"Harry Potter" is top People's Choice nominee (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Nominations for the annual People's Choice Awards were announced on Tuesday, with popular films like the final "Harry Potter" and the latest "Pirates of the Caribbean" and their actors among nominees.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" will compete for favorite movie, alongside "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," "The Help" and "Bridesmaids."

The final "Harry Potter" film in the long-running series was the most-nominated movie of all, with nine nods.

Daniel Radcliffe, who plays British boy wizard Potter, and Johnny Depp, Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates" films, will compete for favorite movie actor, along with "Twilight" heartthrob Robert Pattinson, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman.

Favorite movie actress nominees include Emma Stone, who starred in civil rights drama "The Help," along with Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway and Reese Witherspoon.

The People's Choice Awards, which will take place on January 11, come at the start of Hollywood's annual season of film and television honors leading up to February's Oscars. But the People's Choice winners are judged by popular vote, not by critics or industry associations as are many other awards.

The People's Choice awards also are given in TV and music in some 43 categories. Organizers said more than 40 million people voted online or via mobile phones and social media websites like Facebook or Twitter, for their nominees.

Of the nominees, singer Katy Perry landed in the most categories, seven, including favorite female artist and favorite pop artist. She also crossed over into film with a nod for animated movie voice for "The Smurfs."

In the category of favorite female artist, Perry will compete with Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Adele. Favorite male artist nominees were Justin Bieber, Blake Shelton, Bruno Mars, Eminem and Enrique Iglesias.

In the TV arena, nominees for best network drama were "The Good Wife," "Grey's Anatomy," "House," "Supernatural" and "The Vampire Diaries."

Nominees for network comedy were Emmy-winning "Modern Family," which will compete with "The Big Bang Theory," "Glee," "How I Met Your Mother" and "Two and a Half Men." "Glee" actors including Cory Monteith, Chris Colfer and Leah Michelle all earned nods in favorite comedy actor or actress categories.

Voting ends on December 6. More nominees can be found at www.PeoplesChoice.com.

Falcons keep Colts winless with rout

Delone Carter, Brent Grimes,, Sean Weatherspoon, Curtis Lofton

By MICHAEL MAROT

updated 4:38 p.m. ET Nov. 6, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS - Julio Jones' hamstring looked just fine Sunday.

The rookie receiver caught touchdown passes of 50 and 80 yards and then set up a late field goal with a 19-yard run, leading the Atlanta Falcons to a 31-7 rout of the winless Indianapolis Colts.

After missing two games with a strained left hamstring, Jones finished with three catches for a season-high 131 yards. He added two carries for 33 yards to give Atlanta (5-3) its third straight victory overall and first road win in a series that dates to 1966.

Miami's win at Kansas City left the Colts (0-9) as the only team in the NFL without a victory. They have lost five straight home games for the first time since 2001, and this defeat was every bit as lopsided as the score made it appear.

Minus injured quarterback Peyton Manning all season, Indianapolis is in danger of falling to 0-10 for the first time since 1997, before the Manning era began.

But the Colts have collapsed everywhere, not simply at one position.

They gave up 14 points off two turnovers Sunday, were shut out on offense and went nearly 30 minutes without a first down. Plus, their top two tight ends ? Dallas Clark (lower leg) and Brody Eldridge (hand) ? didn't finish the game.

Indy has been outscored 75-14 in the first half and 120-24 over the past three weeks. The problems started early again Sunday.

Running back Delone Carter fumbled on the game's second play. Five plays after that, Michael Turner plunged in from 1 yard out to make it 7-0.

Two series later, Jones made a remarkable adjustment between three defenders to haul in Matt Ryan's 50-yard lob pass at the goal line. The officials initially ruled it incomplete before Atlanta coach Mike Smith challenged the call and won on replay. That made it 14-0 late in the first quarter.

The Falcons were just getting started.

Jones made it 21-0 when he caught a 10-yard pass and outran the Indy defense for an 80-yard score.

The Colts finally scored when Jerraud Powers made a juggling interception and returned it 6 yards for a TD.

But with Curtis Painter and the Colts' offense struggling, it didn't matter much.

Ryan threw a 1-yard TD pass to Tony Gonzalez late in the third quarter, and Jones' long run set up Matt Bryant for a 20-yard field goal early in the fourth to close out the scoring.

Ryan was 14 of 24 for 275 yards with three scores and one interception. Turner ran 19 times for 71 yards.

Painter was 13 of 27 for 98 yards with one interception, and Donald Brown led the Colts with 16 carries for 70 yards.

AstraZeneca, Targacept drug fails depression test (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? An experimental antidepressant from AstraZeneca Plc and Targacept Inc failed to meet the goal of changing a key depression rating score in the first of a series of pivotal clinical trials, in a setback for both firms.

The result, announced by the companies on Tuesday, relates to the so-called Renaissance 3 Phase III study into TC-5214, a flexible dose trial conducted in Europe.

TC-5214 -- which is viewed by analysts as a high-risk, high-reward project -- is designed to work in a novel way by modulating neuronal nicotinic receptors in the brain. Over-stimulation of these receptors is thought to be associated with depression.

AstraZeneca agreed in 2009 to pay as much as $1.24 billion for rights to the drug, including an upfront payment of $200 million, and TC-5214 has been one of the few potential bright spots in AstraZeneca's pipeline.

The setback will dent confidence in the company's line-up of new drugs, although many analysts have avoided banking on the medicine's success. AstraZeneca shares fell 1.5 percent by 0805 GMT (3:05 a.m. ET) on the news, underperforming a flat European healthcare sector.

The success of TC-5214 is more critical for Targacept, whose share price performance is linked closely to the fate of the new medicine.

The drug is the product of lengthy research at Targacept, a small U.S. drugmaker that began life as part of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co and has for years been using its understanding of nicotine to develop experimental treatments for depression and other psychiatric disorders.

The overall Phase III trial program consists of four studies for which all results are expected by the first half of 2012. Renaissance 3 is the first of these four studies. There is also a fifth long-term safety study that will last longer.

An AstraZeneca spokeswoman said the two partners would have to look at the results from the other three shorter trials before finalizing their intentions for TC-5214. Assuming the other data is favorable, the current plan is to file the medicine for approval in the United States in the second half of 2012, with a filing in Europe targeted for 2015.

TC-5214 is a tweaked version of mecamylamine, a drug introduced in the 1950s to treat high blood pressure. Researchers at the University of South Florida later began testing mecamylamine in the hope it would help children with Tourette's syndrome. It didn't, but research showed that it seemed to lessen depression in those children.

Targacept acquired a license to the drug and began developing it as a treatment for depression. Initial results have shown promise, but many depression drugs fail in late-stage trials, especially those that address new molecular targets.

Most new depression drugs today work by increasing the chemical serotonin, or serotonin and norepinephrine, in the brain. TC-5214 targets a different set of receptors.

Big East files countersuit against West Virginia

The Big East filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against West Virginia on Friday, four days after the university sued the conference in a bid to make a quick exit for the Big 12.

The conference said the lawsuit was filed Friday in Rhode Island Superior Court seeking unspecified damages along with an order requiring West Virginia to stay put for 27 months in compliance with Big East bylaws.

The latest lawsuit underscores the Big East's position "that it will vigorously pursue the enforcement of its rights and West Virginia University's obligations," Big East Commissioner John Marinatto said in a statement.

Marinatto noted West Virginia helped construct the bylaws and formally agreed to them.

A West Virginia athletics spokesman referred questions to university attorneys. A message left at WVU's Office of the General Counsel wasn't immediately returned.

West Virginia accepted an invitation from the Big 12 last week and wants to join for the 2012 season. The university filed a lawsuit Monday in Monongalia County Circuit Court. It seeks to declare the Big East bylaws invalid, claiming the conference breached its fiduciary duty to West Virginia by failing to maintain a balance between football-playing and non-football members.

No responses have been filed in West Virginia to the university's lawsuit, according to the court clerk's office.

The Big East wants to push West Virginia's exit back to July 1, 2014.

West Virginia has already sent half of the required $5 million exit fee to the Big East. The university alleged that by accepting the down payment on the exit fee, the Big East agreed to West Virginia's immediate withdrawal.

On Tuesday, Big East presidents meeting in Philadelphia agreed on a plan to add more teams to a conference also hit by the defections of Pittsburgh and Syracuse, which are leaving for the Atlantic Coast Conference. To offset those losses, the league is looking to add Boise State, Navy and Air Force for football only, and SMU, Houston and Central Florida for all sports.

The Idaho State Board of Education on Thursday gave Boise State permission to pursue membership with the Big East for the 2013 season. Boise State has yet to receive a formal invitation, but Boise State President Bob Kustra told trustees he expects one to come in the next few days.

More Info And First Impressions: Canon?s New C300 Pro Cinema Camera

IMG_3150Cinema tech isn't a big focus on TechCrunch, but with Canon it makes sense, especially when that cinema tech represents a major overlap with consumer gear. The Cinema EOS line introduced last night is just that, and I've just had the chance to get my hands on the new C300 digital cinema camera (and a little quality time with the new 1D-X as well). I also got to put a few questions to Chuck Westfall, from Canon's R&D department.

Greek PM to push coalition plan with president (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Prime Minister George Papandreou meets the Greek president on Saturday in his drive for a new coalition government to save the nation from bankruptcy and prevent its crisis spreading chaos across the euro zone.

The socialist premier is due to meet President Karolos Papoulias at noon (6 a.m. EDT), hours after surviving a parliamentary confidence vote and offering to resign.

In a late night speech to parliament, Papandreou said the new coalition should be formed to ram a 130-billion-euro ($179 billion) bailout deal through the assembly, the last financial lifeline for a nation that is due to run out of money in December.

Without saying when he would quit, Papandreou, who has led Greece through two years of political, economic and social turmoil, said he was ready to discuss who should lead the new government which would rule until elections probably early next year.

"The last thing I care about is my post. I don't care even if I am not re-elected. The time has come to make a new effort ... I never thought of politics as a profession," he told parliament before the vote in the early hours of Saturday.

Under heavy domestic and international pressure, Papandreou has backed down on a proposal for a referendum on the euro zone rescue. Greek voters could well have rejected the deal, potentially sinking euro zone leaders' attempts to stop the debt crisis devastating economies such as Italy and Spain.

THINGS MAY TURN UGLY

Greeks, burdened by waves of spending and welfare cuts plus tax rises which have pushed the country into a long recession, expressed disgust at the political wrangling up at parliament.

"What will happen until the elections?" asked Tassos Pagonis, a 48-year-old Athens taxi driver.

"I'm sick of politicians in Greece, and feel that things will now turn ugly. If only they could cooperate, everything would be much better," he said. "But will Greece be saved? I'm afraid not. Europeans don't trust us anymore, they will throw us out."

Pagonis expressed a fear widespread in the nation -- that Greece might be forced out of the euro zone to go it alone with a revived national currency. "I hope we don't return to the drachma," he said.

Papandreou's socialist government won with 153 votes in the 300 member parliament, and a rebellion by some dissidents in his PASOK party failed to materialize after he indicated that his term as prime minister was close to an end.

The leaders of France and Germany told Papandreou this week that Greece would not get a cent more of aid if Greece failed to approve the bailout, meaning that the state would run out of money in December.

Newspapers labeled Panadreou's confidence victory as little more than a deal paving the way for a new government without Papandreou. The pro-government Ta Nea ran with "New government now!"

Greece has been racked by torment since soon after Papandreou won power in 2009 and revealed that the real budget deficit was three times bigger than original estimates put out by his conservative predecessor.

International investors took fright, Greece's borrowing costs soared and Papandreou was forced to go cap in hand last year to the only bodies still willing to lend at affordable rates -- the European Union and IMF.

In return they demanded wave after wave of spending cuts, tax rises and pension cuts which provoked widespread protests on the streets on Greek cities, with bloody clashes between demonstrators and riot police in Athens.

NO RAPID ELECTIONS

Papandreou dismissed demands for rapid elections as championed by the opposition. "Elections at this moment not only equal disaster but could not take place in the best interest of the people," he said.

"There is one solution. To support the (EU bailout) deal with a multiparty approach, without elections, with a strong government."

Masamichi Adachi, senior economist at JP Morgan Securities Japan, said the main concern was what would happen when international lenders returned to Athens in the coming months to assess the progress of the austerity plan and "find them failing again".

"This is just pushing away the timing of the real problem. Of course it's welcome that Greece didn't blow up today, but it doesn't solve the problem."

Analysts said Papandreou's victory had been Pyrrhic, and many ordinary Greeks said they were disenchanted with Byzantine political wrangling that was not addressing their basic need for jobs and cash.

Sources said Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos has won the backing of leaders of some smaller parties to support a new coalition that he would head. The new government would call early elections in a few months after the bailout was secured, sources close to the deal told Reuters.

The leaders of the far-right LAOS party and another center-right party indicated after Papandreou's speech that they would cooperate in a new coalition.

In parliament, Venizelos said a new government should rule until next February and then call elections.

Opposition leader Antonis Samaras counted his New Democracy party out of the coalition, saying Papandreou had spurned his call for a national unity government. "Mr Papandreou rejected our proposal. The only solution is elections," he said.

China aid to Europe should await workable plans: c.bank adviser (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China should await workable plans from Europe before Beijing puts money into any bailout package, an adviser to the Chinese central bank said on Friday, adding that China should insist on "certain controls" over how the money will be used.

Li Daokui told a forum in Beijing that China would also likely work with other BRICS countries, namely Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa, in possible moves to help Europe overcome its debt crisis.

"If we (China) inject money, we must have certain controls. We cannot say that we give you money and you spend the money at will. You are the rich, you borrow money from the poor. It's not right for you to continue to lead a luxurious life," Li told reporters.

Li, who is also an economics professor at Tsinghua University, sits on the 15-member monetary policy committee of the central bank but does not have real influence on key decisions on interest rates and the yuan.

China must look at Europe's evolving sovereign debt crisis closely as the region is China's largest trading partner, he said.

"We should pay high attention to economies of the U.S. and Europe as we live in a globalised economy. If Europe runs into trouble, it will not be a small issue for China," Li said.

Intense European pressure forced debt-stricken Greece to seek political consensus on a new bailout plan instead of holding a referendum after EU leaders raised the prospect of a Greek exit from the euro to preserve the single currency.

"For Europe, we cannot look on and not help," Li said, but added that a media report that quoted him as saying China could buy $100 billion in European bonds was just a "theoretical figure."

Most of China's $3.2 trillion foreign exchange reserves had already been channeled into foreign assets -- mainly in the United States and Europe -- which help stabilize global markets, Li said.

Li added that Greece's possible exit from the euro zone could be a "disaster" but he reiterated his view that the U.S. fiscal health is worse than Europe's.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, speaking at a daily briefing, said Beijing supports the steps Europe has taken and hopes it takes "proactive measures to overcome the present difficulties, stabilize global financial markets and push for Europe's recovery and growth".

SLOWER GROWTH IN 2012

Li forecast a modest narrowing of China's trade surplus this year to $150 billion to $160 billion, or about 1.6 percent of gross domestic product. The surplus as a percentage of GDP, he said, could dip further to nearly zero in the next two years.

That means the yuan will face less pressures to appreciate, creating conditions for China to forge ahead with reforms to introduce greater currency flexibility, he said.

"Conditions for pushing market-oriented exchange rate reforms are gradually ripening," he said without elaborating.

On the domestic economic front, Li said China's gross domestic product growth is expected to slow to 8.5 percent in 2012 from an estimated 9.2 percent in 2011, and said China should maintain its current economic policies through 2012.

"We should keep policy steady and maintain stable economic growth. Inflation has been clearly slowing," Li said.

But he added that China should fine-tune its monetary policy according to changes in external environment.

Li said that China now faces favorable conditions to carry out exchange rate reforms but gave no details.

Donovan, Galaxy?advance

updated 3:02 a.m. ET Nov. 4, 2011

CARSON, Calif. - David Beckham says he's having the most enjoyable season of his five with the Los Angeles Galaxy. The only thing that would make it better is a championship.

The Galaxy moved one step closer to making that a reality Thursday night, when Landon Donovan scored on a penalty kick in the 74th minute and Los Angeles beat the New York Red Bulls 2-1 to advance to the Western Conference final.

The Galaxy will be will appearing in their third consecutive conference final after winning the two-game series with a 3-1 aggregate goal total, including their 1-0 win in Harrison, N.J., on Sunday.

"I haven't even thought about what's next after this," said Beckham, whose contract with the Galaxy is expiring. "Right now, I'm just thinking about the moment and winning a championship."

The Supporters' Shield winners have a quick turnaround, facing Real Salt Lake on Sunday in a rematch of the 2009 MLS Cup. Los Angeles has the benefit of hosting the match at Home Depot Center, where they are unbeaten this season (13-0-5).

Entering Thursday's game, Los Angeles needed a win or a draw to move on. Luke Rodgers quickly made things interesting by putting the Red Bulls ahead less than 4 minutes in, tying the aggregate at 1-1.

"I thought it was one of those games where we were going to score a lot of goals," Rodgers said. "We should have won that game tonight. But it wasn't meant to be."

Mike Magee scored for the Galaxy in the 42nd minute on a header off Beckham's corner kick. It was Magee's second goal in as many games after he scored the winner in the first leg of the series.

Beckham took a hard fall onto his back during an attempted header midway through the opening half. He went to the ground on a couple of occasions in visible pain and later came off the field as trainers checked on him.

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena briefly thought Beckham might have to be substituted. Instead, the rejuvenated English star left his mark with a patented set piece minutes before halftime.

Beckham, who was second in the league with 16 assists, sent in a perfectly placed corner that met Magee's head and carried past Frank Rost's outstretched arms to level it 1-1.

"We started off badly. It wasn't what we planned," Beckham said. "The way we adjusted ourselves showed the character of this team."

The Galaxy were awarded a penalty kick when New York defender Roy Miller shoved Beckham down from behind in the box. Donovan, the Galaxy's captain and leading scorer, stepped up and finished left as Rost dove right. The goal provided the final dagger in a series marked by physical play and trash talk from both sides.

"Some of that stuff, it's just the way it goes," Donovan said of the back-and-forth verbal jabs. "I have a lot of respect for their team and think they played a great series."

Rodgers added to the drama with his first career playoff goal to quiet the lively Home Depot Center crowd in the opening minutes. Thierry Henry played a through ball as Rodgers got behind the defense and slide it home.

On the ensuing kickoff, Rodgers made a hard challenge at Beckham's ankles, earning a yellow card. It resulted in some pushing and shoving from both sides, reminiscent of teams' postgame scuffle in the first meeting.

Rodgers later had a chance to put the Red Bulls ahead in the 58th when he broke clear of the defense, but his left-footed attempted sailed just wide of the post.

"We felt we had a great start. We worked hard as a team," Rodgers said. "It's tough to swallow."

New York's Rafael Marquez and Juninho of the Galaxy missed the match while serving suspensions for their roles in the scuffle. Major League Soccer announced Thursday it had added two additional games to Marquez's suspension, citing his "violent and aggressive" conduct.
