US economic growth slower than expected

The economy grew much slower than previously thought in the second quarter as business inventories and exports were less robust, a government report showed on Friday, although consumer spending was revised up.

Gross domestic product growth rose at annual rate of 1.0 percent the Commerce Department said, a downward revision of its prior estimate of 1.3 percent. It also said after-tax corporate profits rose at the fastest pace in a year.

Economists had expected the latest reading of GDP to be revised down to 1.1 percent. In the first quarter, the economy advanced just 0.4 percent. The government's second GDP estimate for the quarter confirmed growth almost stalled in the first six months of this year.

Jan Hatzius, chief economist at Goldman Sachs Group, told CNBC that he now thinks that there is ?a one in three? possibility of another recession.

The United States is on a recession watch after a massive sell-off in the stock market knocked down consumer and business sentiment. The plunge in share prices followed Standard & Poor's decision to strip the nation of its top notch AAA credit rating and a spreading sovereign debt crisis in Europe.

While sentiment has deteriorated, data such as industrial production, retail sales and employment suggest the economy could avoid an outright contraction.

William Larkin, portfolio manager with Cabot Money Management in Salem, Mass., said the GDP report was ?in the gray area. It was ugly, but not a disaster. Had it been under 1 percent we'd have more of a psychological reaction.?

In a key speech at an annual economic conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Friday, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke proposed no new steps to boost the economy, but did hint that Congress may need to act to stimulate hiring and growth.

In other economic news, U.S. consumer sentiment sank in August as consumers lost confidence in lawmakers' ability to stave off the threat of another recession, a survey released Friday showed.

The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's consumer sentiment index edged up from its mid-August level but was still consistent with recession-era lows. The index has only been lower in three other surveys, which were taken in April and May 1980 and November 2008.

The final August reading on the overall index of consumer sentiment was at 55.7, down from 63.7 the month before. It was slightly better than August's preliminary reading of 54.9, which had been the lowest level since May 1980.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast a reading of 56.0.

Story: Bernanke proposes no new steps to boost the economy

"Consumers have shifted from being optimistic about the potential impact of monetary and fiscal policies to a sense of despair and pessimism about the role of the government," survey director Richard Curtin said in a statement.

Recent political wrangling over raising the U.S. debt ceiling appeared to take its toll. Spontaneous negative references to the government were made by 25 percent of respondents, above the prior record of 20 percent in April 2010.

The downward revisions to second-quarter growth came as businesses accumulated less stock than previously estimated. Business inventories increased $40.6 billion instead of $49.6 billion, cutting 0.23 percentage point from GDP growth during the quarter.

However, the slow build-up of inventories means goods are not piling up on shelves, which should support growth in the third quarter. Excluding inventories, the economy grew at a 1.2 percent rate.

Output was also curbed by exports, which grew at a 3.1 percent pace instead of 6.0 percent. Imports increased at a 1.9 percent rate rather than 1.3 percent. That left a slightly wider trade deficit and trade barely contributed to GDP growth. Trade had previously been estimated to have added 0.58 percentage point to overall output.

Story: Parts of Obama jobs package coming into focus

The drag from business inventories was offset by consumer spending, which was revised up to a 0.4 percent rate from 0.1 percent. The increase in spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity, was still the smallest since the fourth quarter of 2009.

Business spending was revised to a 9.9 percent rate of increase from 6.3 percent as investment in nonresidential structures and equipment and software was stronger than previously estimated. But there are fears that the recent stock market rout could make businesses a bit hesitant to spend on capital and hiring.

The report also showed that after-tax corporate profits increased 4.1 percent in the second quarter after edging up 0.1 percent in the first three months of the year. It also showed inflation pressures abating, with the personal consumption expenditures price index rising at a 3.2 percent rate. That compared to 3.9 percent in the first quarter.

The core PCE index closely watched by the Fed advanced at a 2.2 percent rate, the largest increase since the fourth quarter of 2009. It was revised up from 2.1 percent.

Casino attack in Mexico's Monterrey kills 53 (Reuters)

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) ? Armed men killed at least 53 people in an attack on a casino in northern Mexico that left it ablaze with patrons trapped inside, officials said.

One survivor said the group of masked gunmen burst inside the Casino Royale in the prosperous industrial city of Monterrey on Thursday afternoon and threatened gamblers, then sprayed gasoline on the carpets and set fire to the place.

Another witness said people stampeded after hearing blasts inside the casino shortly after the attackers stormed in. Many patrons ran to hide in the toilets but died from asphyxiation as smoke engulfed the casino, a rescue official said.

Rodrigo Medina, governor of Nuevo Leon state, told the Televisa television network that 53 people were killed, and rescue teams warned the death toll could rise. It was one of the worst attacks in a major Mexican city in many years.

Monterrey is a relatively wealthy city of about 4 million people and was for many years seen as a model of economic development but it has been ravaged by violence over the past two years as Mexico's drugs war has escalated.

President Felipe Calderon called the attack a "barbaric act of terror" and vowed to keep fighting organized crime.

About 42,000 people have been killed in the drugs war across Mexico since he took office in late 2006 and deployed troops against the drug cartels.

Rival drug gangs are fighting for control of Monterrey, which lies 230 km from the Texas border, and they routinely extort casinos and other businesses, threatening attacks if the owners refuse to pay up.

Televisa said there were reports that up to 20 more bodies might still be trapped in the debris of the casino. Paramedics and firemen pulled out bodies covered with plastic bags from a hole in the wall of the casino as night fell.

Relatives of people trapped inside the building lined up to demand information while others used social media to start their own searches.

"My wife came here for a celebration ... She was having dinner with her friends," a weeping, unidentified man told Milenio TV.

"My sister was working inside as a waitress," said another man. "I know nothing about her, there is only confusion."

National security spokesman Alejandro Poire said the government would do everything within its reach to stop the violence and capture those responsible for the casino attack.

Rescuers used an excavator from a nearby construction site to break through a casino wall to search for victims.

Twitter users in Monterrey reported scenes of chaos on the streets around the Casino Royale after the attack and heavy army presence.

Casinos have become popular in Mexico and a number of them have been attacked in recent years. Milenio newspaper said on Thursday that a casino in the state of Coahuila was attacked by a group of armed men.

HTC Vigor poses for a couple of spy shots, reveals little

So it turned out that render of HTC's Vigor on a Dutch online store wasn't exactly kosher; but what might be are two spy shots that Droid Life obtained today, providing us with what would seem to be the first legitimate glimpse of the Verizon-bound, LTE-toting smartphone. Gracing its derriere is a texturized backplate, which sports the usual self-explanatory "WITH HTC SENSE" label along with a large lens plus dual LED flash; whereas on the other side we see a front-facing camera along with four capacitive buttons. Whether or not it'll arrive with the also rumored 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage remains to be seen, but you'll know more when we do.

use QuickBooks. Quicken is a waste of time and money. If you use QuickBooks, even though there are helpful, at least a small understanding of basic accounting. This way you will not get all the ?features? that make even a waste of time erwischt.Wir customers only the basic features they need, everything else will use all confused again, full of double entries, etc. If only the magazine, you can register your credit cards and bank accounts, comparisons, etc. simple things that you do not have problems haben.Viel luck! : 0)

Russian Progress Launch Failure Raises Questions About Access to NASA's ISS (ContributorNetwork)

An accident has caused a Russian Progress cargo ship that was headed for the International Space Station to fail to reach orbit. The Progress subsequently burned up in Earth's atmosphere.

There will be no immediate effect to the crew of the ISS. Supplies on board the space station are always kept sufficiently to ride out one such accident. However the loss of the Progress may have profound implications for the future of the ISS, in only the second month of what the Russians once boasted of being "The Age of Soyuz."

Because of President George W. Bush's decision to end the space shuttle program, which occurred last July, the only method to send astronauts to and from the ISS is on board the Russian Soyuz, the launch vehicle for which has a lot in common with the one that failed with the Progress.

Russia will likely suspend further Progress flights, according to RIA Novosti. That leaves the European ATV, the Japanese HTV, and the coming commercial vehicles, such as the SpaceX Dragon, as means to resupply the ISS.

A Russian Soyuz is scheduled to arrive at the ISS with for a change of crews in about four weeks. The status of that mission as of this writing is unknown, but it would not be surprising if it were delayed pending an investigation of the Progress failure.

There has already been some second guessing about the end of the space shuttle program four years before the scheduled start of commercial crew operations. United Space Alliance Vice President and SSP manager Howard DeCastro has ruminated that ending the space shuttle program when it was, before an American alternative was ready, made on technical sense, according to NASA Spaceflight.

DeCastro is correct, but also irrelevant. The decision to conclude the space shuttle program was purely budget based. The funding this freed up were suppose to pay for the Constellation space exploration program to send astronaut explorers beyond low Earth orbit, starting with the moon, as well as to pay for a capsule spacecraft, the Orion, and a commercial alternative for resupplying ISS.

But President Obama abruptly canceled Constellation and went all in with the commercial option. Now there is some doubt that even the commercial option will get adequate funding as the budget deficit balloons long past $1 trillion.

The Obama administration, with a little help from the Bush administration before it, has stumbled and blundered into a situation in which the future of American space flight is in doubt. Congress seems unable on its own to address the problem. Will the next president be able to? Only time and the next election will tell.
