EVA is all set to upgrade their business class | Business Travel Blog

According to the up market news EVA has planned to reduce the number of seats in business class on the plane but is going to increase the fare of the remaining seats to as much as twenty percent. Only yesterday it was announced by EVA Airways that it had plans to spend hundred million US dollars that would be required to upgrade its business class in fleet of 15 Boeing 777-300 ER aircrafts. This was in the hope that focusing on the premium customers will help them increase their revenue.

EVA is the second largest airline carrier of the nation. The carrier seems to finish up gradation by the August next year. The first plane to get facelift is by the end of this month and is expected to operate from June 2nd on New York ? Taipei route. Chang Kuo-Wei who is the president of EVA in briefing to media told that as they are facing very tough competition in economy class services, the company wants to attract more premium customers to their airlines through up gradation. Chang also showed his concern on rising budget airlines that made it difficult for their company to focus entirely on the economy class. This is the reason why this company decided to follow the example of Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airlines to target and concentrate more business class passengers. Chang said that to attain this, the company thought of novel idea to reduce the number of seats and to increase the fare by 20 percent which would increase their revenue to a great extent. Chang also added that it was good idea to invest more when there is market downbeat and the prospects of airlines were low this year and was apt time for up gradation when all the product prices were low.

He also showed his expectation in the improvement of revenue in the second quarter as against the first quarter where there is higher sale in cargo and also the freight rate and volume is stable. However the peak season from July to September remains the most testing time for the airlines to show its ability added Chang and continued that rise in the fuel prices added to the woes and inversely affected the profitability of the company. Company is determined to put in hard work and vigorously trying to improve sales performance but all our hard work is only going to benefit and will be reaped by oil companies he said. Chang also added that unlike Delta Air Lines Inc, they did not have plans of buying oil refineries as they lacked the expertise of running the oil refining company.

According to TWSE ? Taiwan Stock exchange, EVA?s per share value was marked at NT$0.33 which meant net loss of NT$1.08 billion in the first quarter. Compared to this they had netted a profit of NT$269.32 million with per share rate of NT$0.08 last year. However the statistics show that the company has chalked in revenue of NT$25.57 billion for the period January to March which is a 5.7% increase from the last year.

Question: I recently moved to San Diego. I have cousins who live in Guadalajara, and I have a few other friends and relatives elsewhere in Mexico as well. I plan to be driving down to Mexico fairly often. What's the cheapest way to get decent Mexican auto insurance?

Answer: It's smart to be making these plans ahead of time. You'll love living in San Diego, California; getting to Mexico is so easy! It's even easier when you have the right Mexican insurance for San Diego travelers. People who don't go to Mexico too often generally buy their policies at the border or online. You should avoid buying Mexican auto insurance for San Diego residents at the border at all costs. It's overpriced and often lower in quality. The Internet is the best place to get Mexican insurance for San Diego travelers, but what do you do if you go to Mexico all the time?

Although buying Mexico car insurance for San Diego vacationers online is a snap, you're sure to get pretty tired of it after doing it again and again. That's why you should consider yearly coverage instead. With so many friends and relatives in Mexico, you'll probably be driving around down there several days out of the month. It would be worth your while to consider annual Mexican insurance for San Diego residents.

Once you've invested in yearly Mexican insurance for San Diego travelers, you won't have to worry about it again for a full year. Any time you want to go to Mexico, you'll be able to hop in your car and go. Barring any holdups at the border, you'll be down in Mexico in no time. Don't rule out annual Mexican auto insurance for San Diego residents before getting a quote. Most people are really blown away by how cheap it is. It's easy to assume that 365 days of coverage will cost 365 times as much as a daily policy, but that's not the case at all. In fact, you will get a really great discount by purchasing yearly insurance. That's particularly true if you buy your policy online, which is what you should definitely do. Once you've found the right policy, you'll just have to pay for it and print it out. Keep a copy in your glove box, and fold another one up and keep it in your wallet. That's all there is to it!

?You Have to Pay for That?: California City Bills Obama $35K After Campaign Fundraiser

Newport Beach, California Bills Obama $35,000 For Extra Security During Campaign Stop

With California?s current deficit woes, it has seemingly become difficult to justify the tens of thousands of dollars it can cost the taxpayer in extra security measures for Obama?s campaign stops.

That is why, according to the Los Angeles Times, Newport Beach has billed the president $35,043.04.

The L.A. Times continues:

City Manager Dave Kiff said the invoice was his idea.

?I think it is appropriate to treat it like a private event ? if another private event that large and which required that much police presence occurred, we would bill the event sponsor,? he said in an email. ?If the president was here on presidential business, we likely would not have billed for that.?

[...]

The expenses include costs for a police lieutenant, sergeant, two officers, a reserve officer, a senior dispatch officer, a community service officer plus overtime.

CBS analyzed the bill, and interviewed locals on the matter:

The invoice, which is dated May 10th and is due June 9th, had not been acknowledged or paid as of Thursday, according to the L.A. Times.

?Our country is broke,? a man living in the neighborhood where Obama held his fundraiser said.? ?You have to pay for that.?

What remains to be seen is whether Obama will actually pay off this debt?and with whose money.

Hair loss doesn?t have to happen?it?s as simple as that. If you want to learn how to prevent hair loss, become proactive. The best way to stop hair fall is to take good care of your hair. There are several ways on how you can nurture your hair to keep your beautiful and healthy locks.

The following are some special pointers?

Keep your hair clean.

The most essential thing that you should remember is to always keep your hair clean. Wash your hair regularly especially after you put on hair products like gels, hair sprays, creams or lotions. You also need to use mild and natural shampoo and conditioner that are especially made for your hair type.

Protect your hair from possible damage caused by the sun.

Dust and direct sunlight damages the hair. So, as much as possible, cover your head when you are planning to go outdoors. You can use hats or scarves to protect your hair from too much exposure to the sun.

Let your hair dry naturally.

Hair is at its weakest when it is wet. Never rub a towel on wet hair and do not comb it vigorously. However, you can wrap the towel on your hair after bathing but do not make it too tight. After a few minutes, take the towel off and let your hair dry in natural air. Use wide-toothed comb when combing wet hair. Also avoid the use of hair blower and hair brush because it makes the hair dry.

Massage your scalp.

Another way to stop hair fall and stimulate the strands to grow is to give yourself a good scalp massage. This will allow you to maintain a healthy blood flow to your scalp, which will stimulate growth. You can make the massage even more effective by using essentials oils for hair regrowth.

Avoid hairstyles that put too much stress or tension on your hair.

Braids and extreme hairstyles may break the hair and eventually lead to hair loss. The same is true with tight pony tails. You should also avoid too much using of hair pins and elastic band on your hair.

Eating a balanced diet to prevent hair loss.

Vitamin deficiency and iron deficiency causes hair loss. Eating a balanced diet will help you stop hair fall from recurrence. The foods that are rich with vitamins and minerals for hair loss include green vegetables, fruits and dairy products. Eating two kinds of nuts everyday will also help strengthen the hair.

If you want to stop hair fall, you must be guided by the above mentioned tips. By following these tips, you will not be worried about hair fall anymore. Remember, an ounce of prevention is a better than a pound of cure.

Facebook fallout: Silicon Valley won't snub Morgan Stanley

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Silicon Valley isn't quite ready to dump Morgan Stanley over the Facebook IPO fiasco.

It could be said that playing a role in botching the world's biggest tech initial public offering would be enough to kick its lead banker out of the club, or at least to the curb, but a tarnished image hasn't necessarily dented Morgan Stanley's position as a go-to underwriter for Silicon Valley, according to bankers, venture capitalists and start-ups.

The reasons run from the unusual size of the Facebook deal - a $16 billion offering - to blaming the Nasdaq, to the strong relationships Morgan Stanley's lead tech banker Michael Grimes and his team have crafted over the years with deep-pocketed venture capitalist firms and executives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A week after the Facebook fallout, Morgan Stanley is - according to Silicon Valley sources - counting on these strengths to trump investor anger and lawsuits related to the move by its analyst to cut his forecasts for Facebook's revenue and earnings just days ahead of the IPO and then only tell the firm's major clients rather than publish those revisions widely.

"It's still going to be the rare occasion when somebody who has the chance to have them, leaves them out," said Scott Sandell, a venture capitalist at NEA, speaking about Morgan Stanley and its main rival in the Valley, Goldman Sachs.

Morgan Stanley was the No. 1 bookrunner for U.S. technology IPOs last year, advising on 16 of the 37 new issues, according to data from Thomson Reuters. So far this year, it has held on to that top spot.

There are at least half a dozen high-profile technology companies with pending IPOs that have already selected Morgan Stanley as a lead bookrunner, including Palo Alto Networks and ServiceNow. And those are not expected to be derailed, or delayed, said sources close to the matter. A spokesperson for Palo Alto Networks declined to comment. ServiceNow was not available for comment.

"I still think very highly of Morgan Stanley," said Jef Graham, a serial entrepreneur who is currently chief executive of RGB Networks, an online video-advertising company that could go public next year. He has worked with the bank on several merger and acquisition deals.

One reason: tech issuers know the big mutual funds and other institutional investors who will buy the largest chunks of their shares respect Morgan Stanley, in part because the bank is very selective about the issuers it represents.

"Goldman and Morgan Stanley on your (prospectus) cover recently - it's been a stamp of approval," said Tige Savage, a venture capitalist at Revolution LLC.

BLAME GAME

Leading tech investors said that while Morgan Stanley is being thrown under the bus for some of the unprecedented events surrounding Facebook's IPO, there is plenty of blame to go around.

"Morgan Stanley's services are a commodity and it is hard to blame them specifically because there are many people involved in the decision," said one of the investors, requesting anonymity because his firm has held discussions with management.

The bank on Thursday also pointed the finger at Nasdaq for not getting trade execution data from the exchange in a timely way on the initial day of trading.

And the final line of defense for Morgan Stanley that's now doing the rounds of the Valley: the Facebook IPO was a one-off - a giant offering in social media, a relatively untested sector that any bank could have mishandled.

"It's a problem with the IPO system, not Morgan Stanley specifically. If it was another bank they would have had similar problems," said a hedge fund manager who attended the Facebook IPO roadshow and closely followed other Morgan Stanley-run tech IPOs such as Zynga late last year.

"There may be some short-term decisions that go to other banks. But it's not like any other bank would have been less incompetent on the Facebook IPO," he added.

And amid a flurry of headlines this week about subpoenas and lawsuits against the firm, tech start-ups are keenly aware Morgan Stanley did succeed with Facebook by an important metric: making sure a company got the maximum amount of cash.

If things go wrong, entrepreneurs know the bank has the resources to step in and buy shares to support the stock, as Morgan Stanley did on Friday, Facebook's first day of trading and the only day it closed above its IPO price. Though the effort to keep the stock above $38 a share proved fleeting, the move will likely be a positive for future clients.

"You never know if the market is going to be hot or cold the day you price, and you need the bank to be there to support you," said Glenn Solomon, a partner at GGV Capital.

TARNISHED BRAND

Morgan Stanley is still expected to face tougher scrutiny post-Facebook.

"What was perceived as the best of the best got the Facebook offering, and the general perception was it wasn't handled perfectly," said Revolution's Savage. "They have a question to answer now that they didn't have before."

Another way this ripples through the Valley, bankers said, is that companies could solicit advice more frequently and carefully from all their major underwriters, not just the bank in the prime position, known as 'lead left' - a term for the underwriter on the top left-hand side of the IPO prospectus.

"Having a real joint lead on an IPO - that's the counter argument that has emerged from this," said one investment banker from a rival firm.

But at this point, Silicon Valley is still expected to court Morgan Stanley.

"There's a little bit of a tarnish on the Morgan Stanley brand versus where they were a week ago. But is it going to prevent them from being picked? I don't think so," a second rival investment banker said.

Exclusive: Syria grain trade signals alarm for Assad

LONDON/HAMBURG (Reuters) - Syria is struggling to meet its grain import needs because of sanctions, raising the risk of bread shortages that could sap public support for President Bashar al-Assad as he tries to snuff out a 15-month-old uprising.

Trade sources said a reluctance among foreign banks, shipowners and grain traders to sell to import-dependent Syria - even though food is not itself subject to sanctions - has forced Damascus into an array of unusually small deals, many arranged by shadowy middlemen around the Middle East and Asia.

On Friday, in what might prove to be a turning point on a path toward a politically corrosive food crisis, government data showed the domestic grain harvest falling well short of target and the state grains agency failing to find a single acceptable offer to fulfill a major import tender it issued last month to buy animal feed for its livestock farmers.

"Syrian purchase interest has fallen off in the last 10 days or so," one trade source familiar with exports to Syria of wheat and other grains for human consumption and animal feed told Reuters. "Banks are becoming tougher in checking compliance with sanctions. It is becoming more difficult to get finance from any banks."

State currency reserves have been depleted and the Syrian pound has lost nearly half its value, adding to import problems.

Data for stocks in Syrian granaries is kept secret but there has so far been little widespread disruption evident in subsidized supplies of bread - a staple of a diet in which every Syrian consumes on average half a kilo (a pound) of wheat a day.

But international aid agencies, which are already helping up to a million Syrians stave off hunger, report patchy but spreading food shortages and sharply rising prices. Grain traders cite anecdotal evidence that stocks, concentrated in the restive countryside, are being run down or looted. That may mean the government needs to import more for the big cities it controls.

With international traders saying financial sanctions have bitten hard into purchases, violence hindering back-door imports via Lebanon and the conflict hampering Syria's domestic harvest in the coming months, analysts see mounting risks for Assad.

"Despite the regime's efforts to conceal the full extent of the deterioration, both from its own citizens and from the outside world, it is beyond a doubt that the Syrian economy is in a state of full collapse thanks to the cumulative effect of the various multilateral and bilateral sanctions," said Peter Pham, a director at Washington think-tank the Atlantic Council.

SHORTAGES MAY UNDERMINE LEGITIMACY

Syria relies on imports for about half of its annual needs of 7-8 million tonnes of grain, U.N. data shows. Water shortages, blight and conflict hit last year's harvest.

Traditional secrecy - and the violence that has hit drought-stricken farming areas which were the flashpoint for revolt - makes it hard to calculate how quickly supplies might run short. Not only bakeries are dependent on cereals, but also farmers raising poultry, sheep and meat and dairy cattle.

"A humanitarian disaster would further erode Bashar's claim that the current regime is legitimate," said Anthony Skinner with risk analysts Maplecroft in London. "High inflation and shortages in food supplies will also likely place the families of underpaid rank-and-file soldiers under increasing duress and may provide them with yet another incentive to jump ship."

Dealers in the grain trade hubs of Hamburg and London said difficulties in finding finance and insurance for shipments to sanctions-hit Syria were stifling offers from major exporters.

Of a 150,000-tonne animal feed tender launched last month, one said: "It appears to have been too difficult to undertake a formal tender in this time of sanctions.

Ukrainian exporters cited sanctions for a sharp fall in their sales to Syria in recent weeks, having sold 620,000 tonnes of corn and wheat to Damascus since October.

The European Union, United States and Arab League have led the campaign that bars financial dealings with Syria. Food imports are not a target but, in a bid to sidestep the measures, hundreds of thousands of tonnes of grain, notably from Ukraine and Russia, have been shipped to ports in Lebanon and Turkey this year for trucking overland into Syria.

One major grains supplier in the Middle East complained that some financiers were over-reacting: "You see some banks exaggerate their reactions," he said. "They hear Syria and they just don't want to deal anymore. Other banks are more flexible."

RISE OF THE MIDDLE MEN

Whether by sea or land, critical players in the Syria trade are now contractors with suitable contacts and a willingness to risk their own cash on transactions that flirt with bans on Syrian banks by working between Syrians and foreign exporters.

"The middle men are driving this trade and can make serious money. Syria is making cash payments in euros or dollars through foreign exchange bureaux in places like Lebanon and the middle men will make the transactions from their accounts," one trade source said. "They need to conceal deals."

Private entrepreneurs, many previously unknown to major traders and based in Lebanon, Turkey, India and elsewhere, have been appearing to make purchases on the international market.

One Middle Eastern grain trader said the unusually small vessels arriving at Syrian ports with shipments of grain a fraction the size of a normally commercially viable shipment was an indication that Syria was losing the trust of major operators.

"Syria is in big trouble and can no longer call the shots on terms and conditions," the trader said. "So they will try and take whatever they can even on tiny vessels."

Port and ship tracking data, indicated three ships this week docked at Tartous carrying respectively from Turkey, Ukraine and Egypt: 27,000 tonnes of wheat; 8,000 tonnes of soybean; and a cargo of animal feed of 2,000 tonnes. Typical commercial grains cargoes are around 60,000 tonnes apiece.

Further up the Mediterranean coast at Latakia, Syria's main general cargo port, just a single vessel, carrying less than 10,000 tonnes of Ukrainian wheat from the Black Sea port of Mikolaiv, or Nikolayev, made a delivery in the past two days.

HARVEST FORECASTS SLASHED

In better times, Syria has been a net exporter of grain. But intensive, state-sponsored production drives since the 1990s have drained the water table in areas like the Hauran plain, where the uprising began last year in the southern city Deraa among a population hit hard by drought and crop blight.

On Friday, an Agriculture Ministry official gave estimated harvest figures for this year that were a quarter lower than targets cited by the state news agency SANA. A production forecast of 3.7 million tonnes of wheat and 843,000 tonnes of barley compared to targets of 4.6 and 1.6 million respectively.

Independent analysts suggest state statistics may be optimistic. Influential French forecaster Strategie Grains said it had slashed its harvest estimate for Syria's 2012 crop for soft and durum wheat by 900,000 tonnes to 2.5 million tonnes. That compared with a harvest of 3.3 million tonnes in 2011.

"The main producer regions are very much at the centre of the civil war and although it is difficult to evaluate the impact this will have on the harvest, a significant disruption seems certain," the firm said in its latest report last week.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, a benchmark for global grains traders, estimated last year's wheat harvest at 3.85 million tonnes and barley at 700,000 tonnes. It estimates total annual grains consumption in Syria at 6.9 million tonnes.

U.N. officials have estimated at least a million Syrians need help with food and other essentials but have failed to agree a supply deal because the Syrian government wants to have control of the distribution of the aid.

"Food security of vulnerable populations in Syria is currently fragile," said World Food Programme spokeswoman Abeer Etefa. "Overall poverty levels are also increasing and access to basic supplies and services is deteriorating."

As Saddam Hussein showed in Iraq in the 1990s, authoritarian governments can survive under sanctions despite severe hardships for ordinary people, though the continued violence in Syria, which has cost over 10,000 lives since March 2011, shows that Assad faces a stiffer internal challenge than did Saddam.

Today, in contrast to Syria, its much bigger, oil-rich, ally Iran has managed to sidestep Western sanctions using alternative financing routes to buy grain on international markets lately.

"While Syria's ally Iran has rather creatively sought to evade its own sanctions noose, Damascus has neither the experience nor the resources available to Tehran with which to play a prolonged cat-and-mouse game," the Atlantic Council's Pham said. "The Assad regime's foreign currency reserves are simply depleting at a rate faster than it can replenish them."

#morningyard ? Orange County photographer | Tara Whitney ...

I have a new project on Instagram with the hashtag: #morningyard. It came about because of my morning ritual.

Each morning after the hustle of getting the kids out the door to their four different schools, I give myself a big deep exhale of a moment on my patio. I make my smoothie (or coffee on weekends) and hop into that lovely rattan rocker and tip my head back. I hear the gentle drone of cars on a nearby street and the birds in the trees. I feel the breeze on my skin. I look up and watch the leaves move. I walk around and check on all of my babies plants, pruning and watering as needed. I get damp grass stuck to my toes. I get dirt under my nails. I fill up my senses, which in turn fills up my energy tank and centers me.

This has become my thinking spot.

I have been improving this space for the last five months. Prior to that, it was neglected and avoided for years. My kids trashed it in their toddler-hoods and I didn?t bother to care. As they grew out of the wrecking phase, all I could see was what was wrong with it. After changing my attitude, this was one of the first things I worked on. Slow and steady, with a small non budget, I first cleaned everything out ? adios broken toys from 2004! I hunted for planters and extra seating at garage sales and flea markets. I made do with what we had. I made the decision to go almost strictly with succulents as potted landscape because they are drought tolerant and sturdy, not wussy annuals I would have to change out or water regularly. I knew I wanted to set things up simply, to be sustained easily by me even on my busiest week. These small steps have entirely changed our yard and given us an entirely new room to spend time in. I could have NEVER imagined when I set out to spruce up the patio, what it would come to mean to me.

We have large (expensive) issues that need to be addressed ? shoddy sprinkler patterns, leveling/grading, no shade, dying grass, ugly landscaping.

So, I have big plans. We want to lay out an entirely new sprinkler system, build a patio cover, build garden beds, set up our compost bin, and create another seating area where we currently have grass, in order to open the patio up as an outdoor dining room. That way we don?t have to waste water on grass, and we get even MORE living space. All of the ground cover on our slope will get ripped out to make room for a natural California coastal/desert landscape. I also need to figure out what to do with that big empty wall space above the loveseat. I?m thinking vintage California flag? Hanging geranium pots? Feel free to share your ideas with me, that big open wall is driving me crazy.

Which leads me back to #morningyard. Objective: I take a photo every morning of something that inspires me from my yard that morning. The challenge is to keep it fresh and unique in the limited space. And then I Instagram the crap out of it while lounging in the rattan rocker. And then I guzzle my green smoothie, and scroll through my feed, and love, just utterly LOVE connecting and being inspired by my friends in that way.

May mornings are dewy and cold and overcast?I know it is time to go inside when the sun starts burning through the clouds.

Cuttlefish Use Ancient Ink Formula

The melanin in modern-day cuttlefish ink is nearly chemically identical to the pigment found in ancient cephalopods' fossilized ink sacs. Sophie Bushwick reports

Tens of millions of years ago, cephalopods were hiding from their enemies in clouds of ink. And it turns out that cuttlefish today produce ink that?s almost identical.

Researchers found fossils of two giant cephalopods that swam the seas more than 160 million years ago. Each one contained a preserved ink sac. Analysis of the sacs revealed that some melanin pigment?the stuff that makes the ink dark?had survived. Plus, the chemical makeup of the melanin was virtually the same as the pigment found in modern-day cuttlefish ink. The work is in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. [Keely Glass et al., "Direct chemical evidence for eumelanin pigment from the Jurassic period"]

It?s rare to find preserved soft tissue in the fossil record. In addition, biomolecules often break down, leaving none of the original organic compounds. Melanin, however, has a sturdy structure that resists this fate. And the methods these researchers used to isolate it from the fossils could help other paleontologists better identify preserved organic molecules and their functions.

The finding also demonstrates that when something works, evolution usually leaves it alone. Because if it ain?t broke, don?t fix it.
