The Importance Of Iridium Satellite tv Connectivity

Sustaining communications whilst out at sea is a tough but very important science. The inability process along with send information from prolonged distances can make a ship essentially useless. Though not the most frequent form of connection, but probably the most reliable, may be the use of iridium satellite technology.

Essentially the most distinguishing benefit of using iridium technology is their allowance for global online connectivity. There is no put in place the world it is possible to go exactly where connectivity will probably be lost. This specific global element includes pathways, airways, and also polar parts.

Another key benefit can be its accessibility. Someone might have worldwide connectivity all inside a single unit such as a cell phone. That sort of engineering is difficult to discover and an important feature associated with connectivity bundle. Another thing to search for when searching for any provider with this sort of technologies is the accessibility to update and modify your own deal. Each customer provides different needs and that client should have the liberty to buy the package that will applies to his/her wants down to your letter.

Probably the most sought after popular features of iridium satellite communications are high-quality standard voice service, SMS, e-mail and small-file data transfer, weather opposition, large variety of accessories, innovative voice solutions such as voicemail messages, call barring, forwarding, and also call restrictions, and info services around 128 kbps. It can be pretty amazing these services, among many others, proper care available in the particular maritime area. Much of this technological innovation is possible through a service called narrowband. This service bears data, typically voice info, over a slim stretch of frequencies, unlike broadband. This specific narrowband technology enables more accurate parts and a higher power associated with communication.

One of the best features most companies that offer these types of services have is before delivering a message; a course displays the price of the message tranny and requests the user in the event the message is available to send. This is great in terms of cost manage, as iridium satellite technology can get fairly harmful for the deliver workers. It also has accessibility for a dispatch manager to watch and management all the info passing over the communications technique to perform analysis for the ships costs.

As this technology advances cost is constantly dropping while at the same moment reliability as well as usefulness is actually increasing. The usage of iridium technology may be the way of the near future for ocean going purposes and definately will only expanding in the future.

Quasars: Mileposts marking the universe's expansion

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? Scientists can't travel deep space the way Columbus sailed and charted the New World or Lewis and Clark mapped the west. But, researchers at Case Western Reserve University and two partnering institutions have found a possible way to map the spread and structure of the universe, guided by the light of quasars.

The technique, combined with the expected discovery of millions more far-away quasars over the next decade, could yield an unprecedented look back to a time shortly after the Big Bang, when the universe was a fraction the size it is today.

Researchers found the key while analyzing the visible light from a small group of quasars.

Patterns of light variation over time were consistent from one quasar to another when corrected for the quasar's redshift. This redshift occurs because an expanding universe carries the quasars away from us, thus making the light from them appear redder (hence the term), and also making the time variations appear to occur more slowly.

Turning this around, by measuring the rate at which a quasar's light appears to vary and comparing this rate to the standard rate at which quasars sampled actually vary, the researchers were able to infer the redshift of the quasar.

Knowing the quasar redshift enables the scientists to calculate the relative size of the universe when the light was emitted, compared to today.

"It appears we may have a useful tool for mapping out the expansion history of the universe," said Glenn Starkman, a physics professor at Case Western Reserve and an author of the study, published this summer in Physical Review Letters.

"If we could measure the redshifts of millions of quasars, we could use them to map the structures in the universe out to a large redshift."

The larger the redshift, the farther and older the light source.

The group plans to seek larger samples of quasars, to confirm the patterns are consistent and can be used to calculate their redshifts everywhere across the universe.

The work was led by De-Chang Dai, who earned his PhD working with Starkman and was most recently a member of the Astrophysics, Cosmology and Gravity Centre, University of Cape Town. The other authors include Amanda Weltman, PhD, a senior cosmology lecturer at the Centre, and brothers Branislav Stojkovic, a doctoral student in computer science and engineering, and Dejan Stojkovic, a physics professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dejan Stojkovic also earned his PhD with Starkman and was later a visiting assistant professor at Case Western Reserve.

The scientists graphed the amount of light from 14 quasars recorded by the Massive Compact Halo Objects project, which sought evidence of dark matter in and around the Milky Way. Light from each quasar was measured repeatedly over hundreds of days.

Graphing revealed phases during which the amount of light would either increase or decrease in a linear fashion over an extended period of time.

Although other properties varied, the rate at which the measurable light changed was nearly identical among all 14 quasars, once scientists corrected for the effects of the universe's expansion.

"It's as if there was a dimmer switch on them with someone turning it to the left then the right," Starkman said. "The overall trend was surprisingly consistent."

This consistency of patterns enabled the scientists to accurately calculate the cosmological redshift of one quasar from another.

The researchers tested this capability in two ways.

They fit segments of the light curves, that is, the measured light over time, to straight lines. The slopes of the lines were consistent and appeared to be directly related to the quasars' redshifts.

By comparing corresponding slopes of 13 quasars with a known redshift value to the slopes of one other quasar, the researchers could calculate the redshift of the lone quasar within two percentage points.

In a second approach, the researchers took large sections of the light curves of two quasars and concentrated on the segments that matched most closely. By varying the ratio of the redshifts of the two quasars to try to get the best possible match of the two light curves, they were able to determine the ratio of the quasars' redshifts to within 1.5 percentage points.

Astronomers have used the bright light of supernovae with redshifts up to about 1.7 to measure the accelerating expansion of the universe. A star with a redshift of 1.7 would have been emitting that light when the universe was 2.7 times smaller than today.

Quasars are older and farther away and have been measured with redshifts of up to 7.1, which means they emitted the light we are seeing when the universe was as small as one-eighth the size it is today.

If this method of determining quasar redshifts proves applicable to higher redshift quasars, scientists could have millions of markers to trace the growth and evolution of structure and the expansion of the universe out to large distances and early times.

"This could help us learn about how gravity has assembled structure in the universe." Starkman said. "And, the rate of structure growth can help us determine whether dark energy or modified laws of gravity drive the accelerated expansion of the universe."

Russia accuses USAID of trying to sway elections

(AP) ? Russia on Wednesday explained its decision to put an end to the U.S. Agency for International Development's two decades of work in Russia by saying the U.S. government agency was using its money to influence elections.

The U.S. State Department announced Tuesday that Russia has demanded USAID leave the country, a culmination of years of resentment over what Moscow sees as American interference aimed at undermining President Vladimir Putin's hold on power.

"We are talking about attempts through the issuing of grants to affect the course of political processes, including elections on various levels, and institutions of civil society," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

Nearly 60 percent of the aid agency's $50 million annual budget this year has been allocated for the promotion of democracy and civil society in Russia. Some of this money has gone to support Russia's only independent election monitoring group, Golos, which fielded thousands of observers in last winter's parliamentary and presidential elections, and compiled reports of widespread vote fraud in support of Putin's party.

Putin had accused Western governments of trying to influence the December parliamentary vote through their grant recipients, and a state-owned television channel directly denounced Golos, showing suitcases full of dollars that the group supposedly had received. After those elections set off an unprecedented wave of protests, Putin accused the demonstrators of being in the pay of Washington.

"All of this is part of a series of moves aimed at toughening policy toward protests, the Internet, NGOs and freedom of speech," said Grigory Melkonyants, the deputy director of Golos. "The people who make these decisions intend to crack down on dissent and criticism in a way that is as harsh as possible. It is frightening even to think about what may happen tomorrow."

Since Putin returned to the presidency in May, the Kremlin has taken a tougher stance against the opposition and Russia's nascent civil society. Non-governmental organizations that receive foreign funding and engage in vaguely defined political activity must now register as "foreign agents," which is intended to destroy their credibility among Russians.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Tuesday her government is proud of what USAID has done in Russia, including fighting AIDS and tuberculosis, helping orphans and victims of trafficking, and improving the protection of wildlife and the environment. She said the U.S. hopes that Russia will now take responsibility for such initiatives.

(AP) ? For the embattled Syrian regime, the crudely produced film mocking Islam that has unleashed fury across the Muslim world could not have come at a better time.

Images of furious protesters targeting Western diplomatic sites in Libya, Egypt, Pakistan and elsewhere have diverted the world's gaze from the bloodstained streets of Syria, where President Bashar Assad is trying to crush an 18-month-old uprising.

The crisis over the film also has reinvigorated militant rhetoric that U.S. and Israel are the real enemies of Muslims, taking the heat off of both Assad and his loyal and powerful ally in neighboring Lebanon, the militant group Hezbollah.

On Tuesday, Syria's Cabinet condemned the movie, titled "Innocence of Muslims." In its first official reaction, the Cabinet said the film about the Prophet Muhammad is "cheap and provocative," adding that it's "part of a Western project that aims to infringe upon the nation's heritage and symbols ... as a prelude to control its potentials and wealth."

It remains to be seen whether the controversy will result in any lasting gains for Syria or for Hezbollah, whose reputation has suffered severely for siding with the Assad regime even after supporting revolts in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya and Bahrain.

The demonstrations over the film, while fervent, were relatively small to begin with, and they appear to be tapering off in the Arab world. Still, Hezbollah is determined to keep them going, which serves the interests of the Shiite militant group as well as Assad.

Assad's fall would be a nightmare scenario for Hezbollah. Any new regime led by Syria's majority Sunni Muslims would likely be far less friendly ? or even outright hostile ? to Shiite Muslim Hezbollah. Iran remains the group's most important patron, but Syria is a crucial supply route. Without it, Hezbollah will struggle to get money and weapons as easily.

The Syrian conflict has descended into a civil war, with neither side able to strike a definitive blow against the other. The result is a murderous stalemate, with a growing sense of worldwide horror over violence that activists believe is responsible for killing 23,000 people.

The prophet film, however, has exposed a well of deep anger and frustration directed far beyond Syria's borders ? and Syria and its allies are seizing on it.

In his first public appearance since 2011, Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah told tens of thousands of rapturous supporters Monday that there must be sustained demonstrations against the film.

There are four more rallies planned this week in Lebanon, starting Wednesday, as Hezbollah tries to redirect popular rage against the U.S., describing the film ? which is amateurish and intentionally provocative ? as an unprecedented attack on Islam.

"The world should know that our anger is not a passing thing. ... This is the start of a serious campaign that must continue all over the Muslim world in defense of the prophet of God," said Nasrallah, who rarely appears in public for fear of assassination.

"As long as there's blood in us," he added, "we will not remain silent over insults against our prophet."

Nasrallah has said he considers the film the worst insult to Islam mainly because it is available online and anyone can access it.

"I think that this level of offense is very big, very grave and unprecedented," he said in a televised speech recently. He said the film is more of an insult than the 2005 publication by a Danish newspaper of cartoons depicting the prophet, which unleashed a wave of violent protests by Muslims; and British author Salman Rushdie's 1988 novel, "The Satanic Verses," inspired in part by the life of Muhammad.

Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a religious edict in 1989 calling for Rushdie's death, leading the writer to live in hiding for a decade.

Hezbollah is harnessing the outrage over the film, an apparent attempt to keep the issue alive and to bolster its standing a defender of Muslim dignity and a moral force in the Arab world. Many in the crowd Monday wore headbands of green and yellow ? the colors of Hezbollah; others hoisted Syrian flags to show their allegiance to Assad, a sign of the strong links between Syria and Hezbollah.

But the group also appeared to be trying to ensure the gatherings don't descend into violence, planning them only in areas where Hezbollah has control. None of the rallies targets the heavily fortified U.S. Embassy in the hills outside Beirut.

The movie portrays the Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a child molester. Protesters have directed their anger at the U.S. government, insisting it should do something to stop it, although the film was privately produced. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton criticized it as "an awful Internet video that we had nothing to do with."

For the moment, the masses who have risen up against Assad appear to be drowned out by those chanting against more familiar enemies ? the United States and Israel.

"Death to America!" the crowds shouted Monday in Beirut. "America is the great Satan!"

Hands-on with Kingston's DataTraveler Workspace at IDF (video)

Handson with Kingston's DataTraveler Workspace at IDF video

What's this? Just another USB 3.0 thumbdrive at IDF 2012? Not quite. You're looking at Kingston's DataTraveler Workspace, a storage device that incorporates bona fide SSD technology not usually found in thumbdrives -- like a bunch of ultra speedy flash memory and a SandForce controller that supports TRIM and S.M.A.R.T commands. As such, it shares more in common with Kingston's line of SSDs. It's not really designed for data storage -- instead, it's meant to be used as a certified Windows To Go fixed drive, "a fully manageable corporate Windows 8 workspace on a specially configured, bootable USB drive".

The idea is that corporate IT can deploy these thumbdrives to employees who can then run a secure, managed instance of Windows on a variety of PCs with a bootable USB 2.0 (or faster) port. Another interesting feature of Windows To Go is that Kingston's DT Workspace thumbdrives can be removed for up to 1 minute without crashing Windows -- the OS simply alerts the user to "keep the USB drive plugged in" and continues where it left off. Pricing remains a mystery, but the device will be available for business customers in 32, 64 and 128GB capacities when Windows 8 launches. Until then, you're invited to peek at the gallery below and to watch our hands-on video past the break.

Typhoon battering North, South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A powerful typhoon lashed North and South Korea with strong wind and heavy rain Monday, killing at least one person, leaving dozens of others homeless and cutting power to many homes and businesses in the South.

In North Korea, rain drenched parts of the country, including the eastern coastal city of Wonsan, but did not reach the capital, Pyongyang, which was windy Monday but was spared the heavy rains that lashed the South Korean capital.

Typhoon Sanba, which battered southern South Korea around midday Monday, was pushing northward and expected to move into eastern waters later in the day.

Sanba knocked out power to about 26,900 homes and shops in South Korea, the state-run National Emergency Management Agency said. The storm also forced cancelations of about 330 flights and 170 ferries, it said. Huge waves battered the southern coast.

A 50-year-old woman died in a landslide in southeastern South Korea, and another woman was injured in a separate landslide, agency officials said. More than 170 people were left homeless, they said.

Before reaching South Korea, the storm hit Japan. About 67,000 homes in southwestern Japan lost power and some areas flooded. A man drowned Sunday while swimming in high waves off the southern Japanese island of Ishigaki, according to the coast guard.

In North Korea, which reported heavy casualties from another powerful typhoon last month, any heavy rain is a worry. There weren't any immediate official reports about whether Monday's typhoon caused any injuries or damage.

State media said that storm, Typhoon Bolaven, killed 59 people and left 50 missing and 26,320 homeless. About 51,600 hectares (127,500 acres) of farmland were flooded, buried or washed away, the official Korean Central News Agency said Friday.

North Korea also suffered flooding and drought earlier this year. There are worries about how the country's farms will handle the severe weather. The United Nations said in June that two-thirds of the country's 24 million people were grappling with chronic food shortages.

Typhoon Bolaven left 15 dead and five missing in South Korea. Another typhoon hit the peninsula shortly after Bolaven, but it didn't cause any deaths in South Korea. North Korea also suffered little damage. It's not unusual for three typhoons to hit the Korean Peninsula in such a short time, according to the Korean Meteorological Administration.
