(AP) ? Greek police recovered an ancient statue that was illegally excavated and hidden in a goat pen near Athens, and arrested the goat herder and another man who were allegedly trying to sell the work for ?500,000 ($667,000).

The marble statue of a young woman dates to about 520 B.C. and belongs to the kore type, a police statement said Wednesday. Police photos showed the 1.2-meter (4-foot) work to be largely intact, lacking the left forearm and plinth.

Although dozens of examples of the kore statue and its male equivalent, the kouros, are displayed in Greek and foreign museums, the type is considered very important in the development and understanding of Greek art. New discoveries in good condition are uncommon.

Archaeologists who inspected the find estimated its market value at ?12 million ($16 million), a police official said.

"They told us that this is a unique piece," the official said on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to the speak to the media since the investigation is still ongoing.

Still bearing traces of soil, the statue has the hint of a smile on its lips, elaborately braided hair and an ankle-length gown.

Police said it had been concealed in a goat pen near the village of Fyli, in the foothills of Mount Parnitha on the northwestern fringes of Athens. The 40-year-old goat herder and another Greek man aged 56 were arrested.

Detectives are seeking to determine where the statue was excavated, which could potentially lead archaeologists to a previously unknown 6th century B.C. sanctuary or cemetery.

The archaeological remains of civilizations stretching back thousands of years are spread all over Greece. By law, all antiquities are state property. But pillaging is a highly lucrative business.

The police official said the suspects arrested Tuesday had put out feelers to potential buyers in Greece, and "would have sold it for a relative pittance, ?500,000, given its market value."

In another major success two years ago, police in southern Greece recovered a pair of twin kouros statues, and arrested two suspected looters.

Dozens of illegally exported finds have been returned to Greece over the past few years, including masterpieces from the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Although women continue to lag behind men in pay, the gender wage gap has narrowed considerably since the 1960s. Now a new University of Michigan study is the first to quantify the impact of the pill on women's labor market advances.

The study shows that roughly one-third of women's wage gains through the 1990s are due to the availability of oral contraceptives.

Published online this week by the National Bureau of Economic Research as a working paper, the study was conducted by U-M economist Martha Bailey and colleagues Brad Hershbein at U-M and Amalia Miller at the University of Virginia.

"We found that women who had early access to the pill in the 1960s and 1970s earned 8 percent more on average by the 1980s and 1990s than women without early access," said Bailey, an assistant professor of economics in the U-M College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and a research affiliate at the U-M Institute for Social Research.

Bailey and colleagues analyzed the careers of approximately 4,300 women, born from 1943 to 1954, using the National Longitudinal Survey of Young Women. These women varied in their legal ability to obtain the pill from their doctors between the ages of 18 and 21

"The difficulty of parsing the pill's effect on women's careers relates to the timing of its appearance," Bailey said. "By cause or coincidence, the pill's diffusion coincided with important changes in norms and ideas about women's work and the end of the baby boom."

Bailey and colleagues developed a novel analytic strategy to answer this question. After the U.S. Federal Drug Administration approved the pill in 1960, laws in different states placed different age limits on when women could legally obtain it. As these laws changed in almost every state in the country, largely due to reducing the legal voting age to 18, the inadvertent side-effect was that women could obtain the pill at younger ages. This meant that women no longer had to decide between looking for a mate (and the risk of pregnancy) and investing in their educations and careers. They could do both.

The researchers found that early access laws doubled contraceptive pill use among women between the ages of 18 and 20 precisely the ages affected by access laws but not beyond age 21, when the laws did not bind. Pill use by age 18 was 140 percent higher, and by age 20 was 43 percent higher than national mean use at those ages.

"As the pill provided younger women the expectation of greater control over childbearing, women invested more in their human capital and careers," Bailey said. "Most affected were women with some college, who benefitted from these investments through remarkable wage gains over their lifetimes."

Their analysis shows that nearly two-thirds of these pill-access induced gains in wages were due to increasing labor-market experience; another third came through to greater educational attainment and entry in non-traditionally female occupations.

But even these results may not do justice to the over-arching importance of the pill. "Our results may understate the pill's broader influence because they do not explore the effect of changes in access to the pill beyond age 20 and fail to capture the potentially large social multiplier effects," Bailey said. "The pill's availability likely altered norms and expectations about marriage and childbearing. It also likely affected the decisions of companies to hire and promote women."

SELF IMPROVEMENT AND Achievement | Pokemons And Other ...

Everything that happens to united states happens in purpose. And in some cases, one thing leads to a further. Instead of locking all by yourself up in your cage of fears and also crying over past heartaches, embarrassment and problems, treat them since the teachers and they will become your tools in both personal development and success.

Going watching Patch Adams a my favorite movie, truly. Its one superb film that will help you improve yourself. Hunter patch Adams is really a medical student whom failed to make it through the actual board exams. Just after months of battling in melancholy, depressive disorders and suicidal endeavors he decided to explore for medical attention and under their own accord admitted himself in a psychiatric ward. His weeks of stay in the hospital led him to be able to meeting different kinds of people. Sick people in that matter. He fulfilled a catatonic, a on an emotional level retarded, a schizophrenic and so on. Replacement patch found ways of curing his own ailment and finally realized he has to get back on track. He woke up one morning realizing that after all the failing and pains he ?s got gone through, he still want to become the your physician. He carries together with himself a positive mind-set that brought them self improvement and good results. He didnt only superior himself, but also the life of the people around them and the quality of life. Does he succeed? As you can imagine, he became the most effective damn doctor their country has ever known.

So, when may self improvement become synonymous with success? Where should we start? Take these tips, friends
*Stop thinking and emotion as if youre a failure, given that youre not. How can others accept you if YOU cant love you?

*When you see hunks and units on TV, think more self improvement, not do-it-yourself pitying. Self acceptance isn ?t only about having good slender legs, and also great abs. Focus on inner beauty.

*When people feel so lower and low concerning themselves, help them move up. Dont go down with them. Theyll move you down even further and both of you becomes feeling inferior.

*The environment is a large home for lessons, possibly not mistakes. Dont feel ridiculous and doomed eternally just because you bad on a science quiz. Theres always a the very next time. Make rooms for self improvement.

*Take things piecemeal. You dont expect black sheeps to generally be goody-two-shoes in just a snap associated with a finger. Self improvement is really a one day at a time course of action.

*Self improvement results to essential stability, personality development and dig this kind of . SUCCESS. It comes out of self confidence, self appreciation and self esteem.

* Set meaningful and also achievable goals. Self improvement doesnt turn you to end up being the exact replica for Cameron Diaz or Ralph Fiennes. Them hopes and aims to result to a better and better YOU.

*Little details mean BIG for some other people. Sometimes, all of us dont realize that the little things which we do like a wally on the back, saying hi or hello, greeting another person good day or telling Mister. Smith something like hey, I enjoy your tie! are simple things that mean so much to other people. Anytime were being appreciative concerning beautiful things around us and other people, we become beautiful for them.

*When youre willing to accept change and go through the procedure for self improvement, it doesnt mean that everyone else is. The world is really a place where people of different values and also attitude hang out. At times, even if you think mom and her best friend always like to undertake the same thing together while doing so, she would most likely diminish an invitation for personal development.

We should always remember that theres simply no such thing when over night success. Its always a fantastic feeling to hold to the things that you already have today, realizing that those are found one of the things you at one time wished for. A very good quote says that When the scholar is ready, the educator will appear. We are all in this article to learn our lessons. Our parents, education teachers, friends, friends, officemates, neighbors they are our teachers. When we open the doors for personal development, we increase the chances to head for the road of good results.

A few of the perfect credit score can often be discovered in this article, nevertheless people can also discover ladies shoes in addition to sectional sofa covers if you explore much of our web page

Aspen Times editorial: Whitsitt for Basalt mayor

The two candidates for Basalt's next mayor, whom voters will decide upon April 3, are to be applauded for vying for what can be a thankless job at times.

Glenn Rappaport and Jacque Whitsitt, who both sit on the Town Council, are matched against each other for the post that Leroy Duroux is vacating because of term limits.

Voters also have the luxury of having two very distinct candidates from whom to choose.

The Aspen Times endorses Whitsitt because we feel she reflects this newspaper's longstanding positions on growth, development and affordable housing. Rappaport certainly means well for the future of Basalt. He is opinionated and has built a formidable reputation as an architect and, to some extent, a planner. But we simply disagree with his approach to development in the midvalley.

Whitsitt strikes us as a selfless champion of the greater good of the entire Roaring Fork Valley, as evidenced by her volunteer work on the boards of the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority, Mid-Valley Trails, New Century Transportation and English in Action, among other boards.

And most recently, in November, she was a vocal advocate for the Roaring Fork School District Re-1 mill levy override even though she has never had children.

Whitsitt, unlike Rappaport, also has demonstrated during her time on the Basalt Town Council that she takes a more selective approach to approving development applications. A case in point is her role in the Town Council's passage of an ordinance that allows the construction of 32 free-market homes on an annual basis, an appropriate measure to slow down runaway growth in Basalt. Likewise, she also was an early and vocal proponent of the town's urban-growth boundaries at a time when Basalt definitely needed them.

The two candidates are also distinct in their approach toward affordable housing. While the economy remains in a recovery mode, Whitsitt realizes that when it does bounce back, there will be a need for affordable-housing mitigation by developers. Rappaport, however, argued in June against affordable-housing mitigation on commercial projects.

Again, there's no doubting Rappaport's and Whitsitt's commitment to Basalt. And should Rappaport not claim the mayoral spot, he will return to his council seat because he is in the middle of his term. That's not the case for Whitsitt ? if she loses the mayoral election, she's also off of the Town Council.

Whatever the case, we believe it's Whitsitt's turn to be Basalt's next mayor. Her tireless and selfless work, as well as her ability to listen and be openminded, show she is ready to take the next step.

We encourage voters to select Jacque Whitsitt as the next mayor of Basalt.

Antidepressant proves effective in alleviating osteoarthritis pain

Antidepressants can play a key role in alleviating painful conditions like osteoarthritis and may result in fewer side effects than traditionally prescribed drug regimes, such as anti-inflammatories and opioids, according to a perspective paper published online ahead of print publication by the International Journal of Clinical Practice.

American doctors Leslie Citrome and Amy Weiss-Citrome analysed the latest clinical evidence on duloxetine, a well-established antidepressant that received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval in 2010 for use with chronic musculoskeletal pain, including osteoarthritis.

"It is not uncommon to treat osteoarthritis with a combination of drugs that work in different ways" explains Dr Leslie Citrome, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioural Sciences at New York Medical College, Valhalla, New York, USA. "Our review supports this approach and confirms that antidepressants are not just for depression and can play a key role in relieving this painful condition."

The authors looked at studies exploring the effects of duloxetine being used on its own or in combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These included the two randomised double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trials that formed the basis of FDA approval for duloxetine for the treatment of chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis.

Study results were analysed using number needed to treat (NNT) and number needed to harm (NNH). These quantify how many patients need to be treated with one intervention versus another before encountering one additional patient who experiences a desired outcome (NNT) or undesired disadvantage, such as a side-effect (NNH). A smaller number indicates greater advantages for NNT and greater disadvantages for NNH.

"Applying these simple methods to often complex research gives us a real indication of whether a drug will benefit or harm our patients, which is what we as clinicians are most interested in" explains Dr Citrome.

When duloxetine was compared with a placebo tablet containing no active ingredients, using data from the two FDA approval studies, the NNT was six. This means that six patients would need to be treated with duloxetine instead of receiving the placebo before encountering one additional patient experiencing an improvement in pain using a composite measure that brings together a number of indicators of efficacy. Such a low NNT makes a compelling case for this treatment approach.

The authors say that this finding, over 13 weeks, compared favourably with other studies of NSAIDs - the NNT was five for etodolac after four weeks and four for tenoxicam after eight weeks.

When the side effects of the various drugs were taken into account, this showed that when duloxetine was used on its own for 13 weeks it provided a number of advantages over NSAIDs, which can lead to gastrointestinal bleeding, and opiates such as morphine, which can cause constipation.

The most common side effects of duloxetine - nausea, fatigue and constipation - were small when compared to the placebo, resulting in NNHs of 16, 17 and 19 respectively. This means, for example, that 16 patients would need to be treated with duloxetine instead of receiving the placebo before encountering one additional patient experiencing nausea.

The studies used to gain FDA approval also showed that pain reduction using duloxetine on its own was not dependent on an improvement in depressive symptoms.

"Although the use of duloxetine as a monotherapy for pain has been approved by the regulatory agencies, it is quite common for patients to receive a combination of drugs and NSAIDs are the most frequently prescribed drugs for the pain associated with osteoarthritis" says co-author Dr Amy Weiss-Citrome, a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

For that reason the authors also examined the findings of a recent study that showed the potential synergy of duloxetine and NSAIDs.

The study, a ten-week double-blind trial of 524 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, found that those who took a combination of duloxetine and NSAIDs reported greater pain reductions than the control group who took a NSAID with a placebo.

The NNT for the outcome of substantial improvement in pain with combination treatment versus NSAIDs alone was six, underlining the benefits of this approach.

"We believe that our analysis of these studies demonstrate that clinicians managing patients suffering from osteoarthritis should also consider prescribing adjunctive antidepressants that can effectively impact on central pain pathways" concludes Dr Leslie Citrome.
