CSN: Phillies 'going to unload' before deadline

? ? ?
With the clock ticking toward Tuesday?s 4 p.m. trade deadline, the Phillies remain active on a number of fronts.

?They?re going to unload,? a person with knowledge of the Phillies? deadline plan said Monday afternoon.

Well, at least they?re trying to unload.

Here?s what we know as of late Monday night:

? The Phils are working on a deal that would send pitcher Joe Blanton to Baltimore. A report on MASNsports.com said the Orioles were reviewing Blanton?s medical records, which is a prerequisite for most deals. A Phillies source confirmed that Baltimore was the team of focus on Blanton. The Orioles are looking for a pitcher and scouted Blanton?s last start in Atlanta.

The Phillies reportedly have shown interest in 19-year-old infield prospect Jonathan Schoop, rated as the Orioles? No. 3 prospect by Baseball America. It?s difficult to imagine the Orioles giving up such a promising player for a back-end-of-the-rotation starter and two-month rental like Blanton. It?s more likely that the Phils would get a mid-level prospect. Joe Jordan, the Phils? first-year farm director, spent the last seven years as Baltimore?s scouting director so he has deep knowledge of the Orioles? system.

So what?s the hold-up in the Blanton-to-Baltimore deal? The Orioles may be balking at picking up the remainder of Blanton?s salary, about $3 million. Having fallen badly out of the NL wild card race, the Phillies are eager to shed salary so they can get under the $178 million luxury-tax threshold.

? Shane Victorino remains a strong candidate to be dealt. A source mentioned the Dodgers as the most likely trade partner, though the Giants and Reds have interest. Victorino is owed just over $3 million for the remainder of the season.

? According to a person with knowledge of the situation, the Phils have tried to sell Hunter Pence to a number of teams, particularly the Giants. No team has yet met the Phils? price on Pence, who is under control for next season and could make more than $14 million in salary arbitration.

? Cliff Lee has been in play for weeks and remains so. There were reports Monday that the Phils and Texas Rangers had stepped up trade discussions, but the Rangers aren?t in a position to take on the $87.5 million that Lee is owed for 2013-15.

If the Phils have made one thing clear by dangling Pence and Lee, it?s that they are looking to free up some payroll so they can have the resources to fill several holes. If Pence and Lee survive Tuesday?s trade deadline, they could be moved during the off-season.

? The Phils are also looking to deal from their bench. Ty Wigginton could go and so could Juan Pierre. The Reds like Pierre.

Massachusetts Eye and Ear researchers discover ... - Health Centers

? Eye / Vision Problems ? ? Genetics ? Jul 30, 2012

Researchers from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia, Loyola University Chicago Health Sciences Division and their collaborators have isolated an elusive human gene that causes a common form of Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a relatively rare but devastating form of early-onset blindness. The new LCA gene is called NMNAT1. Finding the specific gene mutated in patients with LCA is the first step towards developing sight-saving gene therapy.

LCA is an inherited retinal degenerative disease characterized by reduced vision in infancy. Within the first few months of life, parents usually notice a lack of visual responsiveness and unusual roving eye movements known as nystagmus. LCA typically involves only vision problems, but can be accompanied by disease in other organ systems in a minority of patients. LCA is a common reason children are enrolled in schools for the blind.

?The immediate benefit of this discovery is that affected patients with mutations in this new LCA gene now know the cause of their condition,? said Eric Pierce, M.D., Ph.D., co-senior author and director of the Ocular Genomics Institute at Mass. Eye and Ear. ?Scientists now have another piece to the puzzle as to why some children are born with LCA and decreased vision. The long-term goal of our research is to develop therapies to limit or prevent vision loss from these disorders.?

NMNAT1 is the 18th identified LCA gene. The gene resides in a region that was known to harbor an LCA gene since 2003, but the specific disease gene has been undiscovered until now. These findings will be published on July 29 in the online edition of Nature Genetics.

To identify NMNAT1, scientists performed whole exome sequencing of the family of two siblings who initially presented for evaluation of LCA but who had no mutations in any of the known LCA genes. Being seen by a multi-disciplinary team that took the case from careful clinical characterization to genetic testing to the research laboratory was an essential ingredient for success.

?By using whole exome sequencing, we found a mutation in a gene that no one could have predicted would be associated with LCA,? said Dr. Pierce.

?Whereas most of the known LCA genes involve dysfunction of retinal ciliary proteins necessary for light detection in the eye, NMNAT1 is uniquely distinguished by being the first metabolic enzyme linked to LCA,? said Marni J. Falk, M.D., co-first author and Clinical Geneticist at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

Having found a mutation in NMNAT1 in this one family, the investigators next asked if mutations in NMNAT1 also cause disease in other patients with LCA. Screening of 284 unrelated patients with LCA from the United States, England, France and India allowed them to identify 13 other patients with mutations in NMNAT1 as the cause of their disease.

Drs. Falk, Pierce and colleagues also studied how the identified mutations in NMNAT1 affect the function of the NMNAT1 protein, and thus may cause dysfunction and death of the light sensitive photoreceptor cells in the retina. Working together with Eiko Nakamaru-Ogiso, Ph.D., in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at The University of Pennsylvania, they found that mutations in NMNAT1 appear to decrease the ability of the NMNAT1 protein to produce NAD+, a key mediator of cellular signaling and energetics.

Early treatment for patients with NMNAT1-related LCA could be especially beneficial.

Researchers found that all but the youngest patient with NMNAT1 mutations had damage to the macula, the center of the retina that is needed for central vision. ?This 4-year-old girl who doesn?t have central vision loss yet can possibly benefit substantially if we can devise a therapy for her NMNAT1-mediated LCA that prevents her from developing severe central vision loss,? Dr. Pierce said.

This study is an example of the multidisciplinary collaboration among the three institutions, using exome sequencing to discover genes involved in inherited diseases caused by mutations of a single gene. ?With the robust database and pipeline that we have developed, we have analyzed more than 300 whole exomes of patients and families with single-gene diseases,? said Dr. Xiaowu Gai, co-senior author and director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine. ?We are following up on a number of strong candidate genes. We are sequencing many new samples and expect similar exciting discoveries for other diseases.?

Discover How To Have A Deeper, Richer Speaking ... - Wordy Writing

When we think of the great speaking voices, those that come to mind are the likes of Vin Diesel, Kathleen Turner, James Earl Jones, Cher, Sean Connery, Morgan Freeman, Demi Moore, Barry White, and John Rhys-Davies.

What distinguishes these particular voices from those of many other great actors, is that they captivate you because of the depth, the resonance, and the true beauty of their sound.

You possess a richer, warmer, deeper voice but are most likely unaware of how to find what I refer to as your ?real? voice. I am confident that your first thought at this point is that you are already speaking with your ?real? voice. No, you are presently speaking with your habitual voice. And, there can be an enormous difference between the two.

When I was in graduate school, studying music composition, my singing professor showed me where my ?real? voice was; and, from that day on, I consistently worked at using my lower, richer sound. To hear the difference between my ?real? voice and my habitual voice was like night and day. I thank God for that particular class, that particular professor, and that particular day because it changed the entire direction of my life.

1. In order to find your ?real? voice, you will need to learn to breathe with the support of your diaphragm because all of those with the great voices use their chest cavity as their primary sounding board. Most of the population, however, is not doing that. Lazy or shallow breathing, which is typical of 99% of the population, does not allow for the chest to be used as a resonator because the air is only filling the upper portion of the chest. In addition, this lazy or shallow breathing actually increases your stress and also raises the pitch of your speaking voice.

By breathing with the support of your diaphragm, you are then able to use your entire chest cavity to power or amplify your voice thereby reducing the wear and tear on your vocal folds (cords).

2. Once you have learned this basic principle of breathing with support, you then need to find your optimum pitch (pitch refers to the highness or lowness of sound; volume, on the other hand, refers to the loudness or softness of sound). You will know that you have ?hit the spot? if you feel vibrations in your chest when you are talking (not in your neck area ? every one vibrates there!).

While your optimum pitch is as individual to you as are your fingerprints, the beauty of being able speak within your optimum range is that your voice will take on a warmth, a depth and a resonance that was previously not there.

Imagine standing at the lectern or walking into a room and captivating the attention of the group just by the sound of your voice. Can it happen to you? Absolutely. You would be surprised at how many great voices are just waiting to be found.

Learn to breathe; find your optimum pitch; and, you may be the next James Earl Jones or Kathleen Turner!

Confused by Food Labels? There's an App for That! | Home & Family

By Allison Jorgens, P.H.Ec.

Life has never been more of a balancing act than it is today. Time is often at a premium. Grocery shopping can be a hurried chore and despite good intentions, often we don?t read labels carefully to make the most healthful food choices.

Food labels have become notorious for misleading and confusing consumers. Meaningless claims can be manipulated to sound enticing. Ingredients can be declared by names that we don?t recognize, and nutrition information can be provided based on a serving size that we deem unrealistic.

Thankfully, there are apps that can help one navigate grocery aisles ? even when faced with time constraints. ?App? is short for ?application? and refers to software used on a smartphone or tablet such as an iPhone or iPad. Numerous apps are revealed upon an app store search using keywords such as ?food shopping? or ?food additives?. But which one should you choose?

Tips for Finding Helpful and Dependable Food Label Apps:

1. Look for Canadian content:
Look for apps that have a Canadian focus or include information about ingredients, claims, and Nutrition Facts tables found on Canadian labels. Many food label apps are based on U.S. food regulations and may not be applicable to Canadian food products. If you are unsure if Canadian content is included, seek clarification from the company that created the app.
Take extra care when apps include product specific allergy information. It is recommended that you verify the accuracy of this information with the food company responsible for the product. New Canadian regulations to enhance the labelling of food allergens, gluten, and sulphites come into effect on August 4, 2012. Questions are answered here by Health Canada http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/label-etiquet/allergen/project_1220_qa_qr-eng.php.

2. Consider the source:
Look for apps that have been created by creditable companies, associations, or individuals, and that reference official government regulations. If you do not recognize the source go to their website for more information.

3. Look for a quick rating system:
While shopping, you can use apps to help navigate food labels quickly. Look for apps that incorporate a speedy safety rating system for ingredients such as colour-coded happy and sad faces, or check marks and x?s. Commonly, these apps also contain detailed information about ingredients such as potential health effects, their function in food, and whether they are derived from animal, plant, synthetic or GMO sources. Such information is valuable when making food choices; however, it is the quick rating system that makes an app more user-friendly.

4. Personalize for efficiency:
The large volume of information found in some generic apps may make them too cumbersome to navigate while shopping. Take the time to look for apps that allow you to add personal settings. For example, if you are a vegetarian, some apps will allow you to filter and search ingredients based on this requirement. Other common filters or specialized lists may include: ingredients linked to allergies, genetically modified ingredients, ingredients linked to asthma, vegan ingredients, ingredients linked to cancer, gluten-free ingredients, and ingredients that may be harmful during pregnancy. Personalizing an app before shopping will help with efficiency at the store.

5. Consider ease of navigation:
If you do not consider yourself to be ?tech savvy?, look for an app that you can navigate easily. Before purchasing, check an apps? website for an explanation of how it works. Also check out customer reviews of apps you are considering. Luckily, apps are typically affordable, and sometimes even free, so you may want to consider downloading a few to find the one that is right for you. The easier it is to navigate the better the chances that you will use it.

Don?t have a smartphone or tablet? Don?t despair! Carry a book about food labels or a food additive dictionary when shopping for food. Again, look for Canadian content, creditable sources and ease of use.

Empower yourself with the information you need to make healthful and informed food choices.

Canada speeds to the podium with 'electrifying' start to the Games

LONDON ? The last time Mark Tewksbury looked just like that ? face bright with a ----eating grin all over it, huge head apparently close to combustion ? he?d won a gold medal.

That was on a grand day in the 100-metre backstroke at Barcelona in 1992. He was all of 24.

Now two decades older and in his first Olympics as the chef de mission for Team Canada, he was at the Aquatics Centre here Sunday when synchro divers Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel won a bronze for Canada?s first medal of these Games.

And in the Quebec pair the ecstatic Tewksbury saw a little bit of history being made, a tantalizing glimpse of the future and a huge psychological boost for the rest of the squad.

?Do you see me?? he asked. ?I?m electrified!?

He sure looked all lit up.

?It?s Emilie and Jennifer and amazingly, it?s also the story of our team,? he said.

====

SEE THE TOP IMAGES FROM DAY 2 OF THE OLYMPICS.

====

?We?ve got a four-time medallist [Heymans, the first female diver in the world to win medals at four consecutive Games] with a first-time medallist [Abel, just 20 and very much at the start of her career]. It?s what I hoped would happen: It?s a young team coming together with veterans, and the energy that can be created can be magical.?

A couple of things make the medal special ? that Abel is the third partner with whom Heymans has made it to the podium, which speaks to her adaptability and generosity as an athlete; that it?s a brilliant cap (though Heymans, and Abel, still have the individual version of the three-metre springboard to do and may not be finished yet) to a remarkable career for the Saint-Lambert native, and that the women won it only on the second day of the Games.

In recent years ? going back as far as Tewksbury?s gold, which came on Day 6, through to Beijing, where no Canadian got to the podium until a day later than that ? the medals have come slowly for Canadian athletes, with the bulk being won in the second week of the Games.

Left alone it may have remained merely a frustrating irritant for athletes, but for journalists, who collectively tend to pick any scab before it even forms, the wait meant that on or about Day 4 or 5, they drag out the old ?Canada chokes? stories ? and that, if nothing else, would genuinely ratchet up the pressure on those whose competitions were later in the schedule.

?Take the pressure off?? one of the writers asked Tewksbury.

?Takes the pressure from you guys off the team,? he snorted in reply.

He?s a chef de mission who has been a world champion, a motivational speaker, and a bingo caller, as the late satirical Canadian rag used to call TV folks. He knows from all sides what happens at the planet?s biggest stage.

Most nights at the athletes? village, the plan is for the Canadians to have an informal gathering to take note of the day?s events, but Sunday, Tewksbury said, would be a little bigger than that.

The bronze is obviously the big news, but, as he pointed out, Sunday was a good day for other Canadians, too.

The women?s gymnastics team qualified for the final for the first time in a non-boycott Olympics ? meaning when all the best athletes are actually there. As Elizabeth Black said afterwards, perhaps by way of explanation for the top-8 finish, ?I love the team so much more than individual [events]. The team is 100 per cent what we do.?

Out at the rowing basin near Windsor Castle, the women?s eights blew out of the starting blocks to win their heat. Other athletes got through qualifying rounds to the semifinals or set national records. As Tewksbury put it, ?There?s lots of good news ? it?s just a different narrative? and it can be team-altering.

He compared the agony of the Heymans-Abel win ? there are five dives ? to a ?shootout for 38 minutes.?

As for Heymans? accomplishment, he put it in magnificent perspective. ?In a sport like diving, the precision and being able to deliver when it counts, not just in one race ? that?s also amazing ? but in an event that has five dives, you?ve got to be really, really focused and not blow it at any point.?

The Canadian team has a number of three-and-four-time Olympians, including the multi-talented Clara Hughes, one of only four athletes to have won medals at both Summer and Winter Games.

She has another event this week, the time trial, and it?s her best one, giving her another shot at becoming only the second athlete in Olympic history to win gold in both Games. Eighty years ago, American Edward Eagan won gold in the four-man bobsleigh to match the one he won 12 years before as a boxer. Once every 80 years or so a stunner like Hughes comes around: That sounds about right.

On a day that turned rainy and cool (but, as the Brits repeat with the same dubious optimism that sees them swimming in the sea at Blackpool in May, with every chance of ?growing brighter?), Hughes finished 32nd in the road race.

?It was epic,? she said afterwards. ?It was awesome. There were so many people on the course. We were wondering if people would come and watch the women?s race, so it was amazing to have so much support in the pouring rain.?

And that?s what she sounds like on a tough day: With old pros like that in the house, what?s a youngster to learn but that electrification is a good thing?

Helicopters, artillery fire over Syria's Aleppo

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Helicopter gunships opened fire over Aleppo on Sunday and the thud of artillery boomed across neighborhoods as government forces and rebels fought for control of Syria's second city.

Opposition activists reported clashes in several rebel-held districts in the morning in what could herald the start of a decisive phase in the battle for Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub.

International peace envoy Kofi Annan and other foreign leaders said the situation in Aleppo served to emphasize the need for a negotiated political solution to the conflict in Syria, now in its 16th month.

A Syrian opposition leader urged foreign allies to circumvent the divided U.N. Security Council and intervene directly in the struggle to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

"Our friends and allies will bear responsibility for what is happening in Aleppo if they do not move soon," said Abdelbasset Sida, the head of the Syrian National Council, the main alliance for opposition to Assad.

Assad's forces, including tank columns, have been massing for an assault to wrest back neighborhoods from rebel units and skirmishing has been going on for days in districts such as southwestern Saleheddine.

One opposition activist said he had seen tanks and armored troop carriers heading towards Salaheddine on Sunday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition monitoring organization, said fighting was taking place early on Sunday in central districts of the city and a neighborhood on the western outskirts.

Rebel-held areas visited by a Reuters reporter appeared to be deserted by residents. Fighters were using houses - some of them clearly abandoned in a hurry, with food still in the fridges - as their bases.

A jet fighter flew over the city shortly after dawn.

CRUCIAL TEST

On the approaches to Aleppo from the north, many villagers were still shopping or tending their fields. But fighters from the rebel Free Syrian Army were also in evidence.

One man in his 40s, carrying his family on a motorcycle, said he was fleeing the fighting in the city.

"We are living in a war zone," he told Reuters. "I and my relatives are just going back and forth, trying to stay away from the fighting. We left Aleppo when we saw smoke and helicopters firing."

The battle for the city of 2.5 million people is seen as a crucial test for a government that has committed military resources to holding control of its two main power centers, Aleppo in the north and the capital Damascus.

"If the regime is defeated, it will be a decisive stage for Syria," the Observatory's Rami Abdulrahman said.

While neither side has managed to gain the upper hand, the uprising is being watched anxiously outside Syria amid concern that sectarian conflict could spill over its borders.

Minority Alawites have dominated through more than 40 years of Assad family rule in Syria, which has a Sunni Muslim majority.

Military experts believe that while Assad's more powerful forces will overcome the rebels in Aleppo and other cities, it risks loss of control in the countryside because the loyalty of large sections of the army is in doubt.

The British-based Observatory said 26 people were killed in Aleppo on Saturday. Across Syria it reported fighting in Deraa, the cradle of the revolution, Homs, the scene of some of the bloodiest combat, and Hama, which killed a total of 190 people, including 41 soldiers.

Video footage provided by the Observatory showed smoke rising over apartment blocks in the city into a hazy sky on Saturday. The sound of sporadic gunfire could be clearly heard.

FRENCH PUSH

In Paris, French President Francois Hollande said he would keep trying to convince Assad's main defenders, Russia and China, which have Security Council vetoes, to support harder sanctions against him.

"I will once more address Russia and China so that they recognize there would be chaos and civil war if Bashar al-Assad isn't soon stopped," Hollande said.

The Syrian government knew it was doomed and would use force until the very end, Hollande said.

"The role of the member states of the U.N. Security Council is to step in as quickly as possible."

Russia played down speculation that it might offer Assad asylum, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov saying on Saturday Moscow had no such agreement and was not even thinking about it.

Russia has said international support for Syrian rebels would lead to "more blood" and the government could not be expected to willingly give in to its opponents.

It has also said it would not allow searches of Russian-flagged ships under new European Union sanctions governing vessels suspected of carrying weapons to Syria.

The increase in fighting in Aleppo follows a bomb attack on July 18 that killed Assad's defense minister and three other senior officials in Damascus, a development that led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.
