PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Mexico (AP) ? Authorities in northern Mexico say police have found five severed human heads at several points around the city of Torreon accompanied by threatening message referring to drug gangs.

Coahuila state prosecutors spokesman Fernando Olivas says the male heads were tucked inside bags along with handwritten notes attached. He hasn't revealed the exact messages.

Olivas says the slain men's bodies have not yet been located. The heads were found late Friday and early Saturday.

Authorities say the Zetas and the Sinaloa drug cartels are fighting each other over control of smuggling routes in the state of Coahuila.

Multi-year prediction of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation at 26.5 ?N possible

ScienceDaily (Jan. 6, 2012) ? Climate scientists with Dr. Daniela Matei and Prof. Dr. Jochem Marotzke from the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) and Prof. Dr. Johanna Baehr from Hamburg University's Cluster of Excellence ?CliSAP" have now shown for the first time that the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation at 26.5 ?N can be skillfully predicted for up to four years.

Their results have been recently published in Science.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) -- colloquially known as "Gulf Stream" -- transports warm surface waters into the high latitudes, where they cool, sink and return southwards at depth as cold North Atlantic Deep Water. Variations in AMOC can significantly affect the northward ocean heat transport and therefore the European and North Atlantic climate. Through its influence on sea surface temperature (SST), AMOC can further impact climate phenomena such as Sahel droughts or the frequency of Atlantic hurricanes. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be able to predict these climate variations on a time horizon from years to decades. Multi-year climate predictions have so far been limited to predicting surface temperature variations and hurricane frequency, but have not addressed the prediction of any dynamical quantity such as the AMOC.

In the near term (inter-annual to decadal timescales), climate variations are influenced by both anthropogenic forcing and natural variability. This is why the near-term climate prediction models must be started ("initialized") from the present state of the ocean.

The skill of any prediction system is assessed retrospectively, by performing the so-called "hindcast" or "retrospective forecast" and comparing them with observations. In the present study, ensemble hindcasts have been performed starting in January of each year between 2004 and 2007. The AMOC strength in the hindcasts closely follows the observations for up to four years.

The results of the coupled atmosphere-ocean-model ECHAM5/MPI-OM of the MPI-M have been evaluated against the only continuous available observations of the AMOC over the period April 2004 to March 2009. The AMOC observations were and will be performed in the RAPID-MOC project.

The close agreement between the hindcasts and the observations has motivated Dr. Daniela Matei and her colleagues to also produce AMOC forecasts (more details on the method in the original publication). An ensemble of nine forecasts spanning 10 years has been constructed for each of the Januaries from 2008 to 2011. For all start years the ensemble mean forecasts until 2014 indicate a generally stable AMOC. However, the forecast initialized in January 2010 shows a pronounced minimum in March 2010. This brief minimum was induced by an extremely negative NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) during the winter 2009/2010.

According to the findings of the working group, the AMOC predictive skill arises predominantly from the basin-wide upper-mid-ocean geostrophic transport. The results of the study demonstrate that the skill of climate prediction arises not only from the large ocean thermal inertia, but also from the long timescales of internal ocean dynamics.

The work was supported by the BMBF ?Nordatlantik II" project and the Cluster of Excellence "CliSAP" (Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction) of the University of Hamburg.

Community Colleges Underused

It cost several thousand dollars to get a college education. Community colleges go a long way to reduce this cost. There are underused public high schools that could be made available to college students to work toward a degree. Evening hours and summer vacations these building sit empty. Classes could be conducted at these available times.

Qualified retired teachers and others with credentials could teach thousands of individuals at these high schools at a fraction of the cost of other higher education facilities. In most cases, the schools are close to these students, reducing travel time and cost. Empty parking lots are available for easy access. With new inventions such as the Kindle, textbooks could be made available at a fraction of the cost. Teaching videos of a variety of subjects could also be used in conjunction with classroom attendance.

These schools can be a stepping stone toward the attendance at a regular college if the credits would be accepted. We need plans to pull all of this together and make it happen. I see many other ways to help lowers are taxes if we would just think outside the box.

Artist Takashi Murakami Decries 'Cool Japan' Program

Modern artist denounces ad agencies for "simply trying to turn a profit"

The contemporary artist Takashi Murakami (Superflat Monogram, Kaikai & Kiki) criticized the "Cool Japan" campaign on his Twitter account on Friday. "Cool Japan" is a program supported by the Japanese government and various companies that promotes modern Japanese culture such as anime and manga abroad. Murakami stated that he has "absolutely no connection to 'Cool Japan.'"

The program revolves on the premise that Japan's strength in business and international affairs lies in anime, manga, films, fashion, and other fields of Japanese arts and entertainment content. The artist spoke out against advertising agencies' involvement with the initiative because he believes that they exploit the work of Japanese artists to earn a profit. He also said, "I can't understand why artists get involved with the gimmicks of ad agencies who are simply trying to turn a profit with 'Cool Japan.'" Murakami called for advertising agencies and administrators to stop inviting him to events and interviews related to the initiative.

Murakami's own art, influenced by anime, manga, and otaku culture, has appeared as part of commercial campaigns in the past. The artist has worked with Luis Vuitton to design a print for its handbag lines, and with rapper Kanye West to design an album cover and animate a music video.

Time magazine named Murakami as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2008. In 2009, Murakami created a music video titled "Akihabara Majokko Princess," directed by Terminator Salvation director McG and starring actress Kirsten Dunst. The pop artist held a controversial art exhibit in France's Chateau of Versailles in 2010 and created the "Six Hearts Princess" anime for the show. Murakami also exhibited his art in Madrid, Spain in 2010 and 2011 and in London this past summer.

Researchers at Tokyo Polytechnic University conducted a survey of Japan's public opinion on "Cool Japan" in 2010. Only 29.0% of the respondents had heard of the term, and only 4.6% said that they were familiar with what the term means. When asked about which fields they want to introduce to the world as "Cool Japan," "animation" and "manga" were the top choices.
