Look toward the center of the Milky Way galaxy

Today?s chart (top of post) is aimed toward the galaxy?s center, which is located some 30,000 light-years away. Many people find it by locating the prominent asterism known as the Teapot in the constellation Sagittarius. Notice the Teapot on our chart and in the photo below.

Remember, when you are looking at this starlit band across the sky ? visible from country locations ? you are peering edgewise into our own galaxy. More details below.

The next Blue Moon is August 31, 2012

See the Teapot of Sagittarius in this photo? The center of the galaxy is located in this direction. This photo comes from EarthSky Facebook friend Lewistown StormWatcher, who posted it on August 17. Thank you, LS! Click here to expand image.

The most important thing about seeing the Milky Way is to find a dark location. In the month of August, if you go someplace really dark, and simply look up in the evening, it will be there: a hazy band stretching all the way across the sky. The haze is really countless stars.

The chart at the top of this post shows that the starlit trail of the Milky Way seems to bulge just before it reaches the southern horizon. You can see this bulge in the night sky, and it marks the approximate location of the Milky Way?s center. This part of the Milky Way is vastly more spectacular in a dark night sky than it appears here on our chart! The constellations Sagittarius and Scorpius lie in this direction as well.

With the moon gone from the evening sky, this is an excellent time to trek out to the country for an edgewise view into our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

So take advantage of the thin waxing crescent moon setting soon after sunset for the next several days, and go stargazing. And if you have them, bring along a pair of binoculars. If you scan with binoculars along the Milky Way, you?ll find many lovely clusters of stars. No need to know their names to enjoy them!

Bottom line: How can you find the center of our Milky Way galaxy? First, go to a dark, country location ? far from city lights. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, look southward in the evening to locate the Teapot of the constellation Sagittarius. If you are in the Southern Hemisphere, look overhead. The center of the Milky Way lies in the direction of the Teapot in Sagittarius.

Can you show me a detailed view of the Milky Way center?

Convention host cities gear up for traffic

(AP) ? During this summer's national political conventions, workers in downtown Tampa and Charlotte will face throngs of pedestrians snaking through intersections, evening commutes snarled by street closures and the threat of unruly protesters.

For waiters who expect big tips from delegates, the transportation headaches should be worth it. Some accountants and bankers, though, are more likely to fire up their laptops and work from home. But the biggest problem for locals as they plan their workday routines is uncertainty, since neither city has hosted an event this big.

"Honestly, I don't know what to expect," shrugged Rosalie Arnone. She works at the Old Tampa Book Company, which is about a mile from the Tampa Bay Times Forum where the convention will be held. "We plan on being open, but if anything gets out of control, we're going to close up."

Sure, the Super Bowl has come to Tampa four times, and Charlotte has hosted an NCAA Final Four and a National Rifle Association annual meeting. But the cities have never accommodated such large numbers of people, combined with heavy security and the threat of protests.

So when residents of both areas talk about how they will handle the traffic, the demonstrations and the potential disruption in daily routines, many express ambivalence, hope or even confusion.

Betty Ryan, a 36-year-old Charlotte attorney, says some of her friends who work downtown are taking the week off.

"We're glad the Democrats are coming here. It's a good thing for Charlotte. We'll be in the national spotlight. But if you work here, good luck. It's going to be very difficult getting around. That's why so many people will be staying home that week."

The Republican National Convention will be held Aug. 27-30, while the Democratic National Convention will be held Sept. 4-6. Officials in both cities say stores, restaurants and bars will be open, but acknowledge that many office workers could decide to telecommute and some businesses may opt to shut down for a few days.

In Tampa, for example, 108 of 130 retail merchants in the city's downtown area plan to stay open, according to an informal survey by The Tampa Downtown Partnership. Many are hoping for an increase in business in late August, a time when it's typically slow.

"Will there be challenges? Sure," said Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn. "We're going to manage the routes and protect the routes and get through it."

Similarly, Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx acknowledges it will be harder for people who work downtown to get around, but he promised the city will be open for business. City officials say, for example, that it should be easy for trucks to make deliveries to the restaurants that will mostly be catering to convention-goers.

"Folks that want to stay open will be able to stay open," Foxx said.

Tampa is home to about 350,000 people, although most don't live in the urban core. The few who do are either trying to rent out their condos or just leave town.

The city's downtown is only about 571 acres and is bordered by interstates and rivers, and punctuated with restaurants, cafes and offices; the city normally buzzes during the workday but becomes quiet by evening. The convention will be held at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, about eight blocks south of the heart of downtown.

In Charlotte, a city of 760,000, the convention is being held in the central business district known as Uptown. The bustling two-mile stretch that cuts through the heart of this central district is filled with restaurants, hotels and high-rise condominiums. Ringed by expressways, it's used to handling crowds of NBA and NFL fans that spill into the streets before and after games.

During the convention, Charlotte is planning to close portions of 29 streets to traffic for security. The city will post signs and use "physical barriers" and uniformed law enforcement officers to enforce security.

In Tampa, more than two dozen roads and streets, including a main expressway, will be closed to traffic. Others will temporarily be one-way lanes. Taxi drop-offs, roads leading to one of the city's main hospitals, public buses ? all will be rerouted. Tampa General Hospital, the city's largest trauma center, is telling patients that driving to the facility could take 30-45 minutes longer than usual because of periodic road closures.

Commuters in both cities are already grumbling.

"It's going to be a zoo," said Bob Daniels, 45, an accountant who works in downtown Charlotte. "The last thing I want to do is have to go through checkpoints, and roadblocks. It's too much of a hassle. Too much stress. I don't want to be around it."

Instead, Daniels said he will work from his home in Rock Hill, S.C., about 20 miles away. His accounting company will be open, but most employees will telecommute.

"It's no big deal. A lot of people work from home. All you need is your laptop. I do it all the time," Daniels said.

Bank of America, which employs about 15,000 people at its headquarters in Charlotte, is encouraging employees to work from a mix of downtown offices, alternative bank facilities and their homes, BofA spokesman Scott Silvestri said.

Wells Fargo, which employs about 20,000 people in the Charlotte area, is also considering letting people work from home and other alternatives.

In Tampa, city and county office buildings will be closed and employees will work remotely or in other locations. Some companies located in Tampa's skyscrapers are allowing people to work from home.

Convention activities generally begin around 4 p.m. each day, so afternoon rush hour is bound to be challenging.

In Tampa, Humana health insurance, the city of Tampa and RNC officials decided to provide 20 pedal-buses ? they look like pedal driven, canopied golf carts on steroids ? to help conventioneers get around the city to visit restaurants and stores. Each pedal bus can accommodate eight riders plus one "driver" that steers the rig. After Tampa, those pedal-buses will be headed to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

Despite all the predictions of gridlock, Tampa's downtown merchants are still hoping to have some semblance of a normal work week. Ed Arias, the owners of Reina Shoe Repair in downtown Tampa, said he's received scant information from the city on what to expect. He expects to come to work as usual on the first day of the convention and hope for the best, adding that most of his regular customers will likely be out of town.

"But if it's too crazy, too risky, I'll shut the doors."

Unstupendous Next-gen Consoles and the Revenge of PC?

The Rumors
The hardware specs for the next generation of gaming consoles, namely Orbis (which is a codename for the next PlayStation) and Durango (for the next Xbox) are just rumors and speculations at the moment. Here?s what?s rumored: Orbis is going to have an AMD x86 CPU, plus an AMD ?Southern Islands? (i.e. Radeon HD 7000 series) GPU. Durango is rumored to have a 16-core IBM POWER family CPU with (again) an AMD Southern Islands GPU. I don?t know how much RAM either of these systems might have, and I?ll be happy to know of any rumors that might be flying around if anyone knows of any.

Hardware specifications for Nintendo?s Wii U, while not completely known, are at least official. They also list a ?multi-core? IBM POWER-based CPU and an AMD GPU.

Change from Current Generation
For the next generation, Microsoft has not changed manufacturers of its two main parts. Xbox 360 also uses an IBM CPU and an AMD (then ATI) GPU. But Sony has turned its back to its previous suppliers (including itself.) Instead of the CELL Broadband Engine jointly developed by IBM, Sony and Toshiba, with an Nvidia designed and manufactured GPU, Sony has given the heart and soul of its next flagship console to AMD to play with. For completeness?s sake, the current generation high-end consoles both have 512MiB of RAM, although they use different configurations and specs.

AMD GPUs FTW!
If the rumors turn out to be close to reality, AMD will turn out to be the most important and unrivaled-in-that-importance gaming hardware manufacturer for the coming generation. The obvious first benefit is the revenue they will be harvesting from all those Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony consoles sold. Besides that, they will be in a unique position to drive the next generation of graphics. Also, since all these platforms will have AMD GPUs, PC developers (most of whom have an eye towards console targets) might also become inclined to use their hardware for development, testing and optimization.

The Steam hardware survey shows AMD?s GPU adoption at 35%, versus Nvidia?s current lead at 47%. The above, added to my own personal opinion that AMD?s GPUs have better performance and features at the same price point as Nvidia?s, might finally let AMD displace Nvidia as the top gaming GPU seller for the desktop. I hope neither capture too big a lead though, as a monopoly will certainly mean trouble and being ignored for the users.

An Integrated Dream for PlayStation 4

If both CPU and GPU of Orbis are indeed made by AMD, there is a chance for that platform to offer new levels of integration and cooperation between these two most important components of that system. Of course, all console platforms (except maybe a few, by which I mean the original Xbox!) have been much more integrated and accessible than PCs (where you have 16 layers of APIs and operating systems and drivers and crap between you and hardware,) but still there is more opportunity for integration and low-level cooperation when a high-end console?s CPU and GPU are designed and manufactured by the same company.

Since AMD?s general direction in the past years have been integrating CPUs and GPUs (albeit in the low-end end,) I can only wonder what Orbis will actually be like and capable of.

Generational Gap with PCs

When the last generation high-end consoles were released (in 2005 and 2006) they both boasted around 10 times compute power compared to typical high-end PCs of their day. This time around though, even if these two new consoles were released today, they wouldn?t be more powerful than enthusiast PCs that anybody with a few thousand bucks can buy. Much cheaper at the same performance; sure, but nothing to be excited about. (Note that some of the 16 cores in Durango, for example, are going to be dedicated to run its version of Kinnect, which brings the number of available cores down to 12 or 10 or 8, which is not that remarkable today.)

And they are not going to be released this hour. The consensus in the industry seems to be that they are going to be launched at the end of 2013 at the earliest, which is still 15 months off. It seems obvious that by then, even mid-high-end PCs will be comparable to them in theoretical power. So, the generation gap between consoles and PCs will be a thing of the past; and that means PCs will have much more juice in them at least to the end of this decade.

Cost-mitigating Hardware

So, why this unstupendous hardware? Simple: to control costs. Both the costs of the hardware at launch (and the couple of years after that) and much more importantly, the cost of developing games for these platforms. There is a very insightful and very informative article called the Rise of Costs, the Fall of Gaming about this subject, which I recommend for anyone even the least bit interested in video games.

It seems clear that most of AAA games need to take advantage of the power of the platforms they run on, or they will be considered inferior-looking and last-gen by many if not most gamers and game media. This mostly means higher-quality and more detailed textures, models, animations, sounds, etc. and more content in all areas. And this almost always directly translates to higher production budgets for those AAA games. Of course, other grades of games have to follow suit too.

Therefore, by introducing an overpowered platform, console manufacturers automatically increase the costs of making games for those platforms, and this is not something the content-makers and their consumers (who ultimately will be stuck with the costs) want.

It makes a lot of sense to me for the next generation of the consoles to be more powerful than the current generation by only a manageable margin. This lets the developers keep most of their current tools and technologies and processes in place (all of which have cost a lot of money, experience and time to create) and also helps mitigate the rampant race in useless graphical quality. And anything that occurs to me, obviously has occurred years ago to the experts in the field.

Revenge of the PC

Right now, at the end of a console generation cycle, an average gaming PC has more power than the consoles. And the games with best visuals that are unencumbered by platform politics all have their best presentations by far on the PC (e.g. Battlefield 3, Crysis 2, Rage, etc.)

With the release of the new generation, for probably the first time in the past decades, this pattern will continue and PCs will still hold the cutting edge. However, the general gamer public will always view consoles as the standard for visuals and presentation quality. This puts the PC in a unique position of being more powerful and at the same time not having to have much better looks.

The new generation of consoles will also be more like PCs, hardware-wise. Certainly much more similar than say, the CELL was!

Since developing anything for PCs is already easier (more tools, more accessible platform and information, developers more familiar with PCs) and the hardware in PCs will be more like those available in consoles (which mitigates some costs and hardship in porting code and content) and the PCs will have more power in them, the cost of development and porting of games to the PC will probably be much lower compared to consoles (certainly with a wider gap than over the lifetime of the current console generation.)

This, in all probability, won?t be able to dethrone consoles as the primary gaming platform, but may speed up the revival of PC as a target for more AAA games and more respect and care from the game developers. I myself certainly hope so!

Who's who? Two new owl species found

Two new owl species have been identified in the Philippines, and researchers say the birds' songs led them to the discovery.

"More than 15 years ago, we realized that new subspecies of Ninox hawk-owls existed in the Philippines," zoologist Pam Rasmussen of Michigan State University said in a statement. "But it wasn't until last year that we obtained enough recordings that we could confirm that they were not just subspecies, but two new species of owls."

In fact, the researchers found that the Philippine hawk-owl (Ninox philippensis) consists of seven allopatric species, or those that emerge as a consequence of individuals being isolated geographically, or temporally. They also identified one subspecies.

Two of the species had never been described nor officially named, until now. One of the newly identified owl species, now called the Camiguin hawk-owl, lives only on the small island of Camiguin Sur and has a very different voice and set of physical features than other owls in the region, the researchers said.

It has blue-gray eyes and sings a long solo song at night that builds in intensity with a low growling tone. Pairs of Camiguin hawk-owls, meanwhile, sing short barking duets that kick off with a growl.

The researchers, who reported their findings in Forktail, the Journal of Asian Ornithology, also identified the Cebu hawk-owl after studying its structure and vocalizations.

Suicide car bomber kills 5 Pakistani troops

A Pakistani official says a suicide car bomber has killed five security troops at a road checkpoint in the country's volatile southwest.

Spokesman Murtaza Baig says the attacker detonated his explosives early on Saturday after he was stopped at the checkpoint in a Quetta suburb. The killed troops were members of Pakistan's paramilitary Frontier Corps.

Baluchistan province and its capital, Quetta, have been the scene of an insurgency by Baluch nationalists who are demanding greater rights and share from the income generated from gas and minerals extracted from the province. Various Baluch groups are blamed for attacks on the province's security forces and are suspected of targeting other ethnic groups in the region.

Islamist Taliban militants and the extremist group Lashker-e-Jhangvi are also active in the province.

The Lifelogging Trend? What Can We Expect?

Some time ago, I was thinking about releasing an ebook to see what I could learn from it. When I was doing my research, I learnt that ebook demand follow a different logic. If your ambition is to make a little money from an ebook, it?s wise to focus on immediate need. If you were to write a brick-thick novel like ?Brothers Karamazov?, you could only charge very little for it, but if you were to release a 20-page ebook titled ?How To Recover Your Deleted Files In 10 Minutes?, you could probably charge five times as much for it.

Basically, the long-tail of e-commerce is simply shorter when there?s an urgency?

No wonder easy-to-read self-help books has gotten so much attention in the internet age. Self-help books used to be that embarrassing aisle in bookstores reserved for people battling depression, but now it?s another story. Enter teh internet age and suddenly we all are learning how to become pick-up artist from Neil Strauss? The Game?or how to attract happiness and riches from Rhonda Byrne?s much-hyped The Secret. All in the name of self-help, of course.

I?m A Lifehacker, Yes I Am

I?m an addict myself. I read survival guides, how to fight with knives (you lead with your empty hand) and how to pick any lock. Right now I?m watching instructional videos on the so called ?Afterburner Effect? which explains how some exercises only burn calories while you are doing them, while some helps you burn calories also up to 48 hours after you finished your workout.

No wonder I love the works of Tim Ferriss, The 4-Hour Workweek and The 4-Hour Body. Most of us are drowned in online reactions while we try to live the lives media has thaught us to live and we really push beyond the limits of Dunbar?s Number in our daily lives. Tim Ferriss, who can be described as a somewhat eccentric but brilliant lifehacker, managed to fuse the ever-growing interest for GTD (getting things done) with both the gamification trend and the booming interest for self improvement, the latter group described as lifehackers.

Enter The Lifelogging Gadgets

Now, Tim Ferriss is no ordinary human. He is also an athlete, pushing himself to quite the ordeal when it comes to mental strength and physical trials. Most digital mavens loves using technology to optimise their lives, but they aren?t exactly aspiring to become triathletes themselves. So they fall in love with the gadgets.

GPS trackers, wifi body scales, sleep trackers, heart rate- and pulse monitors; the list is pretty short still, but it won?t be for long. Nike FuelBand and Jawbone Up are two ambitious products, but arguably they aren?t where they need to be in terms of product quality just yet. There are quite a few lifelogging smartphone apps, but they are more like novelties than anything else at this point.

But we can expect the lifelogging trend to boom (and spark debate on integrity issues) way beyond where it?s at today. It?s called the medici effect, the intersection between different fields of innovation suddenly sparks more innovation and also sparks exciting new adaptation curves. The technology exists, the demand is emerging and now we?re only waiting for the products to fully integrate with our online lives.

Why, you might ask? The answers will surely come. One thing is for sure, what gets measured gets done. And who knows what cross-referencing data-sets and analytics applications will be able to teach us about ourselves?

The Da Vinci Experiment

Personally, I?ve started a tumblelog called The Da Vinci Experiment some time ago (pretty much into lucid dreaming right now). It?s still very much under construction, but the idea is to find a way to fuse my online lifestream with my lifehacking efforts. My ambition is driven primarily by my thirst for knowledge and passion for technology, even though my interest for a healthier lifestyle seems to increase in correlation with my own age.

I?m also eagerly awaiting Martin K?llstr?m?s new venture,?Memoto. Not much is known about the project yet, but Martin most definitely has his finger on the pulse (no pun intended) of the online early adopters;?the digital hippies and the social media naturals, who?s looking for something to get lost in as social media goes mainstream. Until then, if you want to get deeper in with the lifelogging trend, keep an eye on The Da Vinci Experiment and also, please give me some suggestions on interesting gadgets in the comments below!
