes later, ripping one by Anderson from the high slot. Anderson's night was over, and so was Ottawa's chances of ending a six-game road trip with a win.

NOTES: Fleury recorded the ninth assists of his career on Kennedy's goal. ... Ottawa the road trip with a 3-2-1 mark. ... The crowd of 18,610 was the largest in the Consol Energy Center's history. ... The Penguins travel to Montreal on Saturday while the Senators host Carolina on Sunday.

George Michael postpones tour due to pneumonia (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? British singer George Michael has been forced to postpone the rest of his European tour due to ongoing treatment for "severe" pneumonia, his spokeswoman said on Friday.

But she denied reports that the former Wham! frontman was suffering from serious heart problems and was "slowly improving" in hospital in Vienna.

"George Michael is ill with pneumonia and any other speculation regarding his illness is unfounded and untrue," she said in a statement.

"He is receiving excellent medical care; he is responding to treatment and slowly improving."

His doctors advised that the chart-topping artist behind such solo hits as "Careless Whisper" and "Faith" should postpone the rest of his Symphonica tour.

He is being treated by Christoph Zielinski and Thomas Staudinger, who said in a joint statement:

"George Michael has severe community acquired pneumonia and is being treated as an inpatient. His condition has stabilized and he is responding to treatment.

"From the current point of view, the time until recovery cannot be estimated, but he will not be able to perform the rest of the tour. Besides medical treatment, complete rest and peace and quiet are mandatory."

All British dates of his Symphonica European tour have been called off, including three this month and 11 in December.

Further announcements will be made once the gigs can be rescheduled, and ticket holders were asked to retain their tickets.

Opinion: Arsenal's van Persie rivals Messi

By JOHN LEICESTER

AP Sports Columnist

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:27 a.m. ET Nov. 24, 2011

PARIS (AP) -Robin van Persie was a better footballer than Lionel Messi in 2011. Or are statistics which suggest that misleading? Either way, this is official: It is plain absurd that the captain of Arsenal isn't a nominee with Messi for FIFA's Golden Ball award.

Seems Van Persie and injustice are bedfellows. Remember his sending off against Messi's Barcelona in the Champions League in March? Van Persie claimed he did not hear Massimo Busacca blow his whistle. Seemed plausible given the din from the 95,000-plus Nou Camp crowd. The Swiss referee didn't want to know and he ordered Van Persie off. Whether Arsenal might have won that match if Van Persie's hearing had been better and if the Dutchman had stayed on the pitch remains one of football's unanswerables.

In fact, "what if?" follows Van Persie around. That the question is posed in relation to Van Persie shows his importance to Arsenal and the London club's ambitions and future.

If the strong, reliable and intelligent scorer of goals had not hurt his knee volleying home his strike in the League Cup final in February, forcing Arsene Wenger to replace him in the second half with wet blanket Nicklas Bendtner, might Arsenal have won the trophy, instead of losing 2-1 to Birmingham?

Possibly.

If Van Persie hadn't torn right ankle ligaments playing for the Netherlands, forcing Wenger to muddle on without him for five months (he even resorted to the bottom-of-a-barrel measure of playing the ill-suited Andrei Arshavin as a central striker), might Arsenal have won the Premier League title in 2010, instead of Chelsea?

Maybe.

If Van Persie picks up another long-term injury now, will Arsenal finish out of the English league's top four places this season and not qualify for Champions League football and its financial riches next season?

Quite likely.

Will Arsenal be sorry if Wenger cannot get Van Persie to commit to a new contract before his current one expires in 2013?

Definitely.

The departure of Cesc Fabregas this summer for guaranteed trophies with his boyhood club, Barcelona, and Samir Nasri's swoon for the petrobillions of Manchester City left Van Persie, a 2010 World Cup runner-up with the Netherlands, as Arsenal's only remaining, verified world-class player. Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott are still proving themselves.

Arsenal is without a trophy since 2005. Wenger's Catch-22 is that he needs players of Van Persie's caliber to change that, but he also needs trophies, or at least a realistic hope of winning them, to keep and to attract stars.

The reported US$5.7 million Arsenal paid in 2004 for the Netherlands international looks like a bargain now. Healthy, the 28-year-old has proven as reliable as English rain. As Arsenal fans say: "We don't need Batman, we've got Robin." A basic rule shown to be true in 24 Premier League games is that the club doesn't lose when Van Persie scores the first goal.

So far in 2011, he has scored 31 goals in 29 league games. He is only the fifth Premier League player to score 30 in a calendar year. He is the English league's leading scorer this season, putting away 13 of Arsenal's 25 goals as it has awoken from a lumbering start that included a horrific 8-2 mauling at Manchester United in August.

Van Persie's success rate in the league is outstripping even Messi's in La Liga. The world's best player has scored 29 in 31 Spanish games for Barcelona in 2011.

Van Persie's strength, quick feet and polished technique so prized in the Netherlands are often cited as reasons for his goals. But the intelligent way he spots, creates and sprints into gaps in defenses is exceptional, too.

"He is always in the right place at the right moment and he got two goals again tonight from positions that look easy but they are not. He just understands the game so well," Wenger said Wednesday after Van Persie scored both Arsenal goals in a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund that qualified his team yet again for the Champions League knockout stage.

"We hope we can keep him fit and with us for a long time."

Messi should be player of the year for 2011, just as he was in 2010 and 2009. The FIFA Ballon d'Or winner will be announced Jan. 9. But there's no real suspense. As good as the 22 other nominees are, Barcelona's star is better.

Still, Van Persie should have been on that list, too.
