Knicks Beat Mavericks, 104-94: Carmelo Anthony Thrives As New York Stays Unbeaten

NEW YORK ? Carmelo Anthony scored 31 points and the New York Knicks improved their best start in nearly two decades to 4-0 with a 104-94 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night.

Reserve JR Smith added 22 points for the Knicks, the only unbeaten team in the NBA. They hadn't been perfect after four games since the 1993-94 team started 7-0 en route to the NBA Finals.

The Knicks averaged 104.7 points and allowed just 85.3 per game while routing Miami and sweeping a home-and-home series from Philadelphia to start the season, but didn't seize control of this one for good until nearly the midpoint of the fourth quarter.

O.J. Mayo scored 23 points for the Mavericks, who had their three-game winning streak snapped and lost to the Knicks for just the fourth time in the last 22 meetings.

Playing without injured starters Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Marion, the Mavericks had shot 60 percent in consecutive games for the first time in franchise history and were averaging 116.3 points on 56.2 percent shooting during their win streak.

But they managed only two more field goals after Mayo's layup cut the Knicks' lead to 90-86 with 7:32 remaining. New York scored the next eight points, five from Anthony, to pull away.

New York finished with eight 3-pointers after making an NBA-record 43 in its first three games.

In the first meeting since Jason Kidd left Dallas to sign with New York, he played only 16 minutes as the Knicks went with Smith, who got hot in the third quarter while they opened an 84-78 lead.

Kidd seemed on the verge of returning to the Mavs in July before signing with the Knicks. Owner Mark Cuban was angry, believing Kidd backed out of a deal, and said before the game he was done talking about the point guard.

With Kidd joining Tyson Chandler, the Knicks have two starters from the Mavs' 2011 NBA championship team, a club the aging Knicks mentioned often during the preseason as a team that showed older groups could win.

Chandler provided the game's first double-digit lead at 96-86 with a ferocious follow dunk and free throw after being fouled, screaming in the direction of the Dallas bench after the basket.

Anthony scored 10 points in the first quarter as the Knicks took a 25-23 lead. Mayo opened the second with consecutive 3-pointers, and seven straight points by Vince Carter later in the period gave Dallas a 41-32 lead. The Mavericks were ahead 57-55 at the break.

Notes: Marcus Camby made his season debut after sitting out the first three games while getting back in shape. He missed most of the preseason with a strained calf. The center became the fourth-oldest player in Knicks history at 38 years, 7 months, 18 days ? with two of the older ones coming this season. Herb Williams, now a Knicks assistant, was 41, 2 months and 16 days in his final appearance. Kurt Thomas is 40 and Jason Kidd is 39. Rasheed Wallace (38-1-23) rounds out the top five. ... For their heroic actions during Superstorm Sandy, the Knicks honored Jon Candelaria of New York, and Dr. Pradeep Mally, Gail Geraghty and Erica Chong of NYU Langone Medical Center with this month's Sweetwater Clifton "City Spirit" award, named for the team's first African-American player and recognizing those who have made a difference in the lives of others. Candelaria rescued a driver who was stuck in a stalled taxi that was nearly submerged by water, while the hospital employees carried infants to safety after the facility lost power. ... Both teams wore special blue shooting shirts with red and white and stars surrounding the NBA logo as the league celebrates Veterans Day this weekend.

Storm stories: ?kicks us while we?re down?

Just as utility companies in the Northeast fixed power lines and some residents regained heat and electricity, another powerful storm rocked the New York area on Wednesday, sparking fears that the region could again plunge into darkness and freezing temperatures. Yahoo! News invited residents to share their short anecdotes and photos from the nor'easter. Here are some excerpts:

New winter storm kicks us while we're down

MONROE TOWHSHIP, N.J.?This week's nor'easter began as a freezing rain. By the time it left the Northeast, it had dumped anywhere from several inches to more than a foot of snow, adding to the misery of those still without power from Hurricane Sandy.

Monroe Township, where this photo above was taken, received about six to eight inches. Some parts of New Jersey lost power again, after just getting back service after the hurricane.

But many people are still in the dark going into their second week. Gasoline is getting easier to find, which is a boon to those heating their homes with portable generators.

However, there have been several local fatalities from carbon monoxide poisoning from generators used with inadequate ventilation. Some residents in northern Jersey have been told it could take until early December before power is completely restored.

So many transformers have been destroyed that the power companies cannot get enough replacement parts. A forecast for warmer temperatures this weekend should make life a little less miserable for those affected.

Nor'easter disrupts Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts

QUEENS?One week we have a bad hurricane, and the next week we have snow.

The snow, combined with wind, has slowed down the utility repairs. A number of people in areas like Long Beach, Long Island, the Rockaways, and coastal areas of New Jersey are without power. Heavy snowfall such as this can cause branches to snap and fall on above ground power lines.

Normally, snow like this wouldn't be such a bad deal, but when you're dealing with big populations without light or power, it can be life-threatening. If the snow fall is bad enough, it may also slow the delivery of much-needed supplies.

Storm brings more snow, shivering commute to New York

MANHATTAN?In midtown on Wednesday night, people waited in the snow, shivering in the deepening cold for a bus while New Yorkers like me rushed to the subway to get home. The sidewalks were slippery, ankle-deep slush submerged parts of the streets, and the snow was sticking. Wet snow coated the debris left behind by Hurricane Sandy. A few door attendants shoveled snow from the sidewalks making a secure walkway for people.

After Hurricane Sandy battered the city last week, most New Yorkers felt they deserve a break from the crazy weather. Citizens who reside in lower Manhattan and in the storm-ravaged areas now had to suffer a setback in its Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts because of this storm.

Nor'easter bears down on storm-weary New York

BROOKLYN?The MTA is still in the process of recovering, with multiple lines still not running normally or at all. Many of my colleagues just returned to work on Monday after a week in which, at best, they were stranded in their homes without a working subway system or gas for their cars and, at worst, they lost those homes entirely. The city is pouring considerable resources into trying to get everything up and running, and another major storm certainly isn't welcome right now.

The idea of once again losing the service of the just-repaired subway lines that are running is not an appealing one?especially with temperatures continuing to drop. Therefore, I'm viewing the fluffy snowflakes currently falling outside my window with less than my usual delight.

Storm divides Northeast into two groups: haves and have-nots

DENVILLE, N.J.?There are two types in northern New Jersey right now during the nor'easter: the have and the have-nots. Those of us who have power are sheltering friends and family and doing our best to support our neighbors.

Many, however, refuse to take refuge in the homes of friends or family. They feel they would be an imposition or cannot bring pets. People who know better are freezing in their homes as a nor'easter dumps up to six inches of snow here in the New York-New Jersey region. Those who have power are hoping we don't have additional outages. It's very cold and there is a biting wind that is howling outside.

Snow is piling up here in Morris County and the roads are a mess. The schools already called for a 90-minute delay Thursday morning?after having missed so much school already. The lights have flickered and the trees look heavy with wet snow.

Sandy's aftermath in New Jersey makes nor'easter doubly hard

ESSEX COUNTY, N.J.?Hurricane Sandy hit us hard here in New Jersey, just west of Manhattan. We did not get a lot of rain from the storm, but the wind did us in.

Fast-forward to this week. Our building has no heat or hot water due to a power failure with the electric pumps that power the boiler. This is lovely for us, as we have been sitting in the cold for longer than one week. I have three children, a newborn, a 1-and-a-half-year old, and a 6-year-old so it has been a nightmare trying to use a small electric heater to heat a two-bedroom apartment. It makes you want to cry because your kids are cold and all you can do is give them blankets and dress them as warmly as possible.

School final reopened today, and many children in my son's kindergarten class were absent. Some people will not have power until Nov. 9 and tensions are flaring in those areas because of a winter storm that is occurring today. I have talked to a few residents about Sandy. Our friend's roof caved in after a large tree smashed into it. He still has no power and has two children who had to go to their grandma's in a neighboring county to stay because it is too cold for them to be without heat.

The debris clean-up has been slow. There is a lot of debris in our neighborhood such as broken glass, shingles, siding, toys, trash cans, garbage, and a lot of tree limbs. It will take a week of two before the area will return to normal again. Sandy hit the area hard but we will all bounce back soon.

9:06 p.m.

Like a Hurricane Sandy encore

FREEHOLD, N.J.?I am writing this in the midst of yet another blackout. On Oct. 29, Hurricane Sandy hit my hometown of Freehold. That was only nine days ago. I was without power for an entire week.

Now, just four days after power was restored, I am sitting here in the dark again. A nor'easter is currently dumping snow on my neighborhood. There are six inches of snow on the ground, and it is still coming down. The snowstorm caused a transformer explosion, knocking out power on my block. Trees weakened by Hurricane Sandy are falling under the weight of snow. More and more of my neighbors are losing power by the minute. Fortunately, I still have gasoline leftover to run my generator. But I will have to buy more gasoline tomorrow.

Residents in Freehold were just getting back to normal when this nor'easter arrived tonight. People are relying on generators for power again. They are burning wood to stay warm. And tomorrow morning, they are going to need gasoline to run their snow blowers too.

Some of my neighbors rely on well water. But without power for the pumps, they have no water. For this reason, they left town during Hurricane Sandy. If power is out too long, they will have to leave Freehold again.

Warm Paint Colors for Office | Home x Garden

Colors are divided into two groups: warm and cool colors. Cool paint colors tend to make your house look more modern and cold feeling. Warm paint colors, on the other hand, make your home look more traditional, lighter and welcoming. There are many different warm paint colors that can transform any dark, cold room right into a bright, warm one.

Warm Paint Colors 300x300 Warm Paint Colors for Office

Warm Paint Colors

Paint your office to reflect your business, to set a tone for visiting clients and to make a space where you can be creative and productive. While your paint color choices are wide open with a home office, you may need to rein in rampant creativity for any corporate setting.

Paint Colors for Formal Spaces

Choosing warm colors for painting the interiors of the office is a very suitable option, particularly if your office is the type in which the environment is very business like and stresses on discipline and decorum a great deal. A formal color tone is what you need if your organization handles formal issues like finance, banking, insurance. For such relatively formal offices, given below are three color options.

Deep Brown and Cream

This really is one of the eternal favorites when it comes to painting an office space. You could have all your walls painted in cream, except the one which is behind the desk. You can have that one painted in a rich, deep brown, bordered with cream panels. About this wall, you can place all certificates, awards, trophies, etc. on glass shelves. The desk and other furniture in the office should match the brown from the single wall. Also, the drapes or blinds could be a combination of both the colors. Office lighting is usually white, so you can fancy it up a bit with some designer lampshades in cream.

Deep Maroon and Olive

An execllent warm combination for a formal work place is that of a deep maroon with a light tone of olive in it. Maroon is a warm color, however, you cannot use it on all walls of your office. That will give it a really dull and foreboding appearance. So, you can alternate the walls with maroon along with a light shade of olive to help keep the balance right. Furniture can be inside a neutral black or deep brown. Keep your walls plain, without any major designs or patterns.

Rust and White

Warm Paint Colors for Office

Rust is a great warm color that can brighten up an office space, even if a single wall is painted utilizing it. You can have one wall in every room painted in a bright rust color, and also the others painted in white. Reserve the rust wall for just about any notices, announcements, posters, photographs, etc. that you would like to put up in the office. It?ll draw the focus towards the wall and also the upbeat color will lift the spirits from the employees.

Yellow

The color yellow promotes pleasant and cheerful feelings. Yellow can be used in home offices or in a workplace that is informal. Avoid using yellow inside a formal office as many people perceive yellow as childish. My Space Designers notes that yellow is assigned to intellect and energy.

Purple

The color purple encourages creativity. Purple is calming towards the mind and nerves. According to My Space Designers, purple is assigned to wealth, power and luxury. Purple paint combined with black furniture creates a dramatic decor. Many people dislike purple and it can be related to gloominess.

Gray

The color gray provides an increased feeling of sophistication. According to Projeto Gallery, gray is regarded as an executive color. It is a neutral color that may be combined with a variety of color schemes. Gray represents intelligence.

Bob Woodward to receive award from Colby College

(AP) ? Washington political reporter Bob Woodward will receive Colby College's annual Elijah Parish Lovejoy Award for courageous journalism.

Woodward will receive the Maine school's award during a Sunday ceremony at the liberal arts college in Waterville.

The Lovejoy Award has been given annually since 1952. It honors the memory of Elijah Parish Lovejoy, an 1826 Colby graduate who was killed in 1837 in Alton, Ill., while defending his abolitionist press against a pro-slavery mob.

Regarding Maine politics, Woodward said independent Sen.-elect Angus King should continue Maine's long tradition of independent senators. Although Sen. Olympia Snowe, Sen. Susan Collins and former Sen. William Cohen are Republicans, he said they acted like independents.

Climate Change Action and More Drilling Likely in Obama's Second Term

President Barack Obama secured a second four-year term in yesterday's vote. What is the likely outcome of that historic event on energy and environmental issues? Simply put: more of the same. Let me rephrase that slightly. Obama will likely stay the course on his current energy and environmental policies. That means more executive orders like the one that raised vehicle fuel efficiency standards, and continued progress on regulatory efforts to restrain greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollution from coal-fired power plants. Even if Nobel Prize-winning Secretary of Energy Steven Chu leaves the administration, as has been rumored, innovative programs such as the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy will continue to attempt to invent a future of cleaner energy. And the Department of Energy as a whole will continue to push forward with its "all of the above" energy strategy, which will encourage the rise of shale gas but also continue federal support such as tax credits and loan guarantees for big alternative energy projects, from solar power to nuclear. Both energy and environment merited brief mentions in Obama's victory speech. He spoke of "freeing ourselves from foreign oil," a dream of every American president since Richard Nixon. That will mean more oil and gas drilling in the U.S., perhaps more responsibly done on public lands than what Mitt Romney promised. Already, U.S. oil production is on the rise, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and imports have fallen below 45 percent for the first time in more than 30 years. Major government oil users, such as the U.S. Department of Defense, will also likely continue their bid to promote alternative fuels, such as jet fuel made from biomoass (plants) or natural gas. Obama defeated Romney in large part due to a coalition of the young, women and minorities such as blacks and Hispanics. All will be owed action on key issues: immigration reform, holding the line on reproductive rights and, yes, some kind of action on climate change. After all, a second term means the Obama administration will have to carry out U.S. commitments made in climate talks at Copenhagen and Durban to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 4 percent below 1990 levels by 2020 and to craft a global agreement by 2015 to combat climate change. "We want our children to live in an America that isn't burdened by debt, that isn't weakened by inequality, that isn't threatened by the destructive power of a warming planet," Obama said--a key reason he earned the endorsement of New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg in the wake of global warming-exacerbated Superstorm Sandy. The mention of a "warming planet" was a departure from Obama's silence on climate change throughout the campaign. One idea to reduce the debt burden *and* combat climate change is known simply as a carbon tax. Many versions of the idea exist but all boil down to a tax placed on fossil fuels based on the greenhouse gases emitted when they are burned. Such a tax could ensure reductions in the CO2 emissions causing climate change, spur innovative energy technologies ranging from CO2 capture and storage to geothermal power, and help balance the budget while potentially reducing other taxes. But Republican control of the U.S. House of Representatives makes such a tax seem unlikely. That means the biggest chance to reduce U.S. emissions--a process already under way--remains turning off old coal-fired power plants and replacing them with new ones that burn natural gas, a switch that is already occurring thanks to low prices for the gaseous fossil fuel as a result of fracking. Obama's second term may not slow the rise of the oceans or begin the healing of the planet--as predicted in an earlier victory speech--but it will give the two-term president a chance to secure his legacy as one of the greenest chief executives in U.S. history. That may include ending subsidies to the fossil fuel industry or even putting more solar panels on the White House like former President Jimmy Carter did, as promised. At the very least, it should include talking more about the defining energy and environmental challenge facing the United States according to President Obama: climate change. ?

Compound Living: What? You Adopted?

The phrase we have heard the most since adopting the boys is:

"I didn't know you were looking to adopted!"

To which I respond:

"Neither did I"

We were not looking to adopt.???But God had other plans and through a bunch of random coincidences in life we found ourselves?once again heading down the road of adoption.

The short story of how this came to be: Three years ago we change churches.? I decided to take the?nursery job at our church. Though?the church and my job?I become good friends with others who foster and adopt.? We decided to form an adoption/foster support group. (my eldest is adopted).? One day someone mentioned that they heard a set of twins in?need of a?home, just a passing?comment in the middle of a conversation about foster care.

But that comment sat with me and sat with me.? And I prayed and talked with Matt and prayed and then....

I sent an e-mail

.....to the adoption agency and two weeks later we were chosen by the birth parents?to adopt their babies.???

So in away I feel like adoption choose us.?? Matt and I have always been open to growing our family in what ever way God presents and it is amazing what He will do.

It really was all so fast it is kind of a blur.?

The babies were born at 25wk and through a variety of unfortunate circumstances the birth parents who love the boys dearly made the best decision for the babies and that was adoption.? The rest of that story is for my boys.?

But by this point the boys were 2 months?and the NICU was desperate to get a family?in their holding the babies, loving on them and learning how to care for them before they were discharged.?? And that's were we came in.

Matt holding Jonathan for the first time

Within days we went from no thought of adoption to daily visits to the NICU, filling out an incredible amount of paper work, scraping together the finances and preparing our house not only for bring home twins but also to be certified as a foster home for the in term between the babies being released and our adoption paperwork being filled out and?filed?(totally complicated since we didn't have a home study or anything).

Nana holding both boys for the first time (until now she had only held one at a time)

?

?

?

Aunt Karlee came along to hospital to help hold babies too!

?

Mama holding Jonathan with no tubes or oxygen for the first time.? Still had monitors but this was a big day!!!

There were so many sleepless nights I am surprised we survived, but we did get the house?ready and the paper work done in time?for?David's release from the hospital.? Which then presented a whole new set of problems.? With one twin home and one twin at the NICU I was now having to leave one to go see the other.? And not just anyone could or wanted to watch my little 5lb baby that seemed more breakable then he was.???

Since the kids are not allowed in the NICU this was the first time they got to meet David.?

But God is good and two weeks later we brought Jonathan home and with that started our "private" life as a family of 8.? Because we were under foster care laws we couldn't share the babies with the world yet.?

David and? Jonathan together at home!!

And that was the beginning of our 5 months on the roller coaster that is adoption.

Natural Remedies: Prevent and Treat Heartburn and Acid Reflux

The most common digestive disorder people experience is heartburn, which is highly associated with acid reflux. Understanding how heartburn occurs is essential to those diagnosed with acid reflux. Eating habits or lifestyle factors should be changed to prevent heartburn associated with acid reflux. Unhealthy eating or eating excessively at one time can cause improper movement of the gastric juices in the lower portion of the esophagus, causing possible heartburn to occur.

Heartburn or acid reflux needs treatment, especially when a nighttime attack happens. Nigh time attacks have similar daytime attack symptoms except that nighttime attacks include snoring, restlessness, fatigue, and even abnormalities in breathing. Attacks during the night are more severe than attacks during daytime.

Many people with heartburn or acid reflux understand the cause of their condition. However, there are still many people lacking essential knowledge of how heartburn acid reflux can be triggered.
