A Mobile Recruiting Checklist - ERE.net

To help you better understand mobile optimization, I have prepared a simple checklist, taken from my 2012 mobile recruiting guide.

Are you building great relationships from your career website when candidates visit on mobile? If you haven?t considered the following, you could be damaging your employee brand.

  • Do users have to pinch and zoom on their devices in order to view all your content?
  • Does the top of page navigation fill the screen so users can?t see the content without scrolling?
  • Are links very small, making them difficult to tap with a finger or thumb?
  • Does your site have large images that take up valuable space on the device screen?
  • Does your site use hover (or drop down) menus? These won?t work on most mobile devices
  • Do your sites have lots of popup boxes? These can massively damage the mobile navigation experience
  • Does your site have a large graphic as a header at the top of the site? It will push important content off a small screen
  • Is your site copy heavy? The text may be too small to read on a mobile device, and most users prefer graphics, images, and videos.

Are you emailing your job seekers or engaging in social media? Considering the following will provide you immediate increased return from your efforts.

  • Are your emails easy to ready on a mobile? Make sure the candidate is not scrolling horizontally and that call to actions are big enough to tap.
  • Do hyperlinks in emails or posted in social media redirect to mobile content? Given the volume of candidates who will follow these links on mobile, you could risk brand damage and very high bounce rates away from your campaign efforts.

Could your site load faster on mobile? This section is quite technical so don?t worry if it is difficult to follow. You should however make sure any mobile partner or supplier you choose to work with has a good understanding of these issues.

  • Is content pulled in from many domains? Mobiles do not cache in the same way as desktops so the increased server requests caused will result in slower performance.
  • Are images used when CSS3 could be used? CSS3 is typically going to be faster and with very small download data size, resulting in a better candidate experience.
  • Are there lots of HTTP requests; could sprites be used? Lots of small images result in lots of individual requests to the server for graphics; sprite techniques allow the images to be retrieved in one request.
  • Does the site expect the client to cache large files like images or JS? Some desktop sites load large images or scripts on the first page and expect that data to be present for future pages. On mobile it is less likely the data will be available on future pages resulting in repeated downloads and slow performance.
  • Does the JS rely on large third-party libraries?
  • Are Java plugins, Flash, or Silverlight technologies used? Many plugins such as Flash are not available across all mobile operating systems.
  • Are videos encoded at high quality so they need high bandwidth? Various alternate video encoding methods exist that are designed for mobile performance.
  • File size is not just about bandwidth speed but also impacts the rendering (drawing) time of the browser due to the mobile having less computing power.

Delivering a consistent and high performance experience across smartphone operating systems is difficult. You must ensure that your solutions partner is testing across a wide variety of devices. Make sure you see the site on a 24-month-old Android and older iPhone, not just the latest shiny hardware.

Startup aids DIY film sales | Stuff.co.nz

Prime Minister John Key's faith in the Hollywood elite may be misplaced if a new Kiwi startup company's fix for the film-distribution model gets traction.

Hamilton-based web developer David White's website IndieReign.com is designed to allow independent film-makers to promote and distribute their films themselves.

The one-year-old startup has had about $500,000 in funding from Kiwi investor Phil McCaw (one of the original investors in Trade Me) and his investment company Movac.

IndieReign will list independent films for online streaming ?rental? or download purchase, and allows film-makers to set their own minimum prices and customers to pay as much as they like.

The website already has about 70 films available and is constantly uploading more from a recently-secured 1000- film back catalogue from international film distribution companies Vanguard Cinema and Cinify.

The website hopes to benefit from low-cost film-making technology as well as the increased viewing of online content on tablets, laptops and home flatscreens, rather than at movie theatres.

White said he was supportive of Key's recent trip to Hollywood to visit executives from the major film studios, but there were huge changes coming in the film industry.

The likes of Peter Jackson and Weta Workshop had broken ground for New Zealand companies and made it much easier for companies like his to get noticed, White said.

But he believed Silicon Valley's open, sharing attitude would eventually win out over Hollywood's ?locked-down? industry structure.

?The big dream [for film-makers] is to be up in a theatre, but it's just not going to happen,? said White, quoting the statistic that only 1 per cent of films made around the world will get theatrical distribution deals.

?Technology enables anyone to make a film with a $3000 camera and a computer, and now crowd-funding enables them to get the budget to make a fairly decent film, and hopefully IndieReign fulfils that last piece of the puzzle, which is selling the film,? he said.

For example, IndieReign uses Facebook to enable its film-makers to link their social media promotional activity to an all-in-one e-commerce site for their finished movie product.

An IndieReign film trailer posted to Facebook has a transactional link embedded in it which means anyone who watches can immediately and easily purchase the full version.

McCaw, who is chairman of the startup, said he would be providing another half a million dollars in the next funding round and was looking for another investor to match it.

Hi,

First time posting on this site.

My H and I have been together for 8 yrs, married for 2. We have a 1 yr old son.

My H has always been tidy and very particular about the way he likes things. I am easy going but I can be lazy.

We have recently moved to a very large house and I was excited about entertaining friends and family, having people to stay. However my husband is very particular about the way he likes things. We regularly argue about the housework, he tells not washed the dishes correctly or left the ironing pile too long. The truth is I am struggling as I don't want to be cleaning the house all day and would rather spend time with my son or relax.

My H also only ever wants his family to come over. Over the years I?ve spent more time with his family than my own because it is easier that way. If I invite my family or friends over then we argue about something - he doesn't want me to go to effort preparing food for them or he picks out parts of their personality that he doesn't like and tells me that "they best not do this when they come over". He also likes to pick and choose which of my family members or friends come over and he gets very upset if plans change and someone else comes unexpectedly.

It?s not just with people coming to the house either. If I want to visit someone I have to run it by him first, and he usually thinks of reasons for me not to go. I want to visit a friend who lives two hours away. He?s told me that she is stupid, he doesn?t like her and that there is no point seeing her anymore now that she lives so far away.

I think that all this narrows down to his issues with control. He hates being out of control of a situation. In turn he makes me feel useless because he'll never let me take control of anything.

Is there any advice you guys can give me on how to help him? I want him to relax when people are over and I want him to feel he can give me responsibility for things. Is there anything I can do?

Sometimes I think about leaving, it's affected my relationship with my family and I now have few friends because it is difficult to see them when I want.

I want to get help but he refuses to go to a counsellor. I can see this situation only getting worse. Please help!

It is controlling when he starts to tell her who she can visit and who can and cannot come over. No one should ask PERMISSION to go to a friend or family member's home for a visit unless that person is dangerous - i.e. drug abusers, violent alcoholic or encourages/invites someone who poses an EA/PA threat to come, too.

I totally agree with this....his behaviors do show signs of control. Those that have encouraged to seek MC for this are absolutely correct. This is something you are not going to be able to handle on your own.

As far as family.... I think it depends on how well past interactions between your SP and your family have gone. H and I don't have much to do with certain members of his family. At this point, they are not welcome in our home. This is due to the TOTAL lack of respect they've shown us both repeatedly over a period of several years. In order to bring peace in our lives, we mutually CUT them off. If this is the case in your situation, then your family needs to respect his wishes, but if not, then He needs to back off, suck it up, and allow you to have the same opportunities with your family he expects to have with his.

How Did Woman Live to 132?

Possibly the last person on the planet who knew the taste of the air in 1880 has died.

Antisa Khvichava, who claimed to be 132 years old, was enjoying her 47th year of retirement in Sachino, a remote village in the former Soviet republic of Georgia, when she passed away, according to a British newspaper, the Independent. If she was as old as she said, Khvichava would've been the oldest person to ever live.

Though a birth certificate and passport indicate Khvichava was born July 8, 1880, they are replacements of documents she had lost over the years, raising skepticism over her claim.

But science can't rule out her feat absolutely. If there's a maximum possible human age, it hasn't been found yet.

In 1798, the then-oldest verified person died at 103, according to the Gerontology Research Group. In 1997, France's Jeanne Calment, the current verified oldest, died at 122. [Infographic: Global Life Expectancy]

If Kvichava did, indeed, walk the Earth for well over a century, what did she do right?

Based on current science, the answer might be that, other than avoiding obvious physical threats, she didn't do much to earn her longevity.

Researchers at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University showed last year that, among a studied population of people older than 95, bad health habits such as smoking, drinking, poor diet and lack of exercise were about as common as in the general population, meaning their longevity seemed to be largely based on genes.

But this does not mean the general population should abandon healthy living and adopt a doctrine of genetic fatalism. Rather, that study and others suggest longevity outliers like Kvichava, a reported daily brandy drinker, have rare genetic protections that transcend unhealthy habits, propelling them into very old age in spite of lifestyle.

For people who aren't prepared to take a gamble that they're genetically predisposed to break 100 (the 2010 Census counted 53,364 centenarians in the United States), the famously abstemious and healthy-living Seventh-Day Adventists seem to hint at a practical regimen for increasing lifespan.

Studies by Dr. Gary Fraser, of Loma Linda University's school of medicine, and colleagues have linked the Seventh-Day Adventists' unusually long lives to exercise, a high incidence of vegetarianism, abstinence from smoking, and frequent consumption of nuts.

Superstitious seekers of longevity also have the option of moving to a place called Georgia. When Kvichava died, she passed the torch for the oldest living person to 116-year-old Besse Cooper in the United States' Georgia.

Cooper's birthday is verified to be Aug. 26, 1896.

S.Africa's MTN hit by slide in Iran rial

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - The impact of Iran's currency slide has reached beyond its borders, hitting shares of MTN Group, the South African mobile operator that derives nearly a tenth of its revenue from the Middle Eastern country.

MTN, which has been unable to repatriate profits from its Irancell unit because of Western sanctions on Iran, flagged in August that further rial weakness would deflate its second-half earnings.

Its shares were down 3.7 percent at 152.06 rand in afternoon trade in Johannesburg, bringing its losses this month to nearly 5 percent.

The rial has lost about a third of its value against the U.S. dollar in the last two weeks as U.S.-led sanctions cut the country's ability to earn hard currency from oil exports.

MTN operates in 21 countries across Africa and the Middle East, including a 49 percent stake in Irancell.

"It's just that there will be foreign exchange losses that will be included in the earnings number for the year, that's the main concern," said one Johannesburg-based portfolio manager, who declined to be identified.

The rial has collapsed two-thirds in little more than one year in the open market but the government's official rate has remained the same since January.

"The unofficial rate trades well below the official rate. The fear is always that if the official rate drops to the black market rate, then MTN will take a knock in their report," said one analyst, who also did not want to be named.

MTN said in August it was in talks with South African and U.S. officials about moving money out of the country. The company's chief executive said at the time it had been unable to take cash out of the business for at least six months.

MTN is being sued by rival Turkcell for $4.2 billion in a U.S. court, saying it used bribery and lobbied South Africa to support Tehran's military in return for a 2005 cellular licence in Iran that was originally awarded to the Turkish firm.

MTN has denied the charges.

Eurogroup chief: Lenders, Greece should agree soon

LUXEMBOURG (AP) ? Greece and its international lenders need to agree quickly on a program of reforms so the next tranche of bailout loans can be released, the head of the group finance ministers from the 17 countries that use the euro said Monday.

Inspectors for the so-called troika ? the International Monetary Fund, the European Central Bank, and the European Commission ? are currently in Greece, looking for ways to reduce the country's debt. Greece needs more money soon to avoid defaulting on its obligations.

Greece has depended on bailouts from Europe and the IMF since May 2010. To get the loans, it has implemented a series of deep budget cuts and tax hikes, while increasing retirement ages and facilitating private sector layoffs.

However, Athens must pass further austerity measures worth ?13.5 billion ($17.5 billion) over the next two years to qualify for its next rescue loan payment ? without which the government will run out of cash next month. It is these cuts and tax enforcement measures that Greece and the troika are currently negotiating.

Jean-Claude Juncker, the eurogroup chief, speaking to reporters in Luxembourg after a meeting of the finance ministers of the euro countries, praised Greek officials and their willingness to do what is necessary for the country and its economy. And he said a report from representatives of the troika was largely positive.

"We were happy to learn that substantial progress has been made over the last weeks ? and, mainly, days," Juncker said. "We called on the troika to finalize their negotiations and agree on a complete set of measures to close the fiscal gap for '13 and '14 as soon as possible."

Juncker and IMF chief Christine Lagarde emphasized that it was still necessary for Greece to fully implement all the measures it had agreed to in March ? by Oct. 18, at the latest, Juncker said ? for the next slice of aid to be released.

Earlier Monday Olli Rehn, the EU's financial and monetary affairs commissioner, said he was "less pessimistic" about the future of the euro than he was earlier this year ? but warned that the region was still a long way to go before the financial and economic crisis is solved.

Meanwhile the International Monetary Fund lowered its outlook for world economic growth ahead of its annual meeting in Tokyo. The IMF forecasts that the world economy will expand by 3.3 percent this year, down from an estimate of 3.5 percent growth issued in July. Among the 17 nations that use the euro, low growth in the major "core economies," such as Germany and France, will be offset by outright contractions in the smaller economies, leading real gross domestic product to fall by about 0.4 percent in 2012, the IMF said.

The IMF thinks growth in the euro area will stay flat in the first half of 2013 and tick up to about 1 percent in the second half of the year, the IMF said.

The eurogroup of finance ministers is meeting during a period of relative calm for the eurozone. This year, leaders of the European Union and its institutions have taken steps to alleviate the concerns surrounding the region's debt crisis. The European Central bank said Sept.6 that it would be willing to buy unlimited amounts of debt in countries like Spain and Italy, which are struggling with high borrowing costs.

Also the EU has acquired significant new powers designed to help it resolve the current crisis and prevent new ones. These include the power to closely monitor national budgets and demand changes in them. Also in the works is a central banking supervisor.

Rehn said the organization's ability to react to the eurozone's financial crisis has improved significantly compared with two years ago when the crisis began.

He welcomed the official launch Monday of Europe's new ?500 billion ($647.9 billion) permanent bailout fund, the European Stability Mechanism, generally referred to as the ESM.

"We have enough challenges in Europe," Rehn said as he entered a meeting of finance ministers from the eurozone. He added that while nobody was in "a party mood," he was "less pessimistic for the moment of the future prospects of the eurozone than, for instance, in the spring."

The ESM is designed to reassure investors that the EU is better equipped to contain whatever crises erupt in the eurozone.

"Today is a good day for Europe," said Juncker, who is also chairman of the ESM's board of governors, as well as prime minister of Luxembourg.

The ESM will eventually replace a temporary bailout fund, known as the EFSF, but the two will overlap for the time being while the EFSF continues to handle the bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

The new fund will eventually have ?500 billion at its disposal that it will use to buy the bonds of countries whose borrowing costs are becoming unmanageable and to lend money to them if that is not enough. It will also lend money to countries that need to prop up failing banks, including handling Spain's bank bailout. It is expected that the fund will eventually be able to lend money directly to banks, without the government having to carry those loans on its books.

Currently, such rescues have to go through governments ? and that puts an added strain on countries such as Spain that are already having difficulty reducing their debts.

The EU countries have agreed that the banks can receive direct recapitalization only once the European Central Bank is put in place as their supervisor, with broad powers to oversee ? and sanction ? them. But there has been disagreement over how fast that should happen.

France and others are pushing for the ECB to start supervising banks by the end of the year. But German officials say it can't be done that quickly and momentum has slowed on the project.

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici turned up the temperature in the debate on Monday night, saying that the supervisor had to be in place quickly and that once it's up and running, banks should be able to retroactively receive direct recapitalization.

"That's the letter and that's the spirit" of the leaders' agreement, he said. "I see no reason to go back on it."

Also during Monday's meeting, the finance ministers approved the release ?800 million ($1.03 billion) in bailout money for Portugal. The remainder of the next ?4.3 billion tranche of aid must be formally approved by the IMF and the full 27 EU finance ministers.

The decision had been widely expected ? even though Portugal has said it would miss the targets laid out in exchange for the ?78 billion bailout. Already, the foreign lenders have agreed to allow the country to reduce its deficit to 5 percent of its gross domestic product this year, rather than 4.5 percent.

Why I'm Less Reluctant to Entertain this Week - Reluctant Entertainer

Reluctant.

The definition is fascinating: Lack of enthusiasm; unwillingness or lack of enthusiasm.

Or offering resistance or opposing.

Reluctant is having reservations about doing something you were asked to do.

Tie that definition together with entertaining, and I think that describes a lot of people. Reluctant Entertainers.

Not willing to take the extra step, go the extra mile, put our fears aside, stop worrying about silly things ? and open WIDE our front doors to hospitality.

Dealing with the ?P? word straight on. Perfectionism. Realizing that it will haunt and stifle God-given gifts of love and friendship.

Am I a reluctant entertainer? At times, yes.

I think even the most seasoned hostess deals with feelings of ?reservation? from time to time.

Did I invite the right group of people? Can I pull it off? Even when serving the food, I?m wondering if my guests will like it? Is the music okay? The list goes on and on.

I?m sure many of you can relate. It never stops ? wondering and worrying.

Some people are so reluctant, they STOP at the thought of entertaining.

This week, once again, I?m pushing past my fears and am hosting another dinner party in my home. (Don?t these colors remind you of the the 70s? They were my mother?s entertaining colors!)

Why am I a little bit less reluctant this time, with such a large group, than I was at this party? (I wrote about dinner party barriers, here.)

Because I just hosted the same size group 2 months ago, and am also giving myself many pep talks. It?s good to focus on the right things, when entertaining.

Those ?right things? I hope will help you today, if you struggle with being a reluctant entertainer, especially with the holidays ahead and possible entertaining moments that could bring your family and acquaintances joy, if you?re willing to put your reluctance aside.

Are you a reluctant entertainer?

1. Entertaining is like a muscle. The more you ?do it,? the easier it becomes.

2. It gives your courage to know you?ve already pulled off one dinner party (it doesn?t matter the size, it could be 4 people or 14 people), so that you can do it again.

3. The more familiar you are with something, like a hosting routine, the easier it becomes.

4. Think about what made your last event successful and do those things again! Take the steps to organize and plan and prepare so you will enjoy yourself.

5. Remind yourself of the good memories, the looks on your guests? faces, or the comments that they made, comments of pure enjoyment, because YOU put love and effort into bringing them all together.

6. Embrace your imperfections. Set the bar hight, but give yourself permission to mess up, fix what you need to, and move on, without beating yourself up over things that don?t happen perfectly.

7. ?Fun is expensive, but happiness is free.? Live by this concept, that joy comes from within, and your focus will change from the ?dinner party details? to the people coming to your home. Be joyful and learn to embrace the moment and not focus on the things that are not perfect (things that the guests won?t even know).

8. Put your expectations aside. You have a wrong understanding of ?hospitality? if you have to set a standard where you?re trying to impress because you think your guests expect it. Guests rarely have the same expectations that you do.

I?m excited to show you more about what?s ahead this week. (By the way, I planted these beautiful Flowering Cabbage (Pigeon White) this week. They last through the winter months and right now they were only $1.49 each at our local Grange! Can?t beat that for filling the pots for Fall/Winter!)

Entertaining in Oregon during the Autumn season ?. swoon! The best!

Reluctance aside, it?s happening, and it?s good.

And I?m going to enjoy every moment of being with my wonderful guests.

Do you struggle with being a reluctant entertainer? What aspects would you like more help with?
