Researchers develop spray-on batteries

A team of researchers from Rice University has found a way to power almost any object by spraying with a paint that has been formulated to function as a battery.

The rechargeable lithium-ion batteries now found in many mobile phones and laptops may one day be sprayed like paint onto virtually any surface, potentially ushering in a new generation of thin, flexible devices, researchers say.

Spray-paintable batteries even might become available to the general public someday at hardware stores, the scientists added.

Lithium-ion batteries power most portable electronics nowadays, but their spiral, jelly-roll-like design generally limits them to rectangular or cylindrical shapes.

['Smart Clothing' Could Become New Wearable Gadgets]

Now researchers have succeeded in painting these batteries onto a diverse range of surfaces, including glass slides, stainless steel, flexible plastic sheets, glazed ceramic tiles, and even the curved side of a beer mug.

"We can convert almost any object to a battery," Neelam Singh, a materials scientist at Rice University in Houston, told InnovationNewsDaily.

He and other researchers spent painstaking hours formulating paints that could function as the separate components of a battery. In their search, they looked at materials as diverse as carbon nanotubes and ultrafine graphite powders. They next painted these ingredients in layers in the proper order onto surfaces to create the batteries.

"Spray painting is already an industrial process, so it would be very easy to incorporate this into industry," Singh said.

Batteries that the researchers printed onto nine ceramic bathroom tiles could readily power 40 red LED lights. One of these battery tiles was topped with a solar power cell that helped charge the batteries, suggesting the researchers could give any surface the capability to both harvest and store energy.

The material onto which the batteries were painted apparently had no effect on the performance of the devices. This suggests this technology could find its way into a wide range of construction materials and household objects.

"You could turn your home into a battery," Singh said.

The researchers do caution that fabricating these batteries requires the use of toxic, flammable and potentially corrosive materials in an oxygen-free and moisture-free environment. Employing safer battery materials along with oxygen- and moisture-resistant paints could allow even the general public to spray-paint batteries.

[Transparent Batteries Help Mobile Devices Go See-Through]

"People paint their homes and cars often," Singh said. "I think it will be possible for people to paint batteries themselves."

The scientists have filed for a patent on their work. They detailed their findings online June 28 in the journal Scientific Reports.

Continual Rises in U.S. Energy Consumption Beg for Improved Efficiency and Sustainable Forms of Generation Finds Frost & Sullivan

The United States is challenged by exorbitant energy demands, accounting for 26 percent of the world?s energy consumption, and corresponding greenhouse gas emissions. Currently, the nation imports nearly 30 percent of the energy it consumes, and minimal reduction in imports is anticipated to 2020. While trying to address the issue of energy dependence on foreign supply in light of forecasted unremitting growth in energy consumption, the United States has embarked on its most aggressive movement toward a sustainable future. Renewable energy, greater efficiency in consumption, and more intelligent transmission and distribution methods will be the main focuses for overcoming the energy challenges that lay ahead.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan's (energy.frost.com) U.S. Energy Challenges for 2020 research finds that United States energy consumption will increase by 7.3 percent during a 10-year period over 2010 levels. To meet this mounting need, the market has witnessed strong growth in renewable technologies, which has been supported by the focus on domestic energy production and sustainability. Solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power are the fastest growing renewable technologies and will represent more than 40 percent of electricity generation in 2020.

If you are interested in more information on this research, please send an email to Britni Myers, Corporate Communications, at britni.myers[.]frost.com, with your full name, company name, title, telephone number, company email address, company website, city, state and country.

According to the Department of Energy, 223 gigawatts (GW) of new generating capacity will be needed between 2010 and 2035. Local transmission infrastructure capability, currently in the process of being upgraded to withstand increasing loads and new forms of generation, is an important requirement to deploy large renewable energy projects that also meet the necessary GW capacity. Additionally, the transmission line shortage is threatening to slow the growth of wind energy and large utility-scale solar projects, and could prevent some states from meeting renewable energy mandates. High capital costs further challenge renewable technologies growth, highlighting the industry's need for government financial incentives.

"Increased energy consumption over the forecast period of 2010 to 2020 is driven by increases in population and economic growth,? said Frost & Sullivan Senior Industry Analyst Georgina Benedetti. "The population in the United States is projected to increase by 7.5 percent from 2011 levels, reaching 324 million by 2020.?

Section 1603 of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 was one of the main drivers for solar installations during 2010 and 2011, but the market has taken a recent hit with the failure of Congress to extend Section 1603 of the Treasury Program. Similarly, while expiration of the Loan Guarantee, production tax credit, and investment tax credit programs are imminent; these items fueled a 33 percent increase in wind energy in 2011 from prior year's levels. The market is vulnerable to a severe halt in production if these incentives are not extended.

To combat U.S. energy challenges, the industry has focused on the acceleration of renewable energy deployment and use of energy efficiency to displace imports and improve the balance between supply and demand. Supporting this movement is the technology trend of innovating to zero, where companies are focusing their R&D on more zero-emission technologies, such as wind power, geothermal energy, solar PV, and biomass.

"U.S. gross domestic production per capita is projected to increase 17.1 percent by 2020,? said Benedetti. "With the anticipated recovery of the American economy, an improvement in the standard of living is expected, which is linked to increased uses of electronics and domestic appliances that further increase the country's energy consumption.?

There are a lot of reasons many people invest in the world of commercial real estate. But these reasons must have something to do with a basic knowledge you have acquired about this particular business. The more you find out, the more money you can make through commercial real estate. The advice in this article is a good start for seeking out new knowledge and adding to your existing knowledge base about commercial real estate.

Make sure you partner with a reputable attorney before tackling commercial real estate financing. Because real estate investing is full of unexpected pitfalls and setbacks, you need a savvy professional to cover your legal liabilities.

Make sure you never underestimate anyone when it comes to real estate, not your private lenders or your investors, know what everyone is capable of. Because properties may be sold without ever being listed, you increase your chances of becoming part of these opportunities if you have networked with the appropriate people.

Purchase property that has more units. If there are many units, it would be easier for you to spread the income that you are getting from each unit. Many commercial real estate investors look at unit numbers first and will not even consider settling for a property with less than ten sources of income.

google_ad_channel = ?7940249670, ? + AB_cat_channel + AB_unit_channel;
google_language = ?en?;
google_ad_region = ?test?;

Advertise your property for sale locally and outside your region. Most individuals make the error of thinking that only the people in their area are the ones interested in purchasing their property. Many private investors are interested in cheap or affordable properties in other areas of the country or world.

There is a chance of drastic inflation in the upcoming years that commercial investors in real estate should be aware of. In the past, many leases had built-in clauses that made adjustments according to the Consumer Price Index, which protected signers from inflation. This practice is nearly extinct today, which can leave you susceptible to losses that are caused by inflation.

Make sure that the commercial real estate you want to purchase is equipped with connections to all of the utilities you?ll need. Your business has its own utility needs, but you are most likely going to need water, sewer, electric and possibly even gas.

Standard lease forms should not be signed lightly. Large corporations may add special requirements to the lease, which you need to take time to read. By carefully perusing the document, you?ll avoid potential headaches and heartaches that a commercial lease sometimes produces.

Commercial property is an investment. This investment is not just money, but also time. Not only will you have to search out the right property, you?ll likely have to make repairs or renovations to it after the purchase. Don?t abandon your investments because they are eating into your personal time. Later, you?ll be rewarded for the time and money you have invested.

There are a myriad of reasons to expand your monetary investments into commercial real estate. All it takes is determination, and a good base of information. Apply the advice from the preceding paragraphs towards your commercial property dealings and you can be well on the path to maximized profits and rewards.

Contestants stand during a beauty pageant for Holocaust survivors in the northern Israeli city of Haifa on June 28, 2012. The winner, Hava Hershkovitz, is on the right.

The Associated Press reports ??Fourteen women who lived through the horrors of World War II paraded on stage Thursday night in an unusual pageant, vying for the honor of Israel's first 'Miss Holocaust Survivor'. The unusual event was hosted by an Israeli group that aids Holocaust survivors. Around 20 women, all in their 80s and 90s, told the audience their life stories.?

"I have the privilege to show the world that Hitler wanted to exterminate us and we are alive. We are also enjoying life. Thank God it's that way," said Esther Libber, a 74-year-old runner-up who fled her home in Poland as a child, hid in a forest and was rescued by a Polish woman. She said she lost her entire immediate family.

Billed by organizers as a celebration of life, the event also stirred controversy. In a country where millions have been touched by the Holocaust, many argued that judging aging women who had suffered so much on physical appearance was inappropriate, and even offensive.?Read the full story.

While this may be something that you are scared of, don't worry - there is help out there. Of course, you need to find a company that can help you control this problem. Better yet, you want to find somebody who can help you get rid of the rodents once and for all. This will make you feel much better about yourself as well as your property as a whole.

There are many steps to take if you are interested in rodent control:

1. Find out what type of problem you are having. This is the first step in finding a solution. Of course, you may not know what type of rodent you are dealing with unless you have seen it with your own eyes. If nothing else, gather as much information as possible - you are going to need this in the near future. 2. Contact a rodent control company that is well known for offering services in your part of Los Angeles. When you do this, you know that you are now in good hands. It is during this time that you should share any knowledge you have with the company you decide to hire. This will go a long way in helping the worker pinpoint the issue and put a plan of attack into place. 3. Make sure the problem is solved sooner rather than later. It is one thing to call in a rodent control company. It is another thing entirely to make sure you are no longer facing any issues. Keep an eye on your property in the future to ensure that the problem does not come back. How to Find a Provider

With so many rodent control companies out there, you need to find the one that is going to be best for your property. This means a provider that offers a high level of effective service at a price you can afford.

Here are three questions to ask as you attempt to settle on the right company:

1. Do I have any experience hiring a rodent control company? 2. How much money am I willing to pay to get this problem under control once and for all? 3. Do I know of any companies in the area that have a good reputation for being able to handle this type of problem?

When you answer these three questions, you will find yourself in position to make an informed decision in the near future.

There is nothing worse than a rodent problem. That being said, you have to focus on finding a solution as soon as possible. When you hire a rodent control company in Los Angeles, you at least know that you are getting the level of service you deserve.

These steps can help you control any rodent problem you may be dealing with. The sooner you call a professional the sooner you can rid your property of pests.

Panguite: Ancient mineral newly discovered

Study of a 1969 fireball meteorite has unearthed a new mineral, named panguite. This mineral was likely around when the solar system formed, billions of years ago.?

By Jeanna Bryner,?LiveScience / June 26, 2012

The new mineral, panguite, occurring with the scadium-rich silicate called davisite was found embedded in a piece of the Allende meteorite. Scientist believe the newly discovered mineral formed when the solar system was in its infancy.

A fireball that tears across the sky is not just a one-time skywatching event ? it can reap scientific dividends long afterward. In fact, one that lit up Mexico's skies in 1969 scattered thousands of meteorite bits across the northern Mexico state of Chihuahua. And now, decades later, that meteorite, named Allende, has divulged a new mineral called panguite.

Panguite is believed to be among?the oldest minerals in the solar system, which is about 4.5 billion years old. Panguite belongs to a class of refractory minerals that could have formed only under the extreme temperatures and conditions present in the infant solar system.

The name of the titanium dioxide mineral, which has been approved by the International Mineralogical Association, honors Pan Gu, said in Chinese mythology to be the first living being who created the world by separating yin from yang (forming the earth and sky). [Infographic: The Science of Meteorites]

"Panguite is an especially exciting discovery since it is not only a new mineral, but also a material previously unknown to science," study researcher Chi Ma, a senior scientist at Caltech, said in a statement.

Until now, panguite had neither been seen in nature nor created in a lab. "It's brand-new to science," Ma told LiveScience in an interview.

The scientists used a scanning-electron microscope to view the panguite within a so-called ultra-refractory inclusion embedded within the meteorite. Inclusions are the minerals that get trapped inside meteorites as they are forming. The ultra-refractory type includes minerals that can resist high temperatures and other conditions in extreme environments, such as those thought to exist as our solar system was forming.

High-tech lab analyses revealed panguite's chemical composition and crystal structure, which Ma said is new, and as such, could be explored for novel engineering materials.

The Allende meteorite, where the mineral was hidden, is the largest of a class of carbonaceous chondrites found on Earth. Chondrites are?primitive meteorites?that scientists think were remnants shed from the original building blocks of planets. Most meteorites found on Earth fit into this group. (When meteors hit the ground they are called meteorites.)

Before they reach terra firma, most meteorites are fragments of asteroids (space rocks that travel through the solar system), while others are mere cosmic dust shed by comets.?Rare meteorites?are impact debris from the surfaces of the moon and Mars. The Allende meteorite likely came from?the asteroid belt?between Mars and Jupiter, scientists say.

Studying panguite and other components of the Allende meteorite are essential for understanding the origins of the solar system, Ma said. In fact, Ma's team has discovered nine new minerals, including panguite, in the Allende space rock.

The new mineral is detailed in the July issue of the journal American Mineralogist.

(AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered an overhaul of the upper house of Parliament in an apparent reaction to criticism that the Federation Council is little more than a vacation retreat for officials.

Putin said in an address to the Council on Wednesday that the reforms should make it "more democratic."

Members are currently elected by local legislatures. Putin's bill, which is expected to get parliamentary approval, would allow elected regional governors to appoint a member of their team to the Council. The reform would make elected governors accountable for the members they appoint.

Putin said prospective members of the Council, widely seen as a rubber stamp for the Kremlin, should be members of their local legislatures and residents of the regions they represent for at least five years.

Australian Gay and Lesbian Law Blog: Qld: to exclude lesbian co ...

Last week the Queensland Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie announced in debate on the changes to the Civil Partnership Law:

?What we are also going to deal with is the other issue that that bill dealt with and that is parentage presumptions and parentage orders. Honourable members will recall at the time that the member for Southern Downs supported two lesbian women, who had a natural birth, both having parentage orders. I make it absolutely clear that going forward the government will be amending the provisions around altruistic surrogacy and the Surrogacy Act to repeal the provisions with respect to same-sex couples, de factos of less than two years and singles. That is the policy position we took years ago when we debated the Surrogacy Act.?

What the Attorney General was saying in effect was that the amendments to the Status of Children Act 1978 (Qld) contained in the Surrogacy Act 2010 (Qld) and the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act 2003 (Qld) was that lesbian co-mothers will no longer be recognised on birth certificates.?

This recognition was brought about by virtue of the Surrogacy Act 2010 (Qld) and has resulted in a number of lesbian co-mothers being recognised on birth certificates as ?parent?.? The legislation to allow this has been consistent with other States such as New South Wales.? It is not known if the Government proposal is that women who are now recognised on birth certificates as ?parents? by virtue of being a lesbian co-mother will be removed from the birth certificate or whether? it is only to apply in the future.

The proposed change will mean that co-mothers will not be recognised in a moment of joy namely at the time of the birth certificate as a ?parent? but will be recognised as in a moment of pain if and when their relationships break down because the effect of their actions under the Family Law Act will be that they are ?parents?.

Even worse for a lesbian mother seeking child support, although the Family Law Act specifies that the co-mother would be a ?parent?,? internal procedures with the Child Support Agency are not always so clear cut and I have been advised of difficulties in establishing ?parentage?? in dealing with the agency.? The planned move will in my view make it more expensive and tie up tax payers resources in the Federal Magistrate?s Court unnecessarily as to argument as to whether or not the co-mother was a parent, a step that is easily avoided by having her named on the birth certificate.

I will be speaking at a forum tonight at the Sportsman?s Hotel, Leichhardt Street, Spring Hill at 6.30pm on this point.
