Report: Apple holding N.Y. press event in Jan.

By Rosa Golijan

It wouldn't feel like the start of a new year without a fresh batch of Apple gossip. So to kick things off, let's talk about a recent report which claims that Apple's holding a media-related event in January?? in New York City.

Word of this event first?came to us via AllThingsD's Kara Swisher???who got wind of the whole thing thanks to "sources close to the situation." Swisher explains that?the event is to be held in New York at the end of the month, and will not focus on the next generation of the iPad.

Instead, Swisher suggests, that "leaves some kind of advertising or even publishing announcement, which might be the case, since Apple SVP of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue is reportedly involved."

TechCrunch's Alexia Tsotsis says that line of reasoning is right on the money, according to her own source:

[T]he event will not involve any hardware at all and instead will focus on publishing and eBooks (sold through Apple?s iBooks platform) rather than iAds. Attendance will also be more publishing industry-oriented than consumer-focused.

The event will unveil improvements to the iBooks platform, according to the same source, and is not ?major.?

So what might such an announcement mean, in the grand scheme of things? According to GeekWire's Todd Bishop, it boils down to three little words: Watch out, Amazon.

Guest Post: London Commemorates Gaza, 3 years after Operation Cast Lead

Palestine Solidarity supporters occupied Kensington High Street yesterday, demonstrating outside the Israeli Embassy, as part of a worldwide day of action commemorating 3 years since the launch of ?Operation Cast Lead?: Israel?s 3 week terror ?offensive? upon Gaza which began on 27th December 2008, murdering over 1,400 Palestinians, a majority of which were Civilians.

Humanitarians chanted in unison, calling for an end to the siege on Gaza, freedom for Gaza, Jerusalem and Palestine, waving their flags with their placards held high. All amidst an exclusive shopping district, on one of London?s busiest day; the Bank Holiday Christmas sales. A group of Israeli apologists gathered on the opposite side of the street; both groups of protestors were penned in by railings patrolled by police.

A video ?London Commemorates GAZA, 3 years after Operation Cast Lead? features scenes of the London demonstration including speeches by Hugh Lanning, PSC chair; Zaher al-Beerawi of the Palestine Forum in Britain and Ismail Patel from Friends of Al- Aqsa.

Any terror attack is devastating and ?Operation Cast Lead? especially so. Gaza had been under an illegal Israeli siege, for 19 months prior to Operation Cast Lead. This siege impedes the movement of people and the flow of goods like food, medicine, fuel and money which places Gaza?s residents under a humanitarian crisis. Israel controls Gaza?s air space, land and sea borders, rendering Gaza an open air prison. The siege is indiscriminate and inflicts collective punishment on the civilian population; this is illegal under Humanitarian Law. Human Rights Watch reported that prior to operation cast lead ?about 80% of the Gaza Strip's population (1.2 million) relied on food aid, a significant proportion was malnourished and more than half was food-insecure, or living on less than $2.6 USD per day?.

As a result of the siege, hospitals can provide only basic care due to lack of equipment, material & resources. The infrastructure of Gaza was at a critical point with water, sewage and electricity services severely undermined. Gaza was already suffering an overwhelming humanitarian crisis brought upon it by the illegal Israeli siege and lacked the resources and infrastructure to deal with any further humanitarian crisis.Operation Cast Lead murdered 1,400 Palestinians which included many children. Much of the wounded and sick were trapped in their homes, with no access to medical care; and corpses left amongst the rubble due to Israel restricting the movement of ambulances in the area.

Human Rights Watch reported ?The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reportedly blocked the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) from accessing badly wounded and dead civilians for several days. On January 8, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which 750,000 Gazan's have long depended on for food aid, decided to suspend aid deliveries in Gaza after Israeli strikes killed two of its drivers.?

During this offensive, Israel used white phosphorous munitions, which is an incendiary devise- due to its ferocious burning & smoke producing capabilities. It causes injury by burning deep into flesh, on inhalation and ingestion. Extensive exposure by burning & ingestion results in death. Phosphorous sticks to the skin and will continue to burn until deprived of oxygen; it also carries a greater risk of death than from other form of burns, as the body can absorb phosphorous which causes damage to organs.

Ayma al Najar, a 13 year old boy from Khoza (South Gaza) lay in his hospital bed suffering with severe white phosphorous burns. Courageously, in the circumstances he spoke to a camera crew describing the attack on his family, including his sister, grandfather and cousin. They were all at home on the evening of Israel?s attack.

?She was playing with her mobile phone and suddenly a rocket came towards her and burnt her. A piece of shrapnel hit her face and tore her face all the way down to the bone. And from here to here, her stomach was all bones, there was nothing left of her. She didn?t cry at all, not a tear drop fell from her eye, she didn?t even scream, they brought her to the hospital to the operating theatre where she died.' His grandfather died, they buried him twice, his upper half first day, following day they found his legs and buried them?'My grandfather was sitting outside when a rocket hit and cut him in half?my cousin was sitting near the door another bomb hit him and burnt his eyes.?

Israel is an occupying power, exercising effective day-to-day control over key aspects of Gazan life. Under international law, an occupying power has a duty to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the civilian population under its occupation.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights have published the names of those who died under Operation Cast Lead and yesterday announced that to mark this anniversary and highlight the continuing injustice, they will release a series of narratives, documenting the experiences of victims in the three years since the offensive. The series will be accompanied by a factsheet providing an overview of the flaws inherent in the Israeli justice system and the criminal complaints submitted to the Israeli authorities on behalf of victims of Operation Cast Lead.

The siege on Gaza continues to date. In September 2011, an Independent UN Panel reported to the UN Human Rights Council concluding that the blockade on Gaza subjects Gazans to collective punishment in "flagrant contravention of international human rights and humanitarian law".

I was at the London Palestine demonstration in Trafalgar square in January 2009 in a protest of solidarity against Operation Cast Lead. I felt an overwhelming sense of sorrow, helplessness and injustice. Sarah Colborne, PSC Director of Campaigns addressed the rally yesterday providing ?We have a rally in Conway Hall at 7pm please be there, it?s very important because whilst we remember, we are also saying never again and we have to make that message loud and clear not just to the Israeli embassy but to our own Government that stood back and allowed Israel to commit that massacre, so please be there on the 18th January 2012.?

Salam, Peace be upon you.

Spinal Manipulation, Home Exercise May Ease Neck Pain (HealthDay)

MONDAY, Jan. 2 (HealthDay News) -- Spinal manipulation and home exercise are more effective at relieving neck pain in the long term than medications, according to new research.

People undergoing spinal manipulation therapy for neck pain also reported greater satisfaction than people receiving medication or doing home exercises.

"We found that there are some viable treatment options for neck pain," said Gert Bronfort, vice president of research at the Wolfe-Harris Center for Clinical Studies at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, Minn.

"What we don't really know yet is how to individualize these treatments for each particular patient. All are probably still viable treatment options, but what we don't know is what each particular patient will need," Bronfort said, adding that it's possible a combination of treatments might be helpful, too.

Results of the study are published in the Jan. 3 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. Funding for the study was provided by the U.S. National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

Neck pain is an extremely common problem. About three-quarters of adults report having neck pain at some point in their lives, according to background information in the study. Neck pain is responsible for millions of health care visits each year, and it can have a negative impact on quality of life.

Spinal manipulation is one type of treatment that's offered for neck pain, and it can be administered by chiropractors, physical therapists, osteopaths and other health care providers, according to the study.

But, there isn't much evidence for treating neck pain with spinal manipulation. There also isn't a great deal of information on how effective medications or home exercise programs are for treating neck pain, the researchers noted.

Bronfort and colleagues thought that spinal manipulation might prove to be more effective than medications or home exercise therapy. To test their hypothesis, they recruited 272 people between the ages of 18 and 65 who had neck pain. Their neck pain had no known cause, such as a trauma or pinched nerve, and the patients been experiencing the pain for between two and 12 weeks when the study began.

The study volunteers were randomly selected for one of three treatment groups. One group received spinal manipulations over a 12-week period. Each individual was allowed to choose the number of spinal manipulations they felt they needed.

The second group received medications, both over the counter and prescription, depending on their needs. First-line medications included nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications or acetaminophen (Tylenol). If people didn't get relief from these drugs, narcotic pain medications and muscle relaxants were offered.

The third group was assigned two one-hour sessions of home exercise. The goal of the home-exercise program was to improve movement in the neck area. Participants were instructed to do the exercises six to eight times per day.

At the 12th week, 82 percent of people receiving spinal manipulation reported at least a 50 percent reduction in pain, compared with 69 percent of those on medication and 77 percent doing home exercises. Also at week 12, of people receiving spinal manipulation, 32 percent reported feeling a 100 percent reduction in pain, compared with 13 percent on medications and 30 percent doing home exercises.

At one year, 27 percent of those receiving spinal manipulation said they felt a 100 percent reduction in pain versus 17 percent of those on medications and 37 percent of those doing home exercises.

"For me, as an ER doctor, this study offers an interesting perspective," said Dr. Robert Glatter, an attending physician in emergency medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. "It's a small study, but it found that home exercises and spinal manipulation were effective. So, should we be referring to physical therapists, osteopaths or chiropractors from the ER?"

"This study shows that basically neck pain will get better on its own," said Dr. Victor Khabie, chief of the departments of surgery and sports medicine at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, N.Y. "It would've been good if they had a no-treatment group, too," he added.

"Everyone heals differently. There are different pathways to healing, and whether you feel you're better off with chiropractic, home exercises or medications, this study shows that all three are basically just as effective. Whatever your pathway to healing, in about six to eight weeks, you should start to feel better," said Khabie.

He also noted that it's important for anyone receiving spinal manipulation to know that there are rare, but serious risks that can occur with neck manipulations.

All three experts said anyone experiencing neck pain needs to have it evaluated to make sure there isn't a serious or correctable cause of the pain. This is especially true if you've been in a car accident, or if you have any neurological symptoms, such as repeatedly dropping things, or if you have pain radiating down your arm.

Closing Overseas Military Bases Would Save America Millions (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama is again asking for permission to spend more taxpayer money and send America deeper into debt. Obama plans to request a debt ceiling increase of $1.2 trillion dollars, according to the Washington Post.

The supercommittee failed as many predicted and little has been done to reign in irresponsible governmental spending in the U.S. If approved, the nation's debt ceiling will increase to $16.4 trillion. Americans might once again be treated to hours and hours of rhetorical debate about raising the debt ceiling by members of both parties.

Liberals just cannot comprehend the fact entitlement programs have grown too costly and foster the enabling of millions of capable adults. Those who have always worked but have fallen on hard times will utilize the aid in the manner intended as a temporary means to provide food and shelter. Unfortunately a growing number of Americans look at public assistance not as transitional aid but as a lifelong career. Conservatives must hold the line on fiscal responsibility and do the job voters intended when sending them to Washington.

Republican presidential candidates Newt Gingrich and Ron Paul feel that closing overseas military bases to save money and better utilize troops inside America's borders is an issue worthy of discussion, according to Fox News. The U.S. operates approximately 700 full-scale foreign bases in 103 countries.

Closing unnecessary overseas military bases will not only save money, but provide trained personnel to protect our nation's borders. The Department of Defense publishes a report detailing the number of bases, military real estate holdings and personnel on an annual basis.

According to the 2011 report, the vast majority of overseas military bases exist in Germany, with a total of 194 military sites. There are 108 military sites in Japan and 82 in South Korea. A total of 4,825 overseas military barracks, air stations, research facilities and storage sites were reported in the 2011 included defense report. There are 1,818 Army, 958 Navy, 1,765 Air Force and 152 Marine facilities in foreign nations.

American safety would be far better served by boots on the ground at our borders than at a military facility in Jamaica or Bulgaria. Although some bases are necessary, the Cold War years are far behind us and mini-colonies on foreign soil are no longer needed to ensure the protection of the United States.

Tortured Afghan girl, Sahar Gul, to go to India for treatment (VIDEO)

Sahar Gul, a 15-year-old Afghan girl who was brutally tortured for months by her mother-in-law, will be sent to India for medical treatment, the Associated Press reported.

Gul, a child bride in Afghanistan's northern Baghlan province, was locked in a basement and tortured by her in laws in an attempt to force her into prostitution, police said. She was starved, burned with hot irons, and her fingernails and clumps of hair were ripped out.

A video given to the BBC shows the extent of Gul's injuries.?Police told the BBC that she also had chunks of flesh cut out with pliers.

Gul's mother-in-law and sister-in-law have been arrested, Afghan officials told the AP. Police are still searching for her husband.

Gul was freed last week, and is being treated at a Kabul hospital. Afghan officials said she would be sent to India for treatment, but there were no further details of the treatment she would receive, the AP said.

The BBC reported that Gul had been married off to a 30-year-old man about seven months ago, when she was 14 years old.

An uncle called the police when her parents hadn't seen her for several months.

Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai has called for an investigation into Gul's torture, and said that those responsible will be punished, CNN reported.

HBT: Tigers willing to deal star prospect for pitching

Detroit is serious about making a big addition.

From ESPN?s Buster Olney comes word that the Tigers have ?made it known to other teams? that they are willing to trade top pitching prospect Jacob Tuner this offseason ?in a deal for the right pitcher.?

Turner, a 20-year-old right-hander, was the ninth overall selection in the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft and has posted impressive numbers at every level of the Tigers? farm system. In 2010, he had a 3.28 ERA and 102/23 K/BB ratio in 115 1/3 innings between Low-A West Michigan and High-A Lakeland. Then in 2011, he registered a 3.44 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 110/35 K/BB ratio in 131 innings between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo.

The Tigers were in talks with the A?s for Gio Gonzalez before the left-hander was traded to the Nationals, and have now been linked to Cubs right-hander Matt Garza. They should also have some other options.

Dave Krieger: Have NFL defenses figured out Tim Tebow?

I was on my way from the Mile High press box to the field late in Sunday's game when two passing fans shouted a greeting of sorts:

"Hey, you ever heard of Brady Quinn?"

"I've heard the name," I shouted back.

"Well, tell 'em to give him a chance!"

Fans are bound to be frustrated after watching their team score a total of three points and lose its third game in a row, but let's be honest:

If most any second-year NFL quarterback completed six of 22 passes for 60 yards, an interception and a passer rating of 20.6 in a game his coach had designated a playoff game, some sizeable portion of the fan base would be calling for the backup.

This is not about whether Tim Tebow is a good guy or a good role model. He's clearly both. This is about whether his performance over the last two weeks - 19-for-51 for 245 yards, a touchdown, four interceptions and two fumbles - suggests that NFL defenses have developed a template for shutting him down.

Quinn was hustling to escape the locker room - and perhaps to avoid such questions - when I caught up with him. What were his thoughts, I wondered, as he watched the two quarterbacks with whom he began the season struggling to get anything done offensively?

"I wish I could have been out there playing against someone, you know?" he said. "Everyone else got to be out there playing."

He was moving pretty fast and he'd arrived at the players' exit.

"Do you think this offense can get it back together?" I asked.

A guy in a security jacket blocked my path.

Quinn looked back as he exited. "I hope so," he said. "Hope so."

Meanwhile, in his corner of the locker room, rookie defensive back Chris Harris was confused. Sure, his team had just lost, but with the Raiders' loss minutes later, it had also just clinched the AFC West and a playoff berth in his first NFL season.

"We don't get no hat or nothing?" he asked no one in particular. "We don't get no shirt?"

I

don't know whether the Broncos would have issued AFC West championship hats or shirts had they finished the season with a win, but it was the strangest division-clinching locker room I've seen, caught between disappointment at another loss and joy at the puzzling result.

The Broncos finished 8-8, tied for first with Oakland and San Diego, winning the division by virtue of the third tie-breaker, their record against common opponents. Tebow had a lot to do with the team's resurrection from a 1-4 start behind Kyle Orton, whose single touchdown drive Sunday for the Chiefs was enough to beat his former team.

But over the past four weeks, opposing defenses have increasingly buttoned down the unconventional offense the Broncos built around Tebow. His improvement as a passer stalled, and the last two weeks his performance has regressed.

These ups and downs are not particularly unusual for a young quarterback, by the way. After throwing three interceptions against the Bills last week, he seemed hesitant Sunday to throw the ball into small windows. His more devoted followers will no doubt blame the play-calling, but he threw the ball 22 times and completed only six. That's poor, by any measure.

Granted, it should have been seven. A heartbroken Matt Willis sat in front of his locker afterward and quietly took full responsibility for dropping a Tebow throw on the Broncos' final possession that might have ignited one more bit of last-minute magic.

But it shouldn't always take last-minute magic, exciting as it is. A competent NFL quarterback needs to execute before magic is required, at least sometimes.

This is not to say that Tebow can't get there. It is just to say that right now, based on the last few weeks, defenses seem to have figured out a way to beat him: Bump his receivers, knock them off their routes and stay close enough that he's not willing to risk throwing into the narrow windows that are there.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming to town for the playoffs. They've got a pretty fair defense. If the Broncos can't pass the ball any better against them than they did against the Chiefs on Sunday, they might want to take a couple of fans' advice and have another passer warming up.

Because the botton line has nothing to do with whether you like Tebow or you don't: In the NFL, if you can't score, you can't win.
