MoreFrames Animation: world-class animation studio brings Erie to life

Erie Reader Animation Cover

For a little while, I was an exclusive member of the Erie Pa. Rob & Nino club.

Not the actual club, mind you. I didn?t sign up for an email newsletter or customized texts, but I did get to sit on a couch with the MoreFrames Animation crew and watch their latest project, the music video for Swedish dance-pop duo Rob & Nino?s latest single ?I Just Wanna,? before anyone else.

It was like I was privy to a wonderful secret, at least as much of a secret as one can be part of when millions of people have experienced it, albeit unknowingly. Before having run into a couple of members of the MoreFrames crew at the Erie Art Museum a few months before, I had no idea who they were or what they did, yet people from across the world have seen the fruits of their labor.

Just who are these low-profile animation rock stars? You can call them artists, dreamers, or even fools, if you?re inclined to think in such a pessimistic way, but they?re just regular people like you and me. They just happen to have their own animation studio in Erie.

It?s not often that you see disembodied 8-bit heads floating on a screen affixed above a stage, but that?s what was in front of me. Below the pixilated heads there?s a rating for strength, speed, and intelligence, with special abilities ranging from ?Gangam Style? to ?Donuts.? Eventually, four people matching the blocky faces took their places in the chairs situated beneath. From left to right, Jordan Held, Gus Trauth, Adam Calfee, and Ron Levellie, the brains behind the animated brawn of MoreFrames, sat in front of a packed crowd.

We were at the Erie Art Museum, where I had first met some of the members a few months before. The crowd was there for the kick-off party for FILM, a weekly film series celebrating the social and cultural experience of cinema, with the draw-daddies being the special guests. The room was abuzz with the voices of trendily-dressed guests with drinks in hand, all packed into the theater area. My once-exclusive membership to the animated wonders of MoreFrames, including my special sneak peak at the Rob & Nino music video, had been extended to about a hundred new people when a half-hour featurette of their work was shown on the main screen right before the quartet took the stage.

The group hadn?t made too many efforts to make their collective presence known. The kick-off party made for a good introduction, as the crowd was wowed by the various music videos, motion comics, bumpers, and other impressive snippets that the crew has pumped out of their humble studio on Peach Street across from the King?s Rook.

In fact, for a rather anonymous company located in Erie, MoreFrames has been bringing in widely recognizable clients, such as the Halo video game franchise (yes, the massively popular one with Master Chief) and popular metal band Lamb of God. It?s even more impressive when you take the fact that MoreFrames is only a few years old.

While the company was made official around the end of 2009, the beginning of MoreFrames starts with a school project near and dear to the hearts of the animators ? ?Moonboy.?

Adam?s senior project at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania brought the team together for the first time. While Adam was in his fourth year, Ron was a year ahead of him, Jordan and Gus the grade below. In addition to the future MoreFrames crew, several students from the animation department came together for the project, helping to fuel Adam?s visions of a career after Edinboro.

?I always had the idea to start something after graduation rather than try to get a job,? Adam said. ?I was always trying to gather everybody that I thought would be good to do that and tried to push on ?Hey, after graduation we?re going to start a studio, yeah, yeah???

While the idea of a new animation studio appealed to many, the plan was left by the wayside after Adam moved to Mississippi, where his parents had relocated while he was in college, to live with them after graduating from Edinboro. ?Moonboy,? however, started picking up steam.

?It got featured, like ?video of the day? and then ?staff pick of the day? [on Vimeo], so that got a crap-ton of views,? Jordan said. ?Then we got into the First Annual Vimeo Festival with Moonboy in the animated shorts category. We went to New York, and it was great.?

Eventually, potential clients began to take notice of the young animators.

?Six months after being down [in Mississippi],? because of Moonboy?s popularity and this little contest I did on a website, this Aniboom contest, we started just getting contacted, like ?Hey, you want to do a music video for us?? which is kind of our whole career so far, which is people just contacting us with ?Hey, you want to do a music video for us???

One of the people contacting the group was a Brooklyn, N.Y. hardcore rapper by the name of Ill Bill, who has been a big fan of the crew, contracting them to make eight music videos. With the influx of projects coming in, the group needed to move from working together over Skype while Adam was in Mississippi and the others remained in Pennsylvania to a central location.

With Gus and Jordan living together in Cambridge Springs and the affordable cost of living in Erie, Adam made the voyage back to The Flagship City, where MoreFrames started becoming a reality.

?MoreFrames was kind of in the air for a while, and it really came out with ?War is My Destiny,? the second music video we did for Ill Bill,? Gus said. ?We even came up, at the Empty Keg [in Edinboro], with the name MoreFrames.?

Soon, the jobs started getting bigger and better. A representative from 343 Industries, a video game development company, contacted the group about having MoreFrames animate a motion comic for the Halo franchise, an offer that the crew eagerly accepted. They spent over a year developing that project, which can be found on the XBox network. Through their work with Ill Bill, the group was contacted by the metal band Lamb of God to create a music video for their song ?Ghost Walking.?

With all the projects coming out of MoreFrames, one would almost expect to see numerous designers and animators walking in and out of their confines, but the four main players ? Adam, Gus, Jordan, and Ron ? make up the majority of the company?s output. Sure, a few interns and the occasional freelancer will swing through and help, but the quartet handles the large workload mostly by themselves.

However, even though MoreFrames is a small animation studio located outside a major city, the combination of talent, drive, and the World Wide Web make for a busy company.

?The Internet has just changed things so much,? said Steve Carpenter, a computer animation professor at Edinboro, who taught all of the MoreFrames crew.? ?You can put things up on YouTube or wherever, so they?re just taking advantage of the situation, really. They are able to compete, price-wise, with anybody.

?They are still a young company, but I see huge potential. I know that Erie is constantly trying to get more businesses to come to town, and I think that having an entertainment component of the whole business makeup adds a different flavor to things.?

Kingston DataTraveler Workspace (32GB)

The Kingston DataTraveler Workspace (32GB) looks like a high-capacity USB 3.0 flash drive, but it's more than mere storage. It offers Windows To Go, a portable, bootable version of Windows 8 that lets you use an IT certified operating system on one or many systems, giving employees the freedom to work on the PC of their choice, or to move from one PC to another and back again, without missing a beat. Plus, it's all safe and secure, letting your people work wherever they happen to be, on whatever PC they happen to have access to. It's your go-to solution for taking Windows on the road without the bulk of a laptop, making it our Editors' Choice for Windows To Go devices.

Design and Features
The DataTraveler Workspace looks like any other high-capacity flash drive, with a USB 3.0 connector and a chunky, rugged design similar to the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2 (32GB) , featuring the same total capacity and a variation on the same chunky plastic and metal construction. Larger capacities are also available, with 64GB versions available for purchase ($170) and 128GB versions available for custom order (Pricing varies by order).

Like the Kingston DataTraveler Ultimate 3.0 Generation 2, the DataTraveler Workspace has a fairly secure cap to protect the USB plug from being damaged or dirtied, and it clips to the back end of the drive during use. There is also a lanyard loop for the drive, letting you attach it to a lanyard or keychain. Measuring 0.65 by 0.9 by 2.9 inches (HWD), you do run the risk of blocking off adjacent USB ports when it's plugged in, but this eight-ounce drive is exponentially more pocketable than any ultrabook or tablet.

Unlike other flash drives, the DataTraveler Workspace isn't pure storage, but a portable operating system, and reads as a fixed NTFS drive. In practice, it's a small solid-state drive (SSD), complete with an integrated Sandforce SSD Controller and support for TRIM and S.M.A.R.T commands. It's also secure, offering support for BitLocker encryption and Trusted Boot anti-malware and boot protection software. We might have liked to see some hardware based access protection as well, a la the LOK-IT Secure Flash Drive or the Aegis Secure Key , but the security available should still be sufficient.

There is some storage space available for installing programs and saving files?17.5GB on our 32GB review unit?but for real storage, you'll want to pack along another flash drive or portable hard drive. Designed for corporate use, the drive came with a 64-bit version of Windows 8 Enterprise, which can then be used on any machine running Windows 7 or Windows 8. An added touch to make the removable drive a bit more resilient?if accidentally removed, you have 60 seconds to plug the drive back in without losing any data or disrupting your work session. In the longer term, Kingston also protects the drive with a two-year warranty.

It's worth noting, however, that if a full operating system isn't necessary, other drives, like the Victorinox Swiss Army Slim Flight offer private zero-footprint Web browsing, and plenty of drives offer password protection and a secure partitions for keeping private data private, including both the Victorinox and the Editors' Choice SanDisk Extreme 3.0 (64GB) . This is a more specific tool, designed for administrators that need to deploy a fully bootable corporate workspace without the necessity of a corporate issued PC.

The drive itself uses USB 3.0 in order to offer the best possible performance while also being broadly compatible. When connected via USB 3.0, the drive offers top sequential speeds of 250 MBps (for both read and write). It's slower when connected via USB 2.0, but it will still work, meaning that you can plug it into most PCs in use today and fire up your portable OS wherever you happen to be. The only issue to be wary of is heat. When in use, our review unit ran hot, reaching temperatures of 99-degrees Fahrenheit (as measured with a Fluke IR thermometer).

Using the drive is fairly straightforward. The drive plugs into the USB port of the PC?most current PCs will do (more on that below)?and it's a simple matter of booting from the drive, which usually involves only a keystroke or two during the boot sequence. Instead of accessing the PC's regular operating system from the hard drive, it fires up the copy of Windows To Go stored on the drive. Once the drive begins booting, you'll see the Windows 8 logo come up on the loading screen. Log in with a Windows ID, and you'll be greeted by the Windows 8 Start Screen. The initial boot to a host PC may be slow as drivers are loaded, but afterwards, Windows To Go should be up and running in 6 to 8 seconds.

Once you've booted into Windows To Go, you'll be utilizing the same hardware you would have when booting up the target PC normally, with the exception of the hard drive. You'll get full-powered processing and graphics without accessing the host PC's files, or it accessing yours?all of the host PC's drives and the files on them will be inaccessible, and won't even show up in Explorer?but you will have access to the storage on the DataTraveler Workspace, as well as any external storage (like a second flash drive or portable hard drive) that you might connect. As a result, you're safe from any viruses or malware on the host system, and can rest easy knowing that your own files are safe from prying eyes. Microsoft also recommends using Windows To Go in conjunction with either a VPN connection or DirectAccess, and storing larger files and resources on the corporate network.

During use, you'll be able to install and run programs as you normally would onto the Kingston drive. For instance, you can pre-install Microsoft Office onto the remaining space on the DataTraveler WorkSpace, and use that to launch your Word, Excel, or Powerpoint files and work on them. Because it reads as a fixed drive, rather than a removeable drive, you don't have to install a special bootable version of the programs.

A couple of caveats: You won't be able to access the Windows Store or any of the Windows 8 Apps available through it. Also, the size of your primary drive is limited to the remaining capacity of the flash drive. Aside from the differences in storage, the user experience is exactly like using Windows 8 on any other PC, though you may notice the occasional lag when connected via USB 2.0. Once you're done, simply unplug the drive, and it's like you were never there.

In order to run the portable version of Windows 8, the PC used will need to meet the minimum specifications required of any Windows 8 machine, namely a processor with a clock speed of 1GHz or more; at least 2GB of RAM for 64-bit systems (or 1GB for 32-bit), and DirectX 9-capable graphics. Most?but not all?PCs running Windows 7 will meet these requirements. Linux machines that meet these hardware requirements, and that are capable of booting from the USB drive, will also work, but Macs are not supported.

If you need the flexibility of Windows To Go, the Kingston DataTraveler Workspace is a simple and straightforward option. It slips in your pocket and goes anywhere, running on most current PCs, and offers a level of security that half-measures won't match. If all you want is secure data storage or Web browsing, consider the Editors' Choice SanDisk Extreme 3.0 (64GB) or the Victorinox Swiss Army Slim Flight. Other manufacturers have also received Microsoft's Windows To Go certification, and you can expect to see similar devices from Imation and Western Digital reviewed in the near future. But for an OS that's good to go anywhere, the Kingston Data Traveler Workspace is an excellent option, and our Editors' Choice for Windows To Go devices.

Delta updates app with a privacy policy; California is safe again

Delta app

Delta Airlines has updated its Android app, bringing $2,500,000,000 worth of new features. All in the form of a privacy policy.

It's still the same app as before, letting you check in to your flights, grab a mobile boarding pass, or even check your SkyMiles balance. If you are a frequent flier on Delta, it's probably a very useful download.

So what is this upgrade all about, and what does it have to do with billions of dollars? Good question, with an easy answer. Seems that the state of California slapped Delta with a lawsuit because the app had no clear privacy policy attached. Delta had 30 days to comply, or be faced with fines that could total up to $2.5 billion (with a b). Rather than make a large donation to California's economy, Delta updated their app today. Quick work, and the addition of the privacy policy is easy to get to -- simply tap Traveling with Us, then tap Privacy Policy.

It's good to see a privacy policy for any app, especially one that collects your credit card info by design. It's also good on some level that the state of California looks out for their citizens, keeping them safe from those who would steal and abuse their private data.

But I can't shake the feeling that threatening a $2.5 billion fine ($2,500 per download)is the best way to go about it. Anyhoo, if you're using the Delta app go grab the update, and if you're not using it but think you should be, download it from Google Play.

Alicia Keys raises $2.9M at gala, honors Winfrey

NEW YORK (AP) ? During the auction portion of Alicia Keys' Black Ball Redux, one man was ready to jump his bid from $100,000 to $250,000 for a trip to South Africa ? if Keys would join him and his friends.

"I'll go for a little more," Keys said Thursday night at the Apollo Theater, where her charity's annual gala was held.

The man ? pharmaceutical billionaire Stewart Rahr ? didn't raise his bid, but he later pledged $1 million to Keep a Child Alive, helping the R&B singer raise more than $2.9 million.

Keys' charity assists those affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India. Thursday's event was originally planned for Nov. 1, but was canceled due to Superstorm Sandy.

"There are places in the world where Keep a Child Alive serves where they have a Hurricane Sandy every day," Keys said in an interview on the red carpet. "They don't have electricity, they don't have heat ... and that made me more invigorated to make sure this Black Ball happened."

Keys honored Oprah Winfrey at the event for the entrepreneur's philanthropic efforts, including her school, The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa, which launched in 2007.

"It's a universal truth, Oprah makes change happen," Keys said.

Winfrey said she was honored to receive an award from Keys, and that it confirms she's "moving in the right direction."

"You try to keep a child alive and I try to educate them as best as I can," Winfrey said onstage.

Before that, a video played onscreen detailing the launch of Winfrey's school and how the mogul struggled in her early years, riding on a bus with maids from the inner city to the suburbs to attend a better high school.

"When I look at Africans girls I see myself," 58-year-old Winfrey said. "I continue to work for them to have the same opportunities that I have. "

Beninese singer Ang?lique Kidjo was also honored and she joined Keys onstage for some upbeat, drum-filled numbers.

Bonnie Raitt also performed, as she and Keys sang a duet version of her slow groove "I Just Can't Make You Love Me." Keys said it was "one of my dreams to sing" with Raitt.

Jennifer Hudson and Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes also hit the stage, where Whoopi Goldberg worked as the night's emcee.

"I read '50 Shades of Grey' so I stay away from paddles," Goldberg said when the auction began.

APNewsBreak: Dhaka factory lost fire certification

FILE - In this Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012 file photo, Bangladeshi firefighters battle a fire at a garment factory in the Savar neighborhood in Dhaka, Bangladesh, late. A Dhaka fire official said the Tazreen factory's fire safety certification had expired on June 30, and fire officials refused to renew it because the building did not have the proper safety arrangements. The factory did not have any fire exits for its 1,400 workers, many of whom became trapped by the blaze. Investigators said the death toll would have been far lower if there had been even a single emergency exit. (AP Photo/Hasan Raza)

(AP) ? The factory where 112 garment workers died in a fire should have been shut down months ago. The fire department refused to renew the certification it needed to operate, a top fire official told The Associated Press. And its owner told AP that just three of the factory's eight floors were legal. He was building a ninth.

Government officials knew of the problems, but the factory just kept running.

The Capital Development Authority could have fined Tazreen Fashions Ltd. or even pushed for the demolition of illegally built portions of the building, said an agency official, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media. But it chose to do nothing, rather than confront one of Bangladesh's most powerful industries, he said.

"I must say we have our weaknesses. We could not do that," he said. "Not only Tazreen. There are hundreds more buildings. That's the truth."

Bangladesh's $20 billion-a-year garment industry, which accounts for 80 percent of Bangladesh's total export earnings, goes virtually unchallenged by the government, said Kalpona Akter, executive director of the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity, a labor rights group.

"These factories should be shut down, but who will do that?" she said. "Any good government inspector who wants to act tough against such rogue factories would be removed from office. Who will take that risk?"

Fire officials did challenge the factory, though they appeared reluctant to go too far.

When the factory's fire safety certification expired June 30, Dhaka's fire authorities refused to renew it, a fire official told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

A factory must be certified to operate, but the department usually gives factory owners some time to upgrade conditions. If they fail to do so, the department can file a court case to get it closed down. But it rarely does, and did not in Tazreen's case.

"These factories should be closed, but it is not an easy task," the fire official said. "We need to follow a protracted legal battle. Always there is pressure because the owners are influential. They can manage everything."

The Nov. 24 fire tore through the ground floor of the behemoth white, concrete factory, which fills most of a block in the Dhaka suburb of Savar. About 1,400 employees were cutting fabric and sewing clothes for Wal-Mart, Disney and other Western brands.

Dipa Akter had no idea she was in any danger during the three years she worked at the Tazreen factory.

"We never thought such a big fire could happen at Tazreen. We thought there would be no problem if there was a fire. There are three stairways ... we never thought our colleagues would die this way," she said.

Now, the factory stands gutted, its cavernous floors littered with burned clothes, yarn, machinery and furniture. Glass from windows broken by desperate workers who tried to jump to safety is scattered along with black ash on the floors and staircases.

Though the factory had three staircases, it had no specially designed emergency exits. Fire extinguishers in the building either didn't work or workers didn't know how to use them, survivors said.

The fire official declined to provide specifics about what violations the department had uncovered in the months before the fire.

"I can't explain more because the case is very sensitive and this is under investigation," the official said.

The chairman of the Capital Development Authority, Nurul Huda, did not return calls seeking comment.

Tazreen's owner, Delwar Hossain, said the government granted him authorization to construct a three-story factory. Nonetheless, he added five more floors and was constructing a ninth when the blaze broke out, he said late Thursday.

The construction is in direct violation of a law that requires advance written approval of factory construction and expansion.

When asked why he went ahead with the expansion anyway, he responded: "My mental condition is not good. I am under pressure. Please don't ask me anything else."

Hossain is a former accounts manager at a garment factory who started his own company, Tuba Textiles Mills Ltd., in 2004 and now has a dozen factories of his own.

Other factory owners hold parliamentary posts and other prestigious positions. In one sign of the industry's power, the government has dispatched a special police force just to maintain order in the factories.

The risky conditions at the Tazreen plant were known not only to government officials, but to major U.S. retailers whose products were made there.

Wal-Mart audited Tazreen in 2011, giving it an "orange" or high-risk rating. Months later it did a second audit, and early this year the factory was no longer authorized to produce merchandise for the retail giant. However, an AP reporter who visited the factory last week found Wal-Mart brands were still being made there. The company said a supplier ? who has since been fired ? had moved Wal-Mart production there without its knowledge.

Akter, the rights activist, estimates that more than half the nation's more than 4,000 garment factories have safety arrangements only on paper.

Factory owners "are very powerful, or backed by powerful associations and people," Akter said. She added that many inspectors are bribed to ignore violations.

In the two weeks since the blaze, the fire department has inspected 232 factories in the industrial area where Tazreen was located. It found that more than one-quarter of them ? 64 ? lacked fire safety licenses or safety measures such as fire extinguishers, water reservoirs and workers trained to fight a fire, said Dhaka fire chief M. Abdus Salam.

Those 64 factories will be shut down if they fail to address the issues within a month, Salam said.

In the meantime, they continue producing clothes.

How to Say Google in Different Languages

Google, the word not the company, has become such a common word for anyone who uses a computer (other than the yahoos who still use Yahoo, I guess) that it's surprising to learn that other languages have a different word for it. Like Italians say Googlare. Or that the Portugese say Googlar. It gets weirder. More »
