javascript reuters: Las Vegas Limousine Service | travel and leisure ...

If you are thinking on leasing a limousine service while you are in Las Vegas, you are going to have to spend a lot of money, that's for sure. Before you choose a Las Vegas Limo company, you have to consider many aspects to ensure you get your money's worth.

Limousine companies are constantly competing with each other to provide excellent chauffeur services to its consumers. You will find it hard to choose the limousine company you want to get for your Vegas escapades because they also offer exceptional amenities that are really very attractive to anyone.

As mentioned above, it might help you decide on which Las Vegas Limo service you will have to get by looking and comparing the amenities each one of them offers. In all industry where competitions are really high, one must make a distinction from the either. In the case of limousine companies, they pretty much offer and provide the same things like built-in bar, premium entertainment system, privacy divider, leather seats and many more. The only difference is how they will present these amenities to make it more marketable so they can get many customers. The cost that you have to pay for a limousine service varies and largely depends on the amenities included. If you want a cheap limousine service, expect it to be as simple as driving and taking you where you want to go, just the typical. No nothing. If you want to experience luxury and royal treatment, you are going to have pay a huge amount of money.

A limousine can accommodate from a minimum of 4 passengers up the 20, the most, depending on the size. It also has a greater ceiling height for a more comfortable limousine experience.

Limousine provides many amenities. Every limousine has a fully stocked wet bar. Usually, there is a sideboard that contains complimentary bottles of champagne, bottled water, alcohol, ice and glassware. Another spotlight for limousine amenities is the entertainment system which includes flat screen TV, radio player, DVD and CD player equipped with surround sound systems. Some may even have communication system installed like intercom and telephones. Limousine interiors are also custom built with fiber optic blinking neon lights. A divider is also integrated in the limousine for your time alone or privacy needs. In Las Vegas, the rate for a limousine service starts at $45 up to $125 per hour. For trip packages including round trip transfers, the rate starts at $56 up to $475. Generally, fuel surcharge is about $5 with a two hour minimum.

Tornado in Western Kentucky

CARROLLTON, Ky. -- Customers at a McDonald's in Carrollton, Kentucky got quite a scare last week when a gun was accidentally fired inside the restaurant.

Police say an Ohio woman reached into her purse and a .22 caliber revolver fell out of the purse and onto the floor.

The gun discharged and a bullet struck the side of a leather chair.

It was lunchtime and the McDonald's was full of customers, including children. ? Luckily, nobody was hurt.

The woman had a concealed weapon permit, and the local prosecutor decided there was no criminal behavior. ? Police returned the gun to the woman...unloaded, of course.

tripleline Vanilla Pear Panna Cotta (Vegan, dairy free, processed sugar free): Detox recipe 6 of 21

Elegant.

That?s what I had in mind as I created this real food dessert for my detoxers. Something simple and all grown up, like pearl earrings.

Here?s what really happened.

I made a huge mess pouring the warm mixture into glasses. I finally got it, stuck one glass in the fridge and drank the other one warm because I was dying to try it (tasty, but less-than-sophisticated approach.) Oh well.

The next day I took the glass out and my toddler, thinking it was a glass of milk, wrestled me for it. He finally got it and held the glass up to his lips. Tipped his head back. Waited for that moment where he?d drink milk like a big boy (ie no sippy cup).

He was very confused why the milk was stuck in the glass. But when I grabbed a spoon and showed him how to spoon it out, he caught on right away. And devoured it.

So there you have it. About as elegant as it gets in my house. For the rest of you ? try this with sparkling mint water or ginger tea, or post detox maybe a glass of Riesling.

Vanilla Pear Panna Cotta
1 can coconut milk
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 Tbl. pure maple syrup
2 tsp. agar agar flakes (find in the asian aisle at natural food stores, near the nori)
1/2 pear, grated

In a small pot, combine coconut milk, vanilla and maple syrup. Bring to a boil, then add agar agar flakes and simmer for 5 minutes, whisking continuously to dissolve the flakes.

Remove from heat. Grate pear into the coconut mixture. Allow to cool a bit, then pour into serving glasses and refrigerate at least 2 hours to set.

Serves 2.

PST: Whom could US use at left back Tuesday?

Heath Pearce and Zach Loyd have both started matches at left back for the United States in 2012, so they are the most likely, 11th-hour call-ups who could provide additional cover at left back should U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann go that direction.

(MORE: Fabian Johnson out for Tuesday?s contest)

Pearce (pictured), a longtime outside back who plays centrally for the Red Bulls, manned the left side as the United States opened its first full year under Klinsmann with a 1-0 win over Venezuela at the Home Depot Center earlier this year.

He graded out an ?just OK? by most accounts, but his 72nd-minute replacement was afforded better marks for adding some peppiness to the attack along the American left side. FC Dallas? Zach Loyd apparently impressed Klinsmann enough, too.

Loyd started the subsequent contest a few nights later down in Panama, but an injury late in the first half of the 1-0 win removed the FC Dallas man from that one.

Either man is presumably available.

More likely is that Klinsmann just picks from the players who flew into Kansas City from Antigua on Saturday. (They have one practice today, a public workout that went on Sunday morning.)

Given that the United States needs only a draw, Klinsmann might be inclined to go slightly more defensive anyway. That means Carlos Bocanegra, the captain and central defensive veteran who doesn?t offer much push up the left side, but does bring that veteran wisdom, calm and reassuring experience.

(MORE: What must happen on Tuesday; the World Cup qualifying scenarios)

Of course, if Klinsmann wants to add pressure into higher areas ? and that is, after all, among the primary tenets of the style he is attempting to implement ? he needs more speed and attacking ability. That could mean a make-shift left back gambit, something like what we saw in June when Jose Torres surprisingly manned the position in a home contest against Antigua.

Sacha Kljestan, maybe? Danny Williams, anyone?

Given Klinsmann and his propensity for the unexpected, would anything really surprise any of us?

(UPDATE, 6:45 p.m. ET Sunday: Michael Parkhurst apparently worked out at left back Sunday, so he could be an option, too.)

Call of the Wild? The Weird and Wonderful Experience of Wildlife ...

A dehydrated woodland moth that was brought to us simply needed a little water and some respite in the cool of the house overnight. It took flight mid-morning the next day.

I have been a licensed wildlife rehabilitator for the State of Oklahoma for a little over a year now.??While I have always loved animals and sought to help the orphaned and injured, I never dreamed?I would one day be active in helping wildlife in such a manner.? At the time I applied for my license, I thought, naively, that I was simply making what I had done all along, legal.? I had to, after all; Daisy deer had shown up motherless? and I couldn?t very well hide raising a deer when I lived on the outskirts of town.? It is one thing to raise birds and a few squirrels, but quite another to keep a deer without gaining some attention.

This is a juvenile robin with an injured wing, that we acquired this summer. We eventually transported this fledgling to Wildcare of Oklahoma. Often when an injury is far beyond my knowledge and care, I transport to Wildcare. Providing the bird/animal the best chance at recovery is always first on my mind.

Filling out the application to attain a license to rehabilitate animals was fairly simple.? But right off the bat, I saw that we were going to need to spiff things up around here!??Accompanying the application was a facility inspection form that the local game warden must fill out and sign before our operation could become official. Once we had everything ready, I would have to call the warden and make an appointment for him to meet with us?to do his inspection.

To gain the warden?s signature, we needed to demonstrate that we were capable of housing the animals we hoped to help, and show that we were prepared to?take whatever species might be brought to us.? So, I took inventory of what we already had on hand to house small mammals and birds, and FD and I worked to clean up an enclosed pen?area we could use for an aviary.? We also took advantage of the offer from family to come from Dallas to help us whip the old barn into shape so we could use it for housing larger mammals.? We purchased materials and built two large pens to provide space for the larger mammals, such as Daisy deer, to roam.? We took inventory of feed and water buckets, pee pads, blankets, heating pads, syringes and formulas.? And then we cleaned and repaired some old cages. There was so much to do!

My sister in Nebraska called me about an injured bird in their town park. After she emailed me this great, detailed photo of the bird, I was able to identify it as a juvenile Green Heron. My sister was able to contact the Nebraska State Game and Parks division, who dispatched someone to pick up this feisty fighter. The heron was none too impressed by the department employees efforts to help it, and managed a good stabbing injury on the transporter! One must always be careful when transporting any wildlife, cute as they may seem!

After all our work, still nothing prepared me for the day the warden?arrived!? I had tried to contact him for a couple of weeks, and became discouraged?each time?a tentative plan to meet fell through.? Making my last call to the warden, I again mentioned my itinerary for the week and asked if we could try to work out a time once again.? This time, he showed up bright and early the very next morning ? without warning!??From the front windows in our living room, I watched this intimidating figure step out of his official-looking truck.? He was talking on?his cell phone.? He had his game warden uniform on, and was wearing sunglasses with those darned?reflective lenses.? My heart was pounding.? I just hoped and prayed this would all go quickly.? And, of all things, I was in my worn-out work jeans, complete with holes in the knees, and topped off with?a ratty, camouflage t-shirt.? I wore no makeup and my hair was askew in a?haphazard ponytail ? I hoped I didn?t look, or smell, too much like a?hillbilly!

It took me more than a day to discover just what these ugly orphaned birds were! They became beautiful Eurasian Collared Doves and in a month?s time were released to the wild. They hung about our elm and pecan trees most of the summer before taking flight to the south one day. I always wonder if the collared doves we see around our property are either one or both of them!

As I walked out the front door to greet my visitor, I noticed the warden was still on his phone, and he was not smiling.? He sounded official and stern, and his conversation seemed terse.? I tried to calm my hammering heart, hoping I didn?t get a darned nose-bleed!? That had happened a few times in my life when anxiety got the best of me.? While I waited for him to end the phone call, I got busy opening up the door to the building that housed the cages and supplies.? Having something to do always calmed my nerves. ?Finally, Tyler introduced himself as his eyes scanned our property.

I had no way of knowing what Tyler was looking at, or what he looked like behind those reflective sunglasses.? He appeared to be in his early 30?s maybe,?but every spoken word?exuded confidence and maturity beyond that age.? He apologized for not making it by any of the earlier times we had designated.? As he?explained more about what was on his agenda as of late, I realized the importance of his job.? I felt humbled.? Some wanna-be-rehabber lady getting her panties in a wad over a missed appointment or two was the last thing on his list of concerns.?The previous two weeks had seen him working on deer poaching cases with another county game warden.? They had been putting in some long hours to catch the crooks.? Hearing about this, my maternal instincts fired up hot.??Little, orphaned fawn, Daisy, nestled safely behind the living room couch, was a hunted and sought after species.? I hated poachers with a passion.? Being a deer mother made me ferocious about protecting her.

Flying lessons began in the house. Our shoulders were the favorite landing sites, and FD was sure to get a good beard preening and mustache pecking from time to time!

The inspection went smoothly once Tyler and I began visiting.? He made it rather easy on me.? He asked a lot of questions about ?what if? scenarios.? At first I was alarmed his inquisition was part of the inspection.? I worried I would flunk or say the wrong thing; after all, I didn?t have a lot of experience.? Finally, I realized his questions were more about discovering what mammals I was interested in, what experience I had caring for various kinds of wildlife, and what my plans were to release my charges back into the wild.? On a final note, he assured me that his concerns mainly revolved around the ability to do what I could, within reason, to offer wildlife a chance.?He stated there were no expectations; no right or wrong decisions.? Simply put, just having someone to rely on, to be available to help, was the only criteria he looked at.?I realized too, that he was a caring person, often having taken in a critter or two himself, to eventually have a chance back in the wild.

Lucky Duck (right) was someone?s Easter duckling dumped off at a city lake. FD?s daughter spotted the lady who discarded the little ducking, and rescued Lucky. We acquired Happy Duck (left) as a companion to Lucky. Eventually, fox activity on our property caused us to transport Happy and Lucky to a city park where they were protected and cared for. Did you know ducks and geese should be fed cracked corn or duck feed instead of bread? Bread is a horrible ?filler? that expands their stomachs and provides little nutritional value.

FD and I have made many discoveries along the way about animal rehabilitation.? There is no right or wrong way to handle a situation.? One does what they can.? Sometimes the effort leads to a successful release, and sometimes death is eminent. No training is required, but self-education is encouraged, as well as developing a?network with other rehabbers, in order to gain knowledge and support.??I have?learned that there is no request that is weird or stupid.

This summer I?rehabbed a large woodland moth that was brought to me.? At first it appeared nearly dead.? Providing an overnight stay in a cooler atmosphere with available water, had my friend flying free, into the woods by mid morning.

Birds of all sorts are our most common patients.? Some need a day or two, or maybe a week off from flying to give time for an injured wing to heal.? Fledglings often need a bit of nourishment to keep up flight.? One particular robin brought to me, was discovered by a couple of boys who found it tangled? in some briars.??Sewing thread was wrapped tightly around its leg and a stick pin was also lodged in it?s leg.? After?snipping away the?loose thread, and leaving the embedded thread where?flesh had surrounded it, the thrashing bird was?set free.? It was a simple fix that allowed the?boys to see and understand how trash and debris that humans discard can get an animal in trouble, or even kill it.

This is one of my favorite photos of Frosty and FD. Frosty was always curious and often supervised the mixing of his formula! Frosty was a successful ?soft? release. He spent a month going back and forth from the porch (safe and semi-protected) to the woodlands. Eventually, he ventured far into the woods? and returned a few times over the past years for surprise visits!

These sweet sister squirrels were thrown from their nest in a violent storm. I had no idea how long they had been exposed to the extreme heat that day. Though they looked perfectly healthy in this photo, one had internal injuries and the other was lethargic and didn?t squirm about as they normally would. Both refused hydration and died just hours later. I felt myself a failure and questioned my capabilities as a rehabber. I did some research and found similar stories from other rehabbers? sometimes we never know about injuries sustained in a fall. Time is often of the essence with survival.

Most of my rehabilitation work revolves around taking phone calls.?I am listed in?a few directories online and also with the State of Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation.? Many times, word of mouth is my reference. ?I am the person who gets the call, ?What do I do with this bird?? It?s injured and in my yard?.? I am always a bit amused at what people might know or say about a bird.? Some people can recite exactly what type of bird they have, what appears to be wrong with it, and can tell me what they have done?thus far to help it.? Others, give only scant details and just want the intruder out of their yard.? One lady told me, ?I think it?s a mean bird.? It has a beak and, instead of using it to eat, it keeps attacking me when I?m trying to help it!? I really think it probably fell from the sky and hit its head.? It just seems very angry!?

Harold was a special case Mourning Dove with a neck injury. We worried he would never live a normal life, but eventually he healed and his neck righted itself. He turned out to be a SHE and frequented our backyard for many years!

I have found that even though I might not be able to help them with the bird or animal myself, since I don?t make house calls or transport from other areas, often the mere act of listening and offering more information will handle the call.? Sometimes I can locate a larger rehabilitation facility that cares for specific species or injuries.? Sometimes, I might help them find a facility nearer their home location.? Other situations require calling the county game warden in their area, since removing the animal might be dangerous to the caller.? Most of the time though, simply offering some words of encouragement and helping find a solution is enough.

This summer the effects of the drought caused most of the calls I received.? Numerous people discovered birds?that appeared exhausted, camped out in their backyards.? When no injuries were noted, I often asked if there was shade in the yard and, if not, instructed them to put something out to provide a bit of shade.? I also suggested??setting a pan of water in the shade.? Most all concerned people called back to say that, after a bit of respite from the heat and some hydration, the bird flew off.? It is a wonderful thing to hear the joy and elation from someone who took a little time to perform a simple act of kindness, and saved a little (or big) bird.

Daisy deer wandered the canyon area just beyond the slope below our house for two days before we gave up on her mother. It was the beginning of a wonderful journey!

Holly (background) was hit by a vehicle November 2011. Head trauma and a hip injury took about a month to heal, and eventually Daisy (foreground) and Holly were able to share a pen. We had hoped they would stay together once released after hunting season. After a week, Holly took off on her own. We feel she may have returned to her original herd which would be about 25 miles from here as the crow flies. Daisy has always remained near her birth area, and shares both life in the wild with a herd of her own kind, and her ?people? herd!

I often marvel at how this same scenario comes up in our own, every-day, human lives.? We all know?or meet someone?who just needs a bit of attention.? Maybe they need encouragement, or a little help with something.? It takes so little for us to smile, to offer a greeting, or assist someone who is struggling.? Some of these experiences may seem weird and strange, and they may even require a little more effort?than we initially thought about giving.??But the wonder and amazement of how giving just that bit of recognition and offer of respite or help, provides the most rewarding feeling in the world.? A simple act of kindness, I believe, is perhaps the greatest form of love there is!

Daisy has grown into a beautiful yearling. This month marks the start of her first rutting season. Perhaps a year from now she will be a mother with her own little fawn to care for and teach the ways of the wild.

? Day by Day the Farm Girl Way?

Was Joe Biden too mean for ?Iowa nice? voters?

NEWTON, Iowa ? Right under the picture of Marilyn Monroe, the muted television set at the Newton Family Restaurant was tuned to the Fox News recap of the vice-presidential debate as the on-screen headline blared, ?The Gloves Are Off.? But chatting with the 7 a.m. Friday breakfast crowd, many of them night-shift workers and retirees, it was hard to find anyone who actually watched the bare-knuckle brawl between Joe Biden and Paul Ryan.

That?s not entirely true, because Joyce Gilbreaith, a retiree sharing sausage patties and hash-brown potatoes with her husband Bill, admitted to me: ?I watched about 10 minutes of it and then turned it off. I got sleepy. I don?t like any debates like that ? they?re so unfriendly.?

Heidi Rodgers caught the beginning of it before she had to leave for her job as an overnight customer service manager at Walmart. ?Biden was laughing at Ryan,? she said. ?Something about malarkey. It didn?t seem like Biden was taking it seriously.?

Morning-after conversations in this working-class town (population: 15,000) about 35 miles east of Des Moines illustrate the difficulty of instantly scoring debates. What often gets through to voters are the snippets and sound bites rather than the full Debate Night in America viewing experience. Voters like Rodgers, a committed Barack Obama Democrat, are also adept at separating their judgments as TV critics from their political allegiance.

At Uncle Nancy?s Coffee House, on the town square right across the street from the 1911 Jasper County Courthouse, I entered just in time to hear a derisive crack about Biden from a woman in her late 60s: ?I thought it was disrespectful. Joe with all that malarkey business.?

The woman, who would not reveal her name, is part of a floating Newton coffee klatch in which one of the cardinal rules is ?never talk politics.? But Biden was so exasperating to this loyal Republican that she violated protocol not knowing that a reporter was sitting nearby.

For a century, Newton was synonymous with Maytag, until 2006 when the washing-machine company was acquired by Whirlpool. The 1,900-worker plant was soon closed, with many of the jobs shipped to Mexico. But this is an area where blue-collar anger does not automatically translate into Democratic votes. Jasper County closely mirrored the statewide vote in both 2008 (Obama romped home with 54 percent and 53 percent in the county) and 2010 (Republican Terry Branstad won the governorship in a landslide over the Democratic incumbent, Chet Culver).

Carl Repp, a Maytag retiree in his early 60s, expressed exaggerated remorse to his friends at Uncle Nancy?s for choosing the tightly fought VP debate over the tightly fought Thursday night NFL game (won by the Titans over the Steelers 26-23).

?I thought it was a good debate,? Repp said. ?I?m a Democrat. I thought Joe did a great job, but I wish that he didn?t interrupt so much.?

Long personal observation, dating back to the 1980 Republican caucuses, suggests that Iowans are nicer than voters in most states. While this is not a statistically verifiable conclusion, it would partly explain the morning-after obsession with Biden?s debate demeanor. Another theory, of course, is that Biden?s debate dominance may have been self-defeating.

Most mornings around 8 a.m., Repp shares coffee with Randy Wagner, another Maytag retiree, and Curt Brass, a police officer. Wagner is a disgruntled Democrat who jokes that he?s leaning towards Alfred E. Neuman, the Mad magazine icon, for president. But, in truth, Wagner admitted that he almost certainly will be voting for Obama.

?I don?t like Mitt Romney and what he stands for,? Wagner said. But while the Democrats can get Wagner?s vote, they can?t inspire him to watch the debates.

The 39-year-old Brass, who served two tours of duty with the Marines in Iraq, is part of that rare species of undecided voters who are eagerly sought by political campaigns and wayward reporters. And, yes, Brass watched every minute of the VP debate.

?I thought Ryan held his own ? and I wanted to see how he would do up against the more experienced Biden,? Brass said. ?I thought that Biden was a bit theatrical with his scowling and his smirking and his laughter.?

Despite the glib stereotypes about the politics of police officers and Marines, Brass voted for Obama in 2008. But he said, ?I?ve been disappointed with him because I don?t see how the economy is changing.?

On the other hand, Brass sees the Republicans as equally culpable because of their obstinate opposition in Congress. Brass also cynically noted that Romney had signed gun-control legislation as Massachusetts governor but became a passionate supporter of the National Rifle Association once he began running for president.

The vice-presidential debate, for all its entertainment value, did little to clarify the presidential race for Brass, although he did say, ?I like Biden because even when he puts his foot in his mouth, he means it.?

Trying to divine his leanings, I asked Brass the age-old if-the-election-were-held-today question.

?If the election were held today,? he replied, ?I?d write in Curt Brass.?

Perfect Health and Fitness Provides the Key to a Life Without - SBWire

Bear River, Nova Scotia -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/12/2012 -- According to the National Institute of Health, in 2004, 104.7 outpatient visits were made involving a digestive disease. Of these visits, 13.5 million resulted in a hospitalization and 236,164 deaths were attributed to a digestive disorder. All age groups were seen during these visits. although the highest rate was for those age 65 or older. The total cost for these visits was $141.8 billion, with $97.8 billion of that being for direct medical costs. With rising health care costs, this should be of concern to every American, states Elke Neher, founder of Perfect Health and Fitness.

Digestive diseases encompass a number of medical conditions, including, but not limited to, abdominal wall hernias, gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease and viral hepatitis. "When someone has been diagnosed with a digestive disease of any type, he or she may immediately turn to the Internet for information. Sherry Brescia, creator of "Great Taste No Pain", did the same thing when she suffered from severe pains in the past. Sadly, this is often the worst thing to do," Ms. Neher says.

"As an expert health researcher, Sherry Brescia works with patients suffering from digestive diseases on a regular basis. When she began her research, she quickly realized that much of the information provided online was actually incorrect. This caused her great concern as many are inclined to believe what they read on the Internet is fact," Ms. Neher continues.

As a result of this discovery, Ms. Brescia chose to write "Great Taste No Pain". Although there was a great deal of skepticism about her site when it first started," Ms. Neher explains, "Over time, people began to realize that the information provided in the books is trustworthy and accurate. As a result, customers are pleased with the results obtained and come back satisfied. No matter what digestive disorder one is suffering from, the information provided by Ms. Brescia is of great help. Be sure to visit her site to learn more about her work." Ms. Brescia offers a 60 day money back guarantee. If customers are not satisfied, the books may be returned for a full refund.

"At Perfect Health and Fitness, we offer advice on a wide range of digestive issues. PayPal plans first job cuts since 2008 financial crisis

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - PayPal is planning to cut as much as 3 percent of its workforce as the payments division of eBay Inc looks to streamline its operations under new President David Marcus, a person familiar with the situation said on Friday.

The reductions are expected to total between 300 and 400 and be focused in product development, technology and marketing, the person said on condition of anonymity because the plans are not public. PayPal has almost 13,000 employees.

The job cuts will be PayPal's first major reductions since the financial crisis in 2008.

Marcus became president of PayPal earlier this year after eBay acquired Zong, the mobile payments start-up he ran.

Since taking over, Marcus has been trying to shift PayPal's focus more to the consumer. He has also been working to speed up the product development process, which has become bogged down in lengthy procedures in recent years.

"We have told PayPal employees about plans under way to strengthen and simplify how we create and deliver consistently great products and brand experiences to our customers," a PayPal spokesman said in a statement emailed to Reuters.

He declined to comment on how such plans may affect jobs at the company.

In the last few years, PayPal has spent a lot of money to develop new products and buy up companies, hurting margins, Gil Luria, a managing director with Wedbush Securities told Reuters.

"Now that products such as the mobile wallet are ready to be introduced, looks like they are ready to tighten up and let margins go up from here," Luria said.

PayPal's plans for job cuts were reported earlier on Friday by Bloomberg News.

Two US researchers have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for uncovering and mapping a key mechanism used by cells to detect and respond to the presence of hormones and other chemicals they encounter, a mechanism seen as vital to the pharmaceutical industry?s development of new drugs.

The prize, which carries an 8 million krona ($1.2 million US) purse, was given to Robert Lefkowitz of Duke University in Durham, N.C., and the Maryland-based Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and to Brian Kobilka of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

The two were awarded for work on a family of proteins embedded in cell walls that detect the presence of a hormone such as adrenaline outside a cell, then conduct that information through the cell wall to a protein switch inside that touches off a cell's response.

The cellular sensors, dubbed G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), help coordinate "an orchestrated response from billions of individual cells that make up our bodies" as the cells respond to an outside stimulus, said Sven Lindin, chairman of the committee awarding the chemistry prize. One such stimulus: the startling, raucous appearance of a ghoul at a Halloween haunted house.

The receptors have become prime targets for new drugs to treat a range of diseases, he added at a press conference on Wednesday announcing the award. By some estimates, roughly half of all the drugs used today rely on GCPRs as pathways for affecting the cells of interest. Armed with a knowledge of the receptor molecule's unique pattern of folds when it's triggered, he adds, pharmaceutical companies are working to develop new drugs that have fewer side effects.

The notion that cells must have some mechanism for sensing their environment emerged toward the end of the 1800s, researchers say, but no one succeeded in identifying the sensors cells use.

Indeed, "when I started doing my work 40 years ago, there was still huge skepticism as to whether things like receptors really existed ? even from some people who were central in pharmacology," said Dr. Lefkowitz in an interview for Nobel.org.

He found receptors by adding tiny quantities of radioactive iodine to a hormone. Once the hormone bound itself to receptors, Lefkowitz and his team could pinpoint them.

In the meantime, other researchers were trying to identify the molecular switch that triggers a cell?s response once it sensed a change in the environment outside the cell. Indeed, two other American biochemists shared a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1994 for uncovering that internal switch, known as a G protein.

Dr. Kobilka joined Lefkowitz's team and found a way to isolate the gene that carried the genetic code for the specific receptor they worked with. In effect, the gene pointed to a receptor structure that resembles a noodle folded back on itself seven times and gathered into a bundle. That bundle extends all the way through the cell wall. When a bit of hormone binds to the receptor on the outside of the cell, the full length of the bundle changes shape, allowing the inside ends to bind to a G protein. Once activated, the G protein breaks up, setting off other chemical reactions that form the cell's response to the hormone's presence.

Kobilka later moved to Stanford University's School of Medicine, where last year he used X-ray crystallography to capture an image of the receptor and a G protein as the receptor passed its information along. The image revealed the structure of the altered receptor, which researchers say is useful for developing new pharmaceuticals.

Lefkowitz and Kobilka will receive their award Dec. 10 at a ceremony in Stockholm.
