Pryor included in NFL draft, must sit out 5 games (AP)

Terrelle Pryor will have an opportunity to pursue his NFL dreams, with one significant caveat: The former Ohio State star must still pay for breaking NCAA rules while he was in college.

The league announced Thursday that Pryor is eligible for its supplemental draft, but he won't be allowed to practice for the team that selects him until Week 6. Pryor gave up his final season with the Buckeyes following an investigation into the team's memorabilia-for-cash scandal.

He would've had to sit out five games had he chosen to return to Ohio State.

"We accept that voluntarily," Pryor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told The Associated Press. "It's a small price to pay for him to have a chance to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL."

A small price that could have broader consequences.

Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith worked together on the decision, Rosenhaus said. The league hopes it will dissuade future college players who run afoul of the NCAA from trying to use the NFL as a means of escaping punishment. But it also creates this dilemma: Does the NFL have the authority to suspend a player who doesn't even work for the NFL yet?

"I know players are concerned about the message this sends," said Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, a member of the players' executive committee. "Granted, making this `deal' was an individual decision made by a player with counsel from his agent and lawyer. They have every right to make whatever deal they want for his personal future. That being said, the general concern now is how far into Pandora's box this may go.

"This raises so many questions, and I think players are rightfully concerned."

The league informed clubs that Pryor "made decisions that undermine the integrity of the eligibility rules for the NFL draft." Among those actions, the league said, were the hiring of an agent in violation of NCAA rules and a failure to cooperate with the investigation that cost Ohio State coach Jim Tressel his job. The NCAA committee on infractions is working to determine the school's final penalties.

League spokesman Greg Aiello tweeted you can't break the rules as Pryor did "and get a free pass into the NFL."

Goodell did not confer with NCAA President Mark Emmert on the decision, said Bob Williams, a spokesman for the college sports governing body. The commissioner "called Mark to inform him of his intent. Nothing more," Williams said.

One of the points of contention during negotiations for a new NFL labor agreement was the authority given to the commissioner to hand out punishment. In the end, there were no changes to Goodell's position, but his decision to suspend Pryor worried players.

"It's a little questionable, but I guess they're really trying to not allow guys to manipulate the NCAA system and be able to take a quicker path to the NFL," said Bills safety George Wilson, an NFLPA representative. "I see what the commissioner's trying to do at his end as well, but it's still tough to take."

"It's still a tough pill to take, knowing that you're being suspended for something that took place while you were at college. But we'll see what happens."

David Cornwell, Pryor's attorney, said he was pleased that quarterback is eligible for the supplemental draft ? which was his "primary objective" ? although having to sit out five games was not the ideal situation.

"The NFL's concern all along was protecting the integrity of the draft process," Cornwell said in an email to the AP. "We understood their concerns, accept that they are legitimate concerns, and worked through the process to demonstrate that Terrelle's decisions regarding making himself eligible were reasonable, if not perfect. The commissioner gave serious consideration to the various issues and decided to balance those issues by allowing Terrelle into the supplemental draft with conditions."

Cornwell said it was "not a perfect result," but it was evidently good enough for Pryor, who tweeted: "God bless and thanks for support! Time to have a little fun!"

Pryor will have a pro day Saturday in Pittsburgh for all 32 NFL teams, and he'll work out, throw and take part in agility drills ? similar to what he would do at the NFL combine. Once he's drafted, he'll be allowed at team headquarters and be able to take part in meetings for whichever team drafts him.

"He's putting all of this behind him and he has learned a lot from the mistakes he has made in the past and is excited about starting fresh and getting his career going," Rosenhaus said. "As soon as he gets picked, he'll be on an airplane and be going right to work."

Other players eligible for the supplemental draft are: defensive backs Torez Jones of Western Carolina and Tracy Wilson of Northern Illinois, defensive ends Keenan Mace of Lindenwood and Mike McAdoo of North Carolina and running back Caleb King of Georgia.

The supplemental draft allows qualified underclassmen who did not request early entry into the regular draft to have a chance at entering the NFL. Teams submit picks and are awarded players if their bid ? for which round they would take that player ? is highest. Teams then lose the corresponding pick in next April's draft.

The supplemental draft was supposed to be held Wednesday, and Pryor's name was not on the NFL's initial list of players. But it was postponed a few days, and Pryor's name showed up on Thursday.

If he hadn't been ruled eligible, Pryor would have had to wait until next April for the 2012 draft.

Regarded as the nation's top quarterback recruit coming out of high school, Pryor led Ohio State to an 8-1 record as a starter and was Big Ten freshman of the year. He took the Buckeyes to the Big Ten title the following season and a victory in the Rose Bowl. He was named the game's MVP after Ohio State beat Oregon 26-17.

As a junior, Pryor had his best season statistically, throwing for 2,772 yards and 27 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He also ran for 754 yards and four scores while helping the Buckeyes win the Sugar Bowl.

Shortly before the game, it was revealed that Pryor and other players traded Buckeyes memorabilia for cash and discounted tattoos. In the following months it became clear that Tressel knew about the improper benefits in the spring of 2010 but didn't inform his bosses, as was required under his contract and NCAA rules. Tressel was forced out of his job May 30 and Pryor left Ohio State soon after.

Now, Pryor will get a chance to start his NFL career ? even if it happens in Week 6.

"I'm proud of him," said Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes, a former Ohio State star who was wearing a red Buckeyes cap Thursday. "I thought he did a great job while he was there. The things that he had to overcome thus far can be pushed behind and hopefully he can start a better career here in the NFL."

What Gay Men Should Expect From Relationships

Some gay men put up with a lot in their relationships. their long-term partners will aggressively flirt with other men in front of them, go home with a guy from the bar without any forewarning, sleep with ex-lovers without gaining consent from their current lover, or brag to their current boyfriends about the quality of their sex with strangers.

Here?s what I find most concerning. Some gay men don?t feel they have a right to be upset about these behaviors. They?ll ask me why they feel so jealous and how can I help them let go of their jealousy. they think that the gay community believes in sexual freedom and it isn?t cool or manly to object to their partner?s sexual behavior.

In other words, they feel shame for experiencing hurt by the actions of their long-term partners.

Heterosexual couples get plenty of social support for treating their partners with respect when it comes to sex. Outrage is the typical social response when friends are told about poor relationship behavior among straight people. when gay men tell the same heartbreaking stories they are less likely to get a big response. Gay relationships are not given the same level of validity.

I?m not making an argument here for monogamy in gay men?s long-term relationships. Men can have open relationships and still treat each other with great care and consideration. Gay men have led the way on redefining what defines a caring open relationship. Check out my blog entry entitled Gay Men and Open Relationships: What Works? for more on that position.

The point I am making is that if you feel jealous about your partner?s sexual behaviors with other men, you need to validate those feelings. those feelings are common and normal and deserve respect from both you and your partner.

There is plenty of research in psychology to back up the theory that an important reason we enter into relationships is to heal some of the old wounds we experienced in our earliest relationships with our parents, siblings, and peers. if your family had trouble providing you with emotional support as a child then one of the best ways you can heal from that loss is to experience deep emotional support from your adult partner. Most people are really hungry for this experience.

Couples that don?t acknowledge that their relationship needs plenty of care, conversation, and consensus will hurt each other. Rather than helping to heal old wounds, these relationships just keep reinjuring. Psychotherapists call this attachment wounding.

If your friends are telling you that you are putting up with too much from your boyfriend, it?s often a sign that you are in a codependent position in your relationship. Codependence can be defined as compulsively taking care of other people rather than taking care of ourselves.

Here?s the very least you should expect from your partner:

? your partner should apologize when he discovers that he dropped you emotionally. maybe not right away, but eventually.

? your partner should not be harshly criticizing you, teasing you, or putting you down. if he does this occasionally he should be sincerely apologizing after each incident.

? your partner should never hit you. Period.

? being drunk is not an excuse for mean behavior.

? You deserve kindness from your partner. not at every single moment, but on a regular weekly basis. This is really the whole point of being in a relationship.

If this topic resonated with you might want to check out the classic book on codependency: Codependent No More by Melody Beattie.

If you are tolerating unkind behavior then I urge you seriously reevaluate your relationship. Seek out individual or couples counseling if you need help in making the changes to create supportive, healthy relationships.

How To Get Great Boat Insurance | Fire House Wine

Coverage of a watercraft can range from total replacement of the vessel if destroyed, to personal liability coverage, and everything in between. There are many ways to choose the best insurance policy that is right for you, but one of the main things you have to do is think about your needs and risks. What are you willing to spend for them? We will show you how to find the best insurance deals

Full coverage boat insurance is the safest route for the boat owner who wants to insure his valuable property. With full coverage the boat owner can opt to ensure the cost of replacing the vessel if it is totally destroyed. This will also mean that you will get insurance coverage for both the interior and exterior of the boat, as well as the engine and other things ?under the hood?. Coverage for loss or damage to personal property while on the vessel may also be included. Other options can include injury protection, salvage or wreck removal, loss of use reimbursement, towing costs, and even investigative services.

Liability insurance covers you in the case of accident responsibility. Generally a boat owner can choose either boat liability, also known as indemnity insurance, which will cover only damages done by the vessel, or personal liability, which will cover damages done by the boat owner, regardless of where or how they occur.

Now I know a lot of you are considering getting liability insurance because it is extremely cheap. While this is true, you need to remember that it will only cover third party damages and repairs which can be a problem is certain situations. To give you an example of why this might not be great is if you get in an accident and you were at fault, your insurance company will pay for the repairs of the other person?s watercraft, but they will not pay for the cost of the repairs for your watercraft. The reason for this is because the replacement would cost way more than what you are actually paying for the premiums.

After reading this short report, you should have learned some valuable information when it comes to selecting the best insurance for you and your boat. I have been in your situation and I know how frustrating and stressful it can be. The truth is, even if everything doesn?t go perfectly it doesn?t matter. Just remember in the end don?t ever pay more for insurance than you think you can actually afford.

Finding the optimum marine cargo insurance and yacht insurance is hard. Just follow the advice above to get a great deal.

Obama attacks GOP field on bus tour

(AP) ? Hitting back against an emboldened GOP, President Barack Obama launched a rare direct attack Monday on the Republican presidential field, criticizing his potential 2012 rivals for their blanket opposition to any deficit-cutting compromise involving new taxes.

"That's just not common sense," Obama told the crowd at a town hall-style meeting in Cannon Falls, Minn., as he kicked off a three-day bus tour through Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois.

"You've got to be willing to compromise to move the country forward," the president said later in the day as he delivered the same message at a town hall in Decorah, Iowa.

At the same time Obama was forced to defend his own record as Iowa voters asked him about all the compromises he's made with the GOP.

"I make no apologies for being reasonable," Obama declared as he stood in front of a cheery red barn, surrounded by bales of hay.

The president recalled a moment in last week's GOP presidential debate when all eight of the candidates said they would refuse to support a deal with tax increases, even if tax revenues were outweighed 10-to-1 by spending cuts.

Obama didn't mention any of the candidates by name, and prefaced the remark by saying, "I know it's not election season yet."

But his comment underscored that election season is indeed under way. The bus tour, although an official White House event rather than a campaign swing, is taking Obama through three states he won in 2008 but where he now needs to shore up his standing. It's giving him a chance to return to the grassroots campaigning that helped propel him to the White House, and shed his jacket and tie to mix it up with voters in coffee shops and lunch joints far from the Beltway ? as he did in three unscheduled stops Monday, including one in a tree-lined Minnesota town where he was swarmed by enthusiastic kids.

The president is traveling in an imposing new $1.1 million bus, outfitted with tinted windows and flashing lights, that the Secret Service purchased.

In Iowa, Obama returned to a state that handed him a key victory over Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton in their nomination fight but where Republicans have now been blanketing the state in preparation for its first-in-the-nation caucuses, attacking the president at every turn. The bus tour came on the heels of Rep. Michele Bachmann's weekend victory in the Iowa Straw Poll and Texas Gov. Rick Perry's contest-rattling entrance into the race.

It also came after the president spent much of the summer holed up in the nation's capital enmeshed in bitter, partisan negotiations on the debt crisis that cratered his approval ratings and those of Congress amid a faltering economy and high unemployment.

The president got a rosy reception from his Minnesota audience, but Iowa voters were a tougher crowd, demanding to know why he'd compromised on principles important to Democrats, and asking to hear his plans for dealing with intransigent Republicans.

The president responded by pledging to present a specific jobs plan to Congress when lawmakers return from their summer recess in September. "And if they don't get it done, then we'll be running against a Congress that's not doing anything for the American people and the choice will be very stark and very clear," the president said.

At both town hall meetings, Obama used questions on his health care bill to take hard shots at Mitt Romney, the GOP front-runner who has had to defend implementing a health care plan while governor of Massachusetts that's similar to the federal version.

"You've got a governor who's running for president right now who instituted the exact same thing in Massachusetts," Obama said, referring to a central component of his law ? the requirement for nearly everyone to carry health insurance.

"This used to be a Republican idea," Obama said. "It's like suddenly they got amnesia."

The so-called individual mandate in Obama's health care law was struck down by a federal appeals court last week, but Obama expressed confidence that the Supreme Court ultimately would uphold it if justices follow existing law and precedent.

One woman told Obama she was recovering from lung cancer and had slept in her truck for two days to ask him a question about Social Security, although the president missed the chance to sympathize with her about her health when he responded with a defense of Social Security.

The woman, Lois Dare, 53, expressed disappointment later that Obama didn't acknowledge her situation.

"I need help," she said. "I was hoping he would have said, 'Let me take some information down and go back to the White House.'"

Obama began his remarks at the town halls with what's becoming a refrain: criticizing Congress, accusing lawmakers of putting politics ahead of the country and calling on voters to tell them to cut it out.

"You've got to send a message to Washington that it's time for the games to stop," Obama said.

Appearing in Cannon Falls, Minn., ahead of Obama's town hall, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus rallied a few dozen tea party members and College Republicans.

"We won't stand idly by while he uses our hard-earned tax dollars to spin his failure to put America back to work," Priebus said.

Between his events in Cannon Falls, Minn, and Decorah, Iowa, Obama logged miles of heartland highway in his bus, making several unannounced stops. First, it was lunch at the Old Market Deli in Cannon Falls with five Minnesota military veterans who served after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. Then it was coffee at the Coffee Mill in Zumbrota, Minn., where one patron, Wayne Gadient from Goodhue, Minn., had some encouraging words for the president: "I think he's doing the best he can do with what he has to work with."

And finally the president stopped stop in Chatfield, Minn., pulling up before a colorful array of children from the Valleyland summer camp who stood on the sidewalk in the tree lined town. They held homemade signs: "we (heart) Obama" and "Honk if you're the president."

On Tuesday the president holds what the White House is billing as a "rural economic forum" in Peosta, Iowa, near the Illinois border, where he'll be joined by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, a former Iowa governor, to announce several initiatives for rural areas. He'll wrap up Wednesday with town halls in Atkinson in northwestern Illinois, and then in nearby Alpha, Ill., before returning to Washington.

On Thursday he flies with his family to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts for his annual summer vacation.

From Hiroshima to Fukushima, An Ugly Journey, News And Society ...

The tsunami of 2011 has caused the worst nuclear disaster in Japan's Fukushima and this can be the saddest tragedy the country suffered after 1945 when a single bomb struck Nagasaki. According to experts, the radiation readings at the Fukushima site have reached alarming levels. This disaster has triggered a serious debate about the safety of nuclear energy. This being the case, there is no wonder people shiver at the very thought of the devastation that can be caused by nuclear weapons.

'Deep sadness': Japan marks surrender anniversary

Japan marked the 66th anniversary of its surrender in World War II on Monday with somber remembrances across the country and a memorial in Tokyo led by the emperor. The ceremonies come as the country struggles to recover from this year's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Emperor Akihito, whose father made the unprecedented 1945 national radio address announcing the war could not be won, offered prayers for the dead and hopes for peace at Monday's memorial in Tokyo. Prime Minister Naoto Kan also attended.

The annual ceremonies cap a series of remembrances of the war's disastrous final months. Gatherings are also held each year for the anniversaries of the bloody battle of Okinawa in June and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, both in early August.

"We again feel a deep sadness for those who died and for their families," Akihito said before a bank of yellow and white chrysanthemums erected in memory of the dead. "Looking back on history, we fervently hope not to repeat the tragedy of war."

This year the memorial was particularly poignant for Japan, which is struggling to recover from the magnitude 9.0 March 11 earthquake and tsunami that left more than 20,000 people dead or missing, touched off a nuclear crisis and caused scenes of destruction reminiscent of the devastation seen in 1945.

Story: Giant tent being built over Japan nuclear reactor

Kan said Japan should use its experience in rebuilding after its World War II defeat as a lesson that it can recover from the March disaster.

"Since the war, our nation has overcome many difficult times," he said. "Using this experience, the devastated areas, and our nation itself, will recover strongly from the disaster."

While the anniversary in Japan is an inward-directed occasion to remember and honor its own dead, the day continues to evoke bitter memories across Asia of Japan's brutal militarist exploits.

Revisionism?
Visits by senior politicians to a Tokyo war shrine on the anniversary have often inflamed those lingering wounds and are closely scrutinized around the region. The Shinto shrine honors the 2.5 million Japanese war dead, including Class A war criminals such as Hideki Tojo, and is seen by many as a center of Japanese revisionism.

But for the second time, Kan stayed away from Yasukuni this year.

Last year ? when Kan was still new at the helm and trying to improve ties with Japan's Asian neighbors ? was the first time since the end of World War II that the entire Japanese Cabinet avoided visiting Yasukuni on Aug. 15.

Instead, Kan officially laid a wreath Monday morning at a different war memorial in Tokyo that is not associated with Yasukuni.

At Monday's main service, held at a martial arts and concert hall, he reiterated Japan's remorse for the suffering it caused in Asia.

"We caused great suffering and pain to many countries, especially in Asia, in the war and we must deeply reflect, while paying our respects to the many victims and their families," he told the 7,200 people who attended.
