High School Football: La Mirada top-seeded in Southeast Division

La Mirada High School landed a top seed in the CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division playoffs as postseason pairings were announced on Sunday.

The Suburban League champion Matadores (8-1) will be joined by seven other area teams in this year's playoff field. La Serna (9-1), which captured the Del Rio League crown, landed the Southeast's second seed.

Arcadia (4-6), which took third place in the Pacific League, will visit La Mirada in a first-round game scheduled for Friday.

La Serna will host Hacienda League team Diamond Ranch (7-3), which was granted the Southeast's lone at-large bid.

The Southeast playoffs also include Santa Fe (6-4) and California (8-2), which finished second and third respectively in the Del Rio.

Santa Fe has a first-round date at Bonita (5-5), the second-place squad from the Hacienda.

"We're excited to have the opportunity to be in the playoffs, and excited to have the opportunity for our team to play another week," Santa Fe coach David Pierson said. "Bonita could have easily been a first-place team from the Hacienda. They look well-coached and it looks like a good matchup."

California also has a road trip as it takes on Pacific League champion Muir (7-3).

"They're definitely good," Condors coach Jim Arnold said of Muir. "They went undefeated (7-0) in league. They will present a real challenge for us. They've got great athletes. We have to play well."

The Southwest Division

bracket features Freeway League champion La Habra (7-3), which will host Sunset League at-large team Los Alamitos (6-4).

Olympic League champion Whittier Christian (7-3) is at home against Torrance (5-5), the Pioneer League's third-place team, in a Northwest Division first-round contest.

"It's going to be a tough game," Whittier Christian coach Sergio Gradilla said. "Torrance is a good football team. They're physical and they run a double-wing offense. We don't play against double-wing teams that often so we're going to have to be prepared as best as possible. We just have to do the best we can to stimulate it in practice but it's going to be tough.

"We're coming off a good victory. Hopefully, we continue to get better and play well on Friday night."

Schurr and Montebello, the second- and third-place squads from the Almont League, will both be visitors in Mid-Valley Division first-round games.

Schurr (4-6) travels to San Marino (9-1), which finished in second place in the Rio Hondo League. Montebello (6-4) visits El Monte (7-3), the second-place squad from the Mission Valley League.

"We're very happy to be in the playoffs," Montebello coach Pete Gonzalez said. "Our players worked extremely hard. We know we're playing against a good football team. We're going to have our hands full but we're excited to have the opportunity."

All first-round games are scheduled for Friday.

Tim Tuttle: Johnson, Keselowski deliver more intensity at Texas; more thoughts

Jimmie Johnson now leads Brad Keselowski in the Chase standings by seven points.

Matt Pearce/Icon SMI

Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski went head-to-head for the win and the lead in the Chase for the Sprint Cup in a green-white-checkered finish Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway. It was a dramatic conclusion befitting what has developed into an epic confrontation between a five-time champion in Johnson and NASCAR's newest star in Keselowski.

They restarted on the front row, leader Keselowski on the inside. They ran side-by-side through turns one and two before Johnson's No. 48 Chevrolet was able to clear Keselowski's No. 2 Dodge and put it in his rear view mirror. It was Johnson's second straight win in the Chase.

Johnson's win at Martinsville a week before had moved him to the front in the points by two over Keselowski. He was able to expand it to seven at Texas with eight Chase races complete and two remaining.

After last year's Chase, in which Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards tied in points after running one-two, respectively, in the finale at Homestead-Miami and Stewart won the title on the tiebreaker with the most wins, it seemed unlikely, perhaps impossible, that we would see another Chase run at such a high competitive level anytime soon, maybe never. Johnson and the No. 48 team and Keselowski and the No. 2 team are racing and delivering a Chase with the same intensity, skill and determination.

"The gloves were off and it was bare knuckles fighting," Johnson said.

Here's five things we learned at Texas.

1.There's no room for mistakes in this Chase.

Keselowski was leading, two seconds in front of Johnson, when a caution came out with 60 laps remaining. He led the lead-lap cars down pit road and slid through his pit box to the far side. It forced him to back up to get around Danica Patrick, pitted directly in front, and he restarted ninth.

Keselowski charged up to fourth before the next yellow. He decided to take two tires on the right side and vaulted ahead of second-running Kyle Busch, Johnson and Clint Bowyer, who all took four tires, into the lead.

Keselowski held the lead through two restarts. He and Johnson appeared to make contact on the second in turn four with nine laps to go, but Keselowski was remarkably fast on two tires and pulled into the lead.

It was the final caution that caught up to Keselowski's gamble to take two.

"I thought I had it, but we kept getting all them yellows and giving them more shots," Keselowski said. "I knew I wasn't going to be able to execute every restart and Jimmie did a great job on the last one. I had to chose between wrecking him and winning the race and that didn't seem right.

"I ran him hard and kept him honest. I know if we keep running like this, we won't be beat."

Johnson timed the restart well, the nose on his Chevrolet slightly ahead of Keselowski's at the start/finish timing line. Johnson also pinned Keselowski farther to the inside than the previous restart and used better momentum to make the pass exiting turn two.

"I think our cars were pretty equal throughout the race," Johnson said. "We were on four (tires) and I had to take advantage of it. The second to last restart was pretty sketchy, a couple of times how close and how hard we were racing. But we brought the cars back and got another restart.

"I had a great restart and once I got by him, I knew we had the speed if we could just get in front."

2. Clint Bowyer's outside title hopes ended.

Bowyer finished sixth and ran in the top-five for most of the race, but he fell 36 points behind Johnson and seems destined for third place in the championship. The Michael Waltrip Racing driver has a win, four top-fives and seven top-10s in the eight Chase races.

"We were close, but no cigar.," Bowyer said. "That's what we were all about tonight. The one thing that could have won us the race just didn't play out with the cautions. I really felt like we were doing a good job with our fuel mileage thing. I thought we were sitting pretty good there until that caution came out with 26 (laps) to go. That being said, you can't be greedy. We could have had right-front (tire) trouble again like we did earlier. Solid night.

"It's just unbelievable. You keep having these top-10 runs and flirting with the top-fives week-in and week-out, and unless you're winning these races every week you just can't gain points. Even if we were winning right now, it ain't enough to run them down for a championship."

3. Kyle Busch has been building momentum for 2013 in the Chase.

Busch led 80 laps and finished third at Texas, his fifth top-five in eight Chase races. It won't diminish the fact he didn't make the Chase, but it is evidence the No. 18 team hasn't lost its will to succeed.

"You've got to continue to work hard and strive to get better," Busch said. "For missing the Chase by what we did, yeah, we had a lot of technical problems, but I'm sure there were a few races where we could have finished better. So, we've got to get better in every opportunity that we can.

"This last 10 weeks have been pretty good. We've run well. We've been fast. We've shown speed. Maybe we've been third to fifth or third to sixth-place cars. Tonight I felt like we were a winning car if we could have gotten out front. I think track position meant that much, which we'll say that every week. It's just a matter of continuing to evolve and get better as a team and communicate because this car is obsolete in two weeks. So we'll work on all of that stuff in 2013."

4. Danica Patrick finished a Sprint Cup career-best 24th.

Working with crew chief Tony Gibson in their first race, Patrick's Chevrolet was the last car on the lead lap. It was her ninth career start in Cup.

"It was a great day and a great weekend for the first weekend working together," Gibson said. "Qualifying went really well, and practice went really well. She had an awesome race, and she did a great job. We did the wave-around twice and got back on the lead lap early, and she stayed on the lead lap. She ran with guys that she's never run with before: Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman and Denny Hamlin. To come here and run on the lead lap and a shot at a top-20 was pretty impressive."

Patrick's previous best was 25th at Chicagoland in September.

"We had a really nice first weekend together," Patrick said. "It was really steady from the beginning. The GoDaddy Chevy unloaded, and it had speed right off the get-go. We just kept on improving with it. I felt like it was a nice progression of the weekend, where I actually felt like I knew I why I went faster and I knew why I went slower. In the race, we were creeping along. We spent most of the race tight, but there late in the race we finally got it freed up enough to start really running some good speed."

5. Chevrolet wins 700th Sprint Cup race.

Johnson's victory lifted Chevrolet, the all-time leading winning manufacturer in the Cup, to another milestone. Johnson has 60 of them. Fonty Flock drove Chevrolet to its first victory in Cup on March 26, 1955 at Columbia Raceway in Columbia, S.C.

Silverman: NFL Firing Season Right Around The Corner

The NFL has been a win-now business for decades.

But it is written in bold type this year.

There?s a chance that as many as 14 NFL coaches could be in trouble as the second half of the season begins for some teams and the first half ends for others.

Here are the coaches that are in the most critical position at this point in the year.

Andy Reid, Philadelphia ? It seems that five of the NFC?s postseason spots are already spoken for and the Eagles do not have one of them. If they are going to get the sixth, they are going to have to rebound from their turnover-laden start. The heat was on the Eagles and Reid before the start of the season. On paper, they should be the Giants? biggest challenger in the NFC East. But when Michael Vick can?t hold on to the ball and it seems that the 2012 season has picked up where the 2011 season left off, it?s too much for owner Jeffrey Lurie to take. The Eagles will not only have to make the playoffs, they will have to win a game if Reid is going to hang on to his job.

Marvin Lewis, Cincinnati ? The Bengals have loads of talent and should be good enough to challenge Pittsburgh and Baltimore in the AFC North. However, after getting off to a solid 3-1 start the Bengals have lost three in a row and confidence in the Cincinnati locker room is at a low point. Lewis has been around 10 years in Cincinnati and is neither imaginative nor inspiring. He doesn?t seem to have the ability to turn a sinking situation around.

Rex Ryan, N.Y. Jets ? His players like him and play hard for him and owner Woody Johnson continues to support Ryan, but what happens if the Jets can?t take advantage of a favorable second-half schedule? It?s going to be hard to justify keeping him around if the Jets can?t play consistently nasty defense and at least get the offense to function at a workable level. They will be challenged by the Seahawks and Patriots in the coming weeks, but they should have a good chance to win the rest of their games. If they don?t, it can be quite warm for Ryan.

Norv Turner, San Diego ? The sky is constantly falling in around Turner. When it comes to leadership, few in San Diego believe he is championship timber. If he doesn?t make the playoffs in a division that includes two weak teams like the Chiefs and Raiders, there?s no chance he will retain his job. He?s probably the first coach to get canned this year.

Ron Rivera, Carolina ? A year ago, Rivera and the Panthers seemed to be climbing in the NFL. However, Cam Newton has taken a step or two backwards in his second year and Rivera can?t seem to get him back on track. While that?s the responsibility of offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, Carolina owner Jerry Richardson is an impatient man who will put the blame on his head coach.

Jason Garrett, Dallas ? When you work for Jerry Jones, the pressure is always going to be high. The Cowboys have been in most games this year and they still have a chance to rescue their season. However, it seems that the combination of Garrett and quarterback Tony Romo will not get the money when it is on the table. Whether it?s because of the finger of Dez Bryant landing on the end line as it did against the Giants in Week Eight or a much more egregious gaffe, something always goes wrong.

Chan Gailey, Buffalo ? This seemed to be a long-shot at best when the Bills hired Gailey, but they looked like they could challenge for a playoff spot when they brought in Mario Williams to upgrade the pass rush. Unfortunately for Gailey and defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt, it has not worked out. The Bills can?t stop anyone when it matters and Gailey is not the coach to turn this around.

Romeo Crennel, Kansas City ? The Chiefs appear to be the most disorganized, poorly functioning team in the league. Kansas City made the mistake of thinking Crennel was the right man for the job because the Chiefs? players picked up their intensity when Crennel became the interim coach at the end of last season. That has obviously meant little as the Chiefs have not had the lead in any game this season. Their one victory came as the game-winning field goal was kicked in overtime.

Sean Payton, New Orleans ? Payton is not on the firing line as he sits out this season because of the Bountygate scandal. The Saints need him badly. However, he signed an extension at the end of last season and the NFL has ruled that the extension was not valid. That will make him a coaching free agent at the end of the season. If Jerry Jones comes calling, Payton may very well listen.

Jim Schwartz, Detroit ? After making the playoffs last season, the Lions were expected to make a big push for the NFC North title. Schwartz?s team lacks discipline, and the Lions rarely play a complete game for 60 minutes. The lack of consistency is going to fall on his head and if Detroit does not rebound in the second half of the season, it?s going to be a struggle for him to keep his job.

Which NFL coach is most likely to get the boot?? Sound off below?

The Four Pillars of Fitness | Thoughts From the Mind of Bob Choat

Many fitness professionals have focused on one aspect of being fit.? The personal trainer is mainly focused on exercise fitness.? The nutritionist is focused on nutritional fitness.? The psychologist, hypnotherapist and the life are focused on mindset.? Some doctors are focused on sleep.? While each component is important, it?s time to put them all together in order to realize the full fitness component.

In today?s world it seems that many people will neglect at least one part of what I refer to as ?The Four Pillars of Fitness?.? Each pillar supports the dome of fitness.? While it seems that, for example, fitness is enough, it?s not.? One pillar is never enough to keep fitness going.? To be truly fit and strong it takes all four pillars, just like the Greek Parthenon and it?s pillars holding the top for many a millennium.

The first pillar of fitness is mindset.? Mindset is the driver of fitness.? Without it, no action will take place.? Yes, granted, someone with a bullwhip can get you going in eating right and working out.? Though, you probably won?t sleep and stress will be high.? Part of mindset is also reducing stress.? Stress reduction is key to reducing cortisol levels and increasing leptin.? So are other components, as you will discover.? Additionally, you gotta want to get fit.? It starts with your mindset that leads to your motivation to do everything else.? Oh, the mind is so wonderful when use to its full potential.

The second pillar of fitness is diet and nutrition.? While you can exercise to burn off fat and lose weight, in certainly doesn?t compare with a good and healthy diet.? Even after exercising, a recovery nutrition is important.? Healthy foods is also important for brain health.? Cortisol can affect our brains as much as our bodies.? Foods have a direct affect on mood.? Vitamin B-12 has a direct affect on neuronal health.? And we all know the importance of high quality protein to help feed muscles for growth.? Heck, it?s needed in all of our cells.? You gotta eat right in order to get your body right.

The third pillar of fitness is exercise.? Sufficient and consistent exercise is important for fully vitality, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, bone health and more.? Those that keep their bodies going will keep going throughout their life.? Strength exercises are important to help build muscle and high intensity exercises are important for cardiovascular health as well as ramping up your metabolism (fat-burning).? After each exercise session it?s important to stretch.? It help keep your body going as well as keep your arteries flexible.? You may have seen older people who walk with short steps and slow, right?? It?s because they?ve lost flexibility as well as muscle strength, which also affects balance.

The fourth pillar of fitness is sleep.? In today?s fast-paced world and long commutes, more people are getting less and less sleep.? At the end of the 19th Century, the average person slept 9+ hours.? Today it?s under 7 hours.? And getting worse.? Sleep is vital for brain recovery and health. Since the brain has a direct affect on the body, sleep is a key to fitness.? Those that don?t get enough sleep also will have shorter telomeres.? These are the endcaps of DNA.? Think of the endcaps of shoelaces.? What would happen if they are gone?? Well, they would unravel.? It?s the same with DNA.? When that happens, cells can no longer reproduce and death will happen faster.? So will aging.? Sleep has many more important functions.? And that?s for another article.

It is very important to incorporate each of these pillars into living a fully fit life.? Take out one or two and your building becomes weaker.? You can get help from professionals in each one of these areas that will help you build a powerful and fit self, mind and body.

Much success in your fitness life.

Bob

Seniors World Chronicle: INDIA : A piece of Mumbai at the UN

MUMBAI , INDIA / THE METROGNOME / SOCIETY / OCT 20, 2012

By Vrushali Lad?

A slight and unassuming man, Sailesh Mishra (45) comes across as soft-spoken and pliable. But then he begins to describe how he got associated with the senior citizens episode on Aamir Khan?s TV show Satyameva Jayate. ?I got a call from Aamir Khan Productions in September 2011. A woman called saying that she wanted to meet me for an episode they were shooting on senior citizens for the show. Since we get many such requests (at his Mira Road-based NGO Silver Innings), I asked them to send me a letter and then we?d see.

The letter was brought the very next day, while the director of the show explained the concept of the episode in detail. But I soon realised that they were planning an episode to show elderly people as sad, abused, dependent human beings. I immediately told the lady, ?Please tell Mr Khan that if this is what you want to portray on the show, I don?t want to be a part of it.?

Sailesh has always been a champion of the ?happier side of old age?, which was why he started his NGO, Silver Innings, in 2008, as a means to help create a ?sustainable gerontology?. He explains, ?We often berate those who we feel are not taking care of the elders in the family. But you must understand, most children are not bad, they don?t wilfully neglect their parents. It is just that there are not enough options created by the government and society when it comes to elder care. Unlike in the West, we don?t have such services as assisted help for the elderly, or a service to provide groceries, or cooked food, or do other chores. We don?t even have enough NGOs that work for the causes of the elderly.?

Sailesh?s NGO was registered with the United Nations? Open Ended Working Group (OEWG) on Ageing convention held annually in New York, last year, owing to the efforts of Susan Somers of the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA). ?I got the opportunity of participating in the 3rd such OEWG held this year. On the opening day, the Indian ambassador gave a rosy picture of the current scenario of health care for the elderly in India. He even had the nerve to say, ?Why do the elderly need rights? Their development is the responsibility of the society and their families. What can the government do???

To Sailesh?s huge amazement, he got the chance to make a statement on the floor of the House. ?Only six people got a chance to speak that day, and I was the first,? he beams. ?I gently but firmly refuted what the Indian ambassador had said, and I stressed the need for the government to be more proactive in implementing several schemes for the elderly in India. I didn?t see him for three days after that!? (Read Sailesh?s statement made on the floor of the House here.)

Of the member states, Costa Rica and Argentina were the most passionate about promoting the cause of gerontology, he says. ?These two would even hold a briefing for NGOs every morning. But the EU and the US were extremely against the state having a stake in elders? care, because they do not want to spend on it.?

An interesting dimension to this issue, he says, is that the Western countries, while reducing budgets assigned to social welfare, are aggressively studying the family concepts prevalent in south Asian countries, where parents and their children live together all their lives. ?But by contrast, we in India are going towards the Western concept of nuclear families and even smaller units. Where does that leave our elders??

But what he took away from his UN outing was the ?inspiration? he felt after meeting people who had been working for the cause of elder care for decades. ?Meeting such dedicated people tells you that you are on the right track, and that you still have so much to learn,? Sailesh says.

His own brush with the elderly

In 2004, Sailesh was working with the Dignity Foundation, a time that he says was when he ?accidentally came into this field.? He says, ?Through the Foundation, I was sent to Neral to help in the building of the elders? township. I found that getting the architecture changed to be senior citizen-friendly was an uphill task. The architect just couldn?t understand why I wanted land gradients to be gentle, why appliances and cabinets needed to be at eye level, why the fittings and fixtures had to easy to use,? he remembers.

He stayed on as a resident at the township, monitoring its daily working and putting in work at the 24-hour dementia centre there. ?I had varied experiences while dealing with sufferers of dementia. Many times, we didn?t know how to deal with them. That set me thinking. Nobody discussed this issue, and there was nothing written about it.? He started writing articles about his experiences, posting them on the Internet. ?I think I would have found this cause at some point in my life,? he muses. ?I come from a family of 100 people, and we all stayed at a waada at Palghar. But when I was very young, my mother told me, ?Don?t join in the family business. Do something different with your life. Everybody works for themselves, you should work for others.??

He finally started Silver Innings and found the inner peace he had been looking for. ?I give talks at several places, hold a lot of workshops, travel all over the country. But I never talk about the NGO. That was not why I started it. The focus has to be on the issue, and it is my job to plant the idea in as many people?s minds as I can.?

Engaging the young to help the old

Sailesh is a passionate user of social networking to further his cause, the rationale of which has been questioned by many. ?People ask, ?How many senior citizens use social networking? How will you reach them on the Internet?? But I am actually targeting the youth and the middle-aged persons in industry. If I can convert them, they will go home and talk to their parents, or devise ways to reach out to the elderly,? he says.

A major problem facing India?s elderly is that their numbers are only set to rise in the coming years. ?How are we, as a country, going to accommodate these huge numbers of people? It is time, and it has to be done right away, that the government actively think up ways to utilise this mass of people?s life experience, their working knowledge and their skills. What is the sense in forcing a person to retire at 60 years of age, if he or she is able to work? Also, there is an urgent need for industry to provide services to this huge untapped population. You can have small businesses that deliver cooked meals to elders living alone, or get elders in an area registered with a trusted firm that supplies domestic helps, repair mechanics and others. There is also a need to modify our architecture and infrastructure to become more elder-friendly. Most importantly, we need more old age homes (there are just six in Mumbai) and all of them should be inside the city, not banished to the outskirts.?

Sailesh Mishra can be contacted on silverinnings@gmail.com / sailesh@silverinnings.com. His NGO ' Silver Inning Foundation ' also runs an ageing centre, organises memory camps and runs an elder helpline, among other things.

French building industry takes up quarters at Big 5 | UBIFRANCE ...

There are currently a slew of large-scale projects happening in the Emirates. Qatar is in the midst of a boom on account of the World Cup that the country will be hosting in 2022.

This makes for a host of exciting perspectives for French building industry companies looking to develop business in the Gulf countries.

As the tenth-ranking exporter worldwide, France makes two-thirds of its foreign sales in the European Union, while the Middle East only accounts for 2% of the sector's export turnover.

Yet the French building industry has substantial experience in many fields. Having set long-term environmental and energy-savings objectives for the country, the Grenelle Roundtable on the Environment has given a shot in the arm to innovation, which together with quality and design, make up the strong points in France's offer.

There will be major groups and specialised firms, representing the various trades in the building industry: architecture and interior design services, fa?ade and roofing products, plumbing fixtures, tooling, protective and safety equipment, composite materials, miscellaneous hardware and fittings... the list is a long one!

The solutions on offer tend to favour environmental protection and energy savings, without in any way overlooking quality or longevity, as well as paying careful attention to adapting to local constraints.

The companies' are also demonstrating a long-term approach. Over fifty of them will be taking part in the Region's three main events, namely the Big Five Show and Middle East Concrete in Dubai (November 5th to 8th), and Saudi Build in Riyadh (November 11th to 14th). Expect many first-time participants this year in the Ubifrance pavilion, as over time, the older ones strike partnerships and get permanently established on the market.

Example of two innovative companies:

For many years, Atlantic has been building a significant presence in the Gulf Region, and has been adapting its commercial and production policy accordingly. The French leading multi energy solution provider in Europe is creating the buzz at Big 5 Dubai unveiling its new range of water heaters responding to the specific needs of the Region.

Big 5 is hosting the commercial launch of Atlantic new line of water heaters with three totally redesigned products, Ego, O'Pro+ and St?atite.

The slogan of the new water heaters campaign refers to the brand's expertise on the enamel that coats the water heater tanks, providing them with exceptional resistance.

Atlantic also showcases for the first time a digital water heater, Ingenio, featuring digital display of temperature and electronic thermostat in addition to a diamond-quality enamel and O'Pro technology.

With those four new water heaters, the new Atlantic line offers a comprehensive range combining attractive design and performance in order to respond to the needs of the market's various segments.

Athletics, suspended Colon agree on 1-year deal

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Suspended pitcher Bartolo Colon is getting a second chance with the Oakland Athletics, agreeing to terms on a one-year contract.

The AL West champions made the announcement Saturday. The 39-year-old Colon was suspended for 50 games on Aug. 22 after testing positive for testosterone. The ban will run five games into the 2013 season.

The former Cy Young winner went 10-9 with a 3.43 ERA in 24 starts for Oakland last season, his 15th in the majors.

Oakland could have a spot at the back end of its rotation after lefty Dallas Braden chose free agency rather than accept a minor league assignment. The status of Brandon McCarthy is unclear after he was hit in the head by a line drive last month and needed brain surgery.
