''Let's kill all the lawyers'' - William Shakespeare

?In 2011, finance, insurance, and law were the three primarily white-collar professions that managed to shed workers, even as the rest of the economy trudged forward through a slow recovery.?

So the parasites that make it harder for work to occur are being laid off? Huh, that's an unexpected way for the economy to be able to improve.

I hope that the host notices its newfound strength and acts accordingly.

To bad that graph didn't have snivel servants listed!Until that number starts dropping, and fast and furious, the States and us are still hooped.

A bit of a misquote on Shakespeare. In context, the line is given as advice on the means to create a state of tyranny. In other words, Shakespeare is saying lawyers are essential to the recognition of basic political and human rights. Of course, no one actually reads Shakespeare these days, except, perhaps, unemployed lawyers.

No, Shakespeare didn't say that. A character in one of his plays said that, one of a group who were plotting to take over the government. They suggested killing all the lawyers because they knew the law.
Literature can be difficult, but don't get discouraged.

Good to see the correction on the Shakespeare "saying" and its context. I'm not a lawyer, but that particular misquote always irks me.

Lawyers are the only profession I know of whose sole purpose it to make work for themselves. In the litigation rich, high crime world of the USofA, they'll likely never run out of work. Lawyers, like vultures and other scavengers, do well in hard times.

Conservative governments like Canada's will continue to reduce the government workforce, reduce debt and improve economic viability. They do well in good times when people have jobs and disposable income.

Socialist Liberal governments like Quebec and a lot of the USofA tend to grow bigger in hard times because they appeal to the poverty class of entitlement junkies. Once entrenched they're very hard to dislodge since the average unintelligent voter will always vote for the candidate who promises them them most benefits with the least increase in taxes on them.

North of 60 - don't forget HR departments, and any branch of government.

Be very afraid. Lwyer on the loose! Lawywers with idle hands seek other non value added professions like in government or bureaucracy. Anything to avoid real work.

don't forget HR departments, and any branch of government.

I never thought of bureaucracy as a profession, like lawyers, doctors, engineers, scientists... but I see your point about their self serving nature.

Pournelle's Iron Law of Bureaucracy

In any bureaucracy, the people devoted to the benefit of the bureaucracy itself always get in control and those dedicated to the goals the bureaucracy is supposed to accomplish have less and less influence, and sometimes are eliminated entirely.

Come on, I would like someone to try & think of a litigation lawyer they know that is "honest"...They do not exist. They live to lie and cheat on billing hours. They are the bottom of the barrel. They disgust me. Do you really want to know how I feel? I left this guy an email last month just to let him know I will be out of the country and gave him a number where i can be reached. He charged me $50 to read the email and $50 to reply. That is the honest truth...Dirt bags the whole lot of them....of course he is now no longer employed by me....

Antidepressants While Pregnant Linked to Slight Risk of Lung Problem in Babies (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Jan. 12 (HealthDay News) -- Women who use antidepressants called selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac and Celexa during pregnancy run a slight risk of having an infant with high blood pressure in the lungs, a new Swedish study finds.

The condition, known as persistent pulmonary hypertension, can lead to shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Although rare, severe disease is associated with heart failure, the investigators noted.

"Infants born to women treated with SSRIs in late pregnancy had a twofold increased risk [of] their infants having persistent pulmonary hypertension," said lead researcher Dr. Helle Kieler, head of the Centre for Pharmacoepidemiology at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm.

"The increased risk seemed to be a class effect of SSRIs, as risks for the specific SSRIs were of similar magnitude," she added.

Women taking SSRIs should be informed about the increased risk, but they should also be told that persistent pulmonary hypertension is a rare disease that affects fewer than two of 1,000 newborns, Kieler said.

"If possible, non-medical treatment for depression during pregnancy should be considered," she said. "For women where treatment with an SSRI is the only or best option, the choice of substance is of less importance."

Dr. Gideon Koren, director of the Motherisk Program at The Hospital for Sick Children at the University of Toronto and author of an accompanying journal editorial, said this finding does not prove that SSRIs cause persistent pulmonary hypertension.

"It is important that, before we scare pregnant women not to treat their depression in pregnancy, we ensure that the science overcomes its methodological limitations," he said.

"Most notably, the authors have chosen SSRIs as the potential cause for persistent pulmonary hypertension, while their results show that untreated depression can also do it," Koren said.

Based on these data, "we cannot yet conclude that use of SSRIs causes persistent pulmonary hypertension in some babies," he said.

The report was published in the Jan. 12 online issue of the BMJ.

For the study, Kieler's team collected data on more than 1 million births from 1996 and 2007 in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden.

Among the mothers, nearly 11,000 took SSRIs during late pregnancy and about 17,000 took them during early pregnancy. Most of these women were older and smoked, researchers reported.

In addition, more than 54,000 mothers had been previously diagnosed with mental problems, but were not taking any medication.

Among the women taking SSRIs, Kieler's group looked at the use of fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), citalopram (Celexa), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft) and escitalopram (Lexapro).

Fluvoxamine was rarely used and none of the children with persistent pulmonary hypertension were exposed to it, the researchers noted.

Of the nearly 11,000 mothers who used an SSRI in late pregnancy, 33 babies (0.2 percent) were born with persistent pulmonary hypertension, the researchers found.

Of the more than 17,000 women who used SSRIs in early pregnancy, 32 babies (less than 0.2 percent) suffered persistent pulmonary hypertension, they added.

Among the 54,000 mothers who had previously been diagnosed with a mental problem but who did not take SSRIs during their pregnancy, 114 infants were born with persistent pulmonary hypertension, Kieler's group found.

Other factors such as Cesarean delivery or low birth weight were not associated with persistent pulmonary hypertension, they noted.

Another expert, Dr. Ilene Sosenko, a professor of pediatrics and neonatology at the University of Miami School of Medicine, said this study won't change clinical practice.

"The risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension is very low and even though there is a higher risk with SSRIs, the risk remains extremely low," she said. "From a clinical standpoint, the risk is not increased to the point where it would change the pattern of the way doctors are managing their pregnant women," she said.

Managing the depression is probably more important than worrying about the risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension, Sosenko said.

"Depression can impact on how the mother eats or whether she takes other drugs or whether she gets her prenatal care," she said. "Although there is a very small increased risk of persistent pulmonary hypertension, the benefit of remaining on SSRI medication is important."

Gov. Quinn Signs Expanded Earned Income Tax Credit Bill (ContributorNetwork)

According to the Associated Press, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn signed a new bill into law Tuesday that expands the state's earned-income tax credit. The tax credit aims to help working and poor families by increasing it from 5 percent of the federal credit to 7.5 percent next year and 10 percent the next year.

The credit would mean about $100 a year for each family. Here are some facts about the bill and the other efforts Illinois has taken to help working families.

* In 2010, more than 2.5 million people in Illinois benefited from the earned income tax credit and the new increase will mean an addition $105 million for working families in the state, according to the State of Illinois.

* A study conducted by the Brookings Institution in 2006 found that for every dollar families save through the credit turns into $1.58 of local economic activity.

* WBEZ reported the earned income tax credit will impact about 935,000 households in Illinois and a family of five earning less than $48,000 will now qualify under the new expanded credit.

* The credit was also part of a bigger tax break package that also included offering additional breaks to CME Group and Sears in attempt to keep both companies operating in the state.

* The Illinois House of Representatives approved the tax credit in mid-December after separating the break for families from the break for companies, according to ABC 7 Local.

* Despite the House approving it, many Republicans opposed the tax relief saying the $100 million cost to the state was too high in light of the current economic situation.

* The Illinois Department of Human Services added its partnership with the Center for Economic Progress' Tax Counseling Project helps provide working families with free tax preparation assistance.

* The services are free to families with incomes less than $50,000 and individuals with incomes less than $25,000 with nine locations in Chicago and 17 other locations throughout Illinois.

* Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the American Opportunity Tax Credit was recently renewed and allows Illinois families to receive a credit of up to $2,500 per student, according to Sen. Dick Durbin's Office.

* This college tuition credit specifically helps working and middle-class families by providing $1 back on their taxes for every $1 spent on tuition for the first $2,000 spent and then 25 percent of the next $2,000 up to $2,500.

Pa. families asking EPA chief to send water (AP)

PHILADELPHIA ? Residents from a small northeastern Pennsylvania town at the center of the political fight over natural gas drilling are taking their complaints directly to the head of the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

About 50 protesters are picketing outside an unrelated forum in Philadelphia that EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson is scheduled to attend. They want answers about the agency's reversal of a decision to provide water to residents of Dimock (DIH'-muhk), Susquehanna County, who claim natural gas drilling has contaminated their wells.

A handful of Dimock residents joined environmental advocates in chanting and waving signs outside the building Jackson is visiting.

Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. stopped delivering water to Dimock residents in November after state environmental officials found the company had satisfied the terms of a 2010 consent agreement. The company has denied causing the contamination.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Residents of a small northeastern Pennsylvania town at the center of the political battle over natural gas drilling are planning to confront the head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

A group of residents-turned-activists from Dimock say they intend to seek out Lisa Jackson, who's scheduled to attend an unrelated forum Friday in Philadelphia, about her agency's reversal last week, when it promised to deliver them water then reneged a day later.

A state investigation found that 18 wells in the village were contaminated after natural gas drilling began there in 2008.

About a dozen residents have sued Cabot Oil & Gas Corp., claiming the energy company caused the contamination when it extracted natural gas using a process known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, a method that has spurred a boom in natural gas drilling in several states while raising concerns about the toll on the environment and public health.

Cabot denies contaminating the wells, saying most wells in the region were laced with methane long before the arrival of drilling. Nevertheless, the company trucked in fresh water for the residents to use for bathing and washing clothes and dishes. The deliveries stopped Nov. 30 after state regulators determined that Cabot had fulfilled its obligations to the residents under a 2010 consent agreement. The residents say their aquifer is still contaminated.

The federal government has wavered about its role, initially saying the water posed no health risk, then that it merited more study, then in the space of 24 hours last week promising to deliver water and reneging.

Pennsylvania's environmental chief, who works for a pro-drilling governor, has criticized his federal counterparts, saying the EPA has only a "rudimentary" understanding of the contamination.

Snoop Dogg Busted in Texas - Medical Marijuana Stash Discovered by Drug Sniffing Dog

The rapper was issued with a citation for misdemeanor drug possession and released.

The rapper was issued with a citation for misdemeanor drug possession and released.

Snoop Dogg has reportedly been arrested for cannabis possession after his medical marijuana stash on his tour bus was discovered by a drug sniffing dog.

The 'Sweat' rapper - who has been jailed on numerous occasions over drug and firearm possession charges in the past - had his tour bus stopped by law enforcement officers at a border patrol checkpoint in the small Texan town of Sierra Blanca over the weekend, TMZ.com reports.

During a standard inspection of the vehicle, police were said to be alerted by a sniffer dog to a red prescription bottle containing several joints inside, believed to amount to half an ounce of the drug.

Law enforcement sources claim Snoop admitted the cannabis was his and while he has a prescription for the substance in his home state of California, there is a zero tolerance policy for the drug in Texas.

The rapper was issued with a citation for misdemeanor drug possession and released, but if he is convicted on the charge, he could face up to 180 days in jail.

Snoop has previously admitted he is honest with his three children about his troubled past, as he would rather tell them himself than let them learn from other places.

He said: "My kids know who I am, I explained it to them, the things I've done, the time I spent in jail, the reason why I went to jail, when I sold drugs.

"I told them everything so they could know from me first, as opposed to going on the internet or hearing about it from somebody else. They can make up their own minds and say, 'Well my dad told me this, I know how my dad gets down so I believe him."

Will Eugene have a parade for Rose Bowl champion Ducks?

EUGENE, Ore. - The Eugene City Council plans to make a proclamation in honor of the Rose Bowl champion Oregon Duck football team at a meeting Monday night.

What remains to be seen is whether the City and University will celebrate the Duck victory with a parade.

The two institutions collaborated on the "Celebrating Champions" parade after the Ducks lost the BCS National Championship game to Auburn a year ago.

Mayor Kitty Piercy, fielding questions from constituents, said on her Facebook page that the City wants to throw a parade but that the UO is hesitant to take part due to a recent change in leadership. The State Board of Higher Education ousted President Richard Lariviere. An interim president started Monday.

"We have been in discussion with the U of O regarding a parade or another type of event," Piercy posted on Facebook. "It appears that given the recent change in leadership, the search for a new president and the big effort that was put into the Rose Bowl activities, they are reluctant to have a parade. I'll keep trying to find a path to a community celebration.

"Stay tuned," she said. "Students have been out of town and Chip (Kelly) has been out recruiting."

Julie Brown from UO Media Relations told KVAL News it's not an unwillingness to have a parad, but more of a scheduling conflict. She saids this is a very busy time for coaches and players heading back to classes.

This is a developing story. Watch KVAL 13 TV News and KVAL.com for updates

New Hampshire GOP Activists Unmask Invisible Primary (VIDEO)

CONCORD, N.H. -- In the run-up to the New Hampshire primary, local GOP activists have made choices that parallel those of the state's ordinary Republican primary voters: Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney enjoys the most support, but just as many Republicans are leaning toward other candidates.

On Sunday morning, The Huffington Post and Patch gathered a dozen of the participants in our ongoing Power Outsiders surveys in New Hampshire to watch the Republican candidates debate.

Watch the video above to see our in-person interviews with GOP activists who have been regular participants in the Power Outsiders surveys, in which they discuss their reasons for supporting the candidates that they do.

The Power Outsiders project is an ongoing effort to reach out to local Republican activists, party officials and officeholders to observe the so-called "invisible primary" for endorsements, campaign cash and local activist support that occurs in the year before the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary.

Scholars who have studied past campaigns find that party "actors" at all levels -- including officeholders, party officials and local activists -- are not only a critical leading indicator of who will become the presidential nominee, but also often a better predictor of the ultimate nominee than early polls.

The Power Outsider project has involved a weekly interview of local Republican party actors in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida.
