Boat Retail Sales See Improvement During July | RV Business

Recreational boat sales regained some momentum in July, settling into a healthy pace of growth and providing more clues about the location and durability of the industry?s recovery.

Soundings Trade Only reported that aluminum pontoon and fishing boats continued to be reliable gainers, but the best-performing category in the industry?s main powerboat segments was the high-volume 11- to 40-foot outboard fiberglass category.

Sales in that segment rose 20.5% in July to 2,783 boats from the same month a year earlier, according to figures compiled by Aarn Rosen, national sales manager at Statistical Surveys Inc.

?It shows the renewed strength of the Southern and Middle Atlantic markets,? Rosen said of the outboard category?s strong showing. ?They?ve had a good year. Combined with the strength of the ski [boat] market, it shows the Southern states are joining the Northern states in a revival of boating health.?

July?s report ?certainly mimics the nice trends of last month,? Rosen said. ?The same categories are growing.?

The data for July were based on information from 26 early reporting states that comprise about 57% of the U.S. boat market. July sales represent 13% to 14.8% of the total annual market.

Lovejoy High School Cheerleading Coach Resigns After Stripping Sleepover Claims

A Georgia high school cheerleading coach has resigned following allegations that she had team members strip during a sleepover at her house.

According to a Clayton County Sheriff's report via The Smoking Gun, the coach hosted a sleepover for the teens at her house and played a game called "Judge and Jury." The coach played the "Judge" while the students played the "Jury." From the report:

[Teresa Reeves of the Clayton County School Board of Education] said the object of the game was to ask a series of questions and in doing so the person would have to answer the question beginning with "honestly." Ms. Reeves said if the student did not answer the question correctly they would have to either run laps around the school track or remove an article of clothing. Ms. Reeves said the student could have their laps reduced if they choose to remove an article of clothing.

A student reported the incident to school officials, but a Clayton County Public Schools spokesperson declined comment to the Clayton News-Daily on an open investigation.

The coach claims that she closed her eyes during the game and didn't see if any of the girls removed all of their clothing, "only the students removed clothing to reveal their under garments," according to the Sheriff's report.

One girl told WSBTV that about a dozen girls were crammed into a closet and stripped to their underwear.

"I'm just totally pissed off. It's past upset. I'm pissed off," the girl's mother told the station. "What child ain't going to try to fit in? They telling her this is what we do every year? Y'all do this every year? Really?"

The Sheriff's Office is investigating based on the reporting student's "outcry" and the allegation that "the incident was videotaped," according to The Smoking Gun.

Heat-proof face paint to withstand bomb heat

Molly Docherty, contributor

If you thought your make-up's UV protection was good, how about face paint that can withstand the intense heat of a bomb blast? US researchers have created a camouflage face paint that may soon be used by soldiers and firemen to shield them from extreme heat.

As well as waves of pressure, exploding bombs emit blasts of heat that can exceed 600 ?C. Such a blast may only last a couple of seconds, but that's long enough to cook human skin. A soldier's conventional camouflage make-up only makes matters worse as it contains oil and wax.

The US Department of Defense funded researchers at the University of Southern Mississippi? to tackle the problem. The team upgraded camouflage face paint by replacing its carbon base with silicone. Silicone is non-flammable as it absorbs heat outside of the spectrum produced by intense flames.

The new formula not only guarded skin for the 2 seconds required to withstand a bomb's heat blast, but protected naked hands and feet for 15 seconds before mild, first-degree burns appeared. This gives soldiers vital time to move away from burning areas.

In the video above, the temperatures of two panels are being measured as they are exposed to a blowtorch. The panel on the left is coated with the new heat-resistant camouflage make-up. As both panels are exposed to flames, the temperature of the painted panel rises far more slowly than the bare one on the right. The material was presented at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia today.

The research team is putting together a colourless version for firemen. They're also working on a formula that could be used to fire-proof clothes and tents.

It's a club ? for pets! | Dogs Blog Rose and Kate's Dog Blog

Okay, so I had to go to the vet today.? I don?t much like it.? I like the vet tech.? She was nice.? She petted me and told me how pretty I was and then stuck the butt thingie in.? So no big deal. I do have a little owie ear but I got medicine for that.

Since I was such a good girl, my two-legged companion said I got to go to this new place called Pets Club. WOW!? No make that a BOW WOW!? I love that place. Treats on the right. Treats on the left.? Treats up high and down low.? Treats where I can munch on them. Kevin, he works there, said Pets Club is a candy store for dogs.? He must have a dog because he?s right.

Marissa has dark long hair like me.? She works there too.? I mean how can they call it work when there?s all this wonderful to stuff to eat all around. She said I was pretty.? I told her ?right back atcha, ? but I don?t think she understood.? She gave me lovies and I gave her lovies.

Anna explained that the food was wholeistic.? I think she meant it was wholelotta yummy.? There were so many kinds. Raw food ? does catching a bird in the backyard count as raw food ? or would that be a live food.? I dunno. Anyways. There were big bags, little bags, cans, jars, frozen food, a wholelotta food.? I love food. Not as much as my bestest friend Rose, the Irish setter, but I love food.

Do you remember when Rose met that big, huge, gigantic, tremendous, giant of a four legged companion?? I think it was called a ?horse?? They have horse food at Pets Club! No really they do.? I don?t understand why horses eat it.? I mean it kinda smells like grass.

You gotta go to Pet?s Club.? Really.

Kate, the cute one, who needs to take a nap now.

Is it time for dinner yet?

Speeding the search for better carbon capture

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

A computer model that can identify the best molecular candidates for removing carbon dioxide, molecular nitrogen and other greenhouse gases from power plant flues has been developed by researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), the University of California (UC) Berkeley and the University of Minnesota. The model is the first computational method to provide accurate simulations of the interactions between flue gases and a special variety of the gas-capturing molecular systems known as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). It should greatly accelerate the search for new low-cost and efficient ways to burn coal without exacerbating global climate change.

Berend Smit, an international authority on molecular simulations who holds joint appointments with Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division and UC Berkeley where he directs Berkeley's Energy Frontier Research Center, co-led the development of this computational model with Laura Gagliardi, a chemistry professor at the University of Minnesota.

"We've developed a novel computational methodology that yields accurate force fields - parameters describing the potential energy of a molecular system - to correctly predict the adsorption of carbon dioxide and molecular nitrogen by MOFs with open metal sites," Smit says. "All previous attempts at developing such a methodology failed and most people gave up trying, but our model is applicable to a broad range of systems and can be used to predict properties of open-site MOFs that have not yet been synthesized."

Smit and Gagliardi are the corresponding authors of a paper describing this research in the journal Nature Chemistry. The paper is titled "Ab initio carbon capture in open-site metal?organic frameworks." Co-authors are Allison Dzubak, Li-Chiang Lin, Jihan Kim, Joseph Swisher, Roberta Poloni and Sergey Maximoff.

Given that the United States holds the world's largest estimated recoverable reserves of coal, coal-burning power plants will continue to be a major source of our nation's electricity generation for the foreseeable future. However, given rising concerns over the contributions of burning coal to global climate change, there is an urgent need for an effective and economical means of removing greenhouse gases from flues before those gases enter the atmosphere. Current technologies proposed for capturing greenhouse gas emissions, based on amines or other molecular systems, would use about one-third of the energy generated by the power plants. This "parasitic energy" would substantially drive up the price of electricity.

MOFs are crystalline molecular systems that can serve as storage vessels with a sponge-like capacity for capturing and containing carbon dioxide and other gases. MOFs consist of a metal oxide center surrounded by organic "linker" molecules to form a highly porous three-dimensional crystal framework. When a solvent molecule is applied during the formation of the MOF and is subsequently removed, the result is an unsaturated "open" metal site MOF that has an especially strong affinity for carbon dioxide.

"MOFs have an extremely large internal surface area and, compared to other common adsorbents, promise very specific customization of their chemistry and could dramatically lower parasitic energy costs in coal-burning power plants," Smit says. "However, there are potentially millions of variations of MOFs and since from a practical standpoint we can only synthesize a very small fraction of these materials, the search for the right ones could take years. Our model saves this time by enabling us to synthesize only those that are most ideal."

Force field models developed to predict the adsorption properties of other MOFs typically underestimate the properties for open metal site MOFs by two orders of magnitude. This is because open metal site MOFs impose very different chemical environments from the MOFs that were considered in the original development of force field models. Smit and his colleagues met the challenge of open site MOFs using state-of-the-art quantum chemical calculations and a strategy based on the non-empirical model potential (NEMO) methodology.

"Under this NEMO methodology, the total electronic interaction energy obtained from quantum chemical calculations is decomposed into various contributing factors, such as electrostatic, repulsive, dispersion and so on," Smit says. "With the model we developed we were able to reproduce the experimental adsorption isotherms of carbon dioxide and molecular nitrogen and correctly predict the mixture isotherms at flue-gas conditions in Mg-MOF-74, an open metal site MOF that has emerged as one of the most promising for carbon dioxide capture."

The generality of their methodology should enable Smit and his colleagues to develop force field models for broad combinations of different metals, linkers and topologies. Work is already underway to apply the model to new amine-based systems for removing carbon dioxide from flue exhaust.

ASBDC Biz Blog: What happens disaster strikes? Can you recover?

Business insurance or commercial insurance is for YOUR protection. As all insurance is meant to reduce your risk under certain conditions, business insurance is meant to protect you from liability under a multitude of circumstances.

From an umbrella policy that covers just about any type of incident or accident that could?adversely affect your business to specific insurance plans that cover very specific areas, insurance coverage is imperative. A great example is flood insurance. Some areas may seem ?safe? from flooding and yet it still happens. That?s when an umbrella policy would be effective for covering the water damage caused. On the other hand, if you live in a known flood plain it is probably a good idea to supplement your umbrella policy with a specific flood policy.

Insurance does more than provide protection from life's unfortunate events. Insurance provides a peace of mind that if something does happen that you can and will recover. Many bankruptcy filings happen because a business did not have the proper insurance plan in place before a disaster strikes. When that happens the cost to recover can prevent the recovery from happening.

A key consideration for your insurance needs is to find an agent that is willing to go above and beyond when disaster strikes. I?ve heard the stories of the insurance agent beating the fire trucks to your house when it?s on fire. Or the agent that helps move furniture out of the guys basement as the water is pouring into the home. A good agent will represent you, protect you and go to bat for you when you need him to. Find a good one!?Insurance always seems like an unnecessary expense but it will save you time, money and headache in the long run.
