US (CA): California farmers report labor shortages

The survey, conducted by the Calfornia Farm Bureau Federation, found that 61 percent of respondents reported worker shortages. At 71 percent, a larger percentage of farmers who grow labor-intensive crops reported experiencing worker shortages. The survey's findings also showed that farmers resorted to a variety of measures to deal with labor shortages, including offering higher wages, adjusting harvesting and pruning times, relying more on mechanization, and, in some cases, planting fewer acres or cutting the harvest short.

California Farm Bureau President, Paul Wenger, said in a CFBF press release that the survey's findings raise issues that must be addressed by farmers and non-farmers alike; especially considering that farmers rely on a largely immigrant workforce.

?Through this survey, California farmers have given us a glimpse into what may happen if current trends continue,? he said. ?Without the creation of a secure, effective program that allows people from foreign countries to work legally in the United States to harvest crops, we could see continuing or worsening problems, especially for small or midsized farms.?

The results of the survey are contained in a CFBF report titled ?Walking the Tightrope: California Farmers Struggle with Employee Shortages.? It can be found at cfbf.com.

Netflix CEO Reed Hasting Faces Possible SEC Charges Over Facebook Post

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is under investigation by the?Securities and Exchange Commission because of a Facebook post the CEO made in July.

On his personal Facebook page Hastings announced that Netflix had surpassed one billion hours of streaming video in a single month, the first time Netflix has reached that milestone in its short lived history. SEC officials now claim that disclosing that information only to his Facebook followers may have been a violation of fair disclosure laws.

The SEC could choose to go after Hastings and Netflix in civil court.

The Facebook post was not a secret, Hastings? Facebook account post was seen by more than 200,000 followers. Even with a post seen by hundreds of thousands of followers the SEC believes it may still be ?selective disclosure? of material information.

Netflix officials were quick to point out that the company hinted at the one billion milestone before it was actually posted to Reed Hastings? Facebook page. The video streaming service also claims that revealing such numbers is not ?material? to investors who prefer to know about subscriber numbers both on the instant video streaming and DVD/Blu-ray rental sides.

Netflix says it is ?optimistic that this can be cleared up quickly through the SEC?s review process.?

This isn?t the first time Netflix officials have come under fire for their business practices, many investors were angered when company officials sold millions of Netflix shares before the company lost a large percentage of its users during price increases for its services.

Teen: Boys want an Easy-Bake Oven, too

Stephan Savoia / AP

Hasbro's Easy-Bake Oven comes in two colors: purple and pink.

By Michelle R. Smith, Associated Press

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --?Four-year-old Gavyn Boscio loves to cook and asked for an Easy-Bake Oven for Christmas. But when his big sister went to buy one, she discovered to her disappointment that it comes only in girly pink and purple, with girls ? and only girls ? on the box and in the commercials.?

So the eighth-grader from Garfield, N.J., started an online petition asking Pawtucket, R.I.-based Hasbro to make the toy ovens in gender-neutral colors and feature boys on the package.?

By Friday, 13-year-old McKenna Pope's petition had garnered more than 30,000 signatures in a little more than a week.

And celebrity chef Bobby Flay, who owned an Easy-Bake Oven as a boy, is among those weighing in on her side.

In a video McKenna made to accompany her petition on Change.org, Gavyn whips up a batch of cookies and tells his sister he wants a dinosaur and an Easy-Bake Oven for Christmas. When she asks him why there are no boys in the commercial for Easy-Bake Ovens, he explains: "Because only girls play with it."

Julio Cortez / AP

McKenna Pope, 13, right, and her brother Gavyn Boscio, 4, pose Dec. 6 for a photo at their home in Garfield, N.J. Pope started a petition demanding the toy company Hasbro make its Easy-Bake Oven more boy friendly.

"Obviously, the way they're marketing this product is influencing what he thinks and the way that he acts," McKenna said in an interview. She said her little brother would probably be OK playing with a purple-and-pink oven by himself but would be too embarrassed to use it in front of his friends.

A spokesman for Hasbro did not return calls for comment.

In a letter McKenna received on Monday, a Hasbro representative told her the company has featured boys on the packaging over the years and said a brother and sister were finalists for the Easy-Bake "Baker of the Year" award in 2009. Hasbro also pointed to Flay as an example of a chef who traced his career to an early experience with the Easy-Bake.

McKenna found the response disappointing.

"All they really told me is that boys play with their products. I already know boys do play with your products, so why are you only marketing them to girls?" she said. "I don't want them to make a boys' Easy-Bake Oven and girls' Easy-Bake Oven. I want them to make an Easy-Bake Oven for kids."

The debate over whether toy companies are reinforcing gender stereotypes ? pinks and princesses for girls, guns and gross things for boys ? seems to flare every year, particularly at Christmas, and has involved such things as LEGOS, toy microscopes and Barbie dolls. Now, it has extended to another one of the most beloved baby boomer toys, introduced in the 1960s.

Flay, 47, said he asked for an Easy-Bake for Christmas when he was about 5. He remembers it as a "putrid green" and recalls baking cakes with his mother from mixes. (The Easy-Bake Oven back then used a light bulb as a heating element; now it operates more like a real oven.) At the time, he said, the stereotype was that only women cooked, but a lot has changed since then.

"I cannot tell you how many young boys are my fans. And they want to grow up, and they want to cook," the Food Network star said.

Jim Silver, a toy expert and editor-in-chief of Timetoplaymag.com, played with an Easy-Bake himself when as a kid and said boys still play with it, just as girls play with Hot Wheels cars. He said Hasbro is simply marketing to the audience most likely to buy the oven and there's nothing wrong with that.

About seven years ago, Hasbro had a cooking product aimed at boys, the Queasy Bake Cookerator, which included recipes for gross-sounding treats such as Dip n' Drool Dog Bones and Mud n' Crud Cake. "Sales failed miserably," Silver said.

Flay said he is not surprised it failed because Hasbro was trying to appeal to boys in a stereotypical way. Instead, he urged the toymaker to think about widening the market for the Easy-Bake.

"Why not actually create something that everybody knows the name, but also it comes in different colors so that boys, girls, doesn't matter, they can pick what color they want and it will make them a little more comfortable to buy it?" he said.

In the meantime, he said, Gavyn's family should buy him an Easy-Bake Oven anyway.

"Absolutely. If that's what he wants, why not get it for him? I mean, who cares what color it is?" he said.

How to Improve Your Memory | Desert Star Weekly

By Art Kunkin, Mr. Life Extension

This week I purchased from Amazon Books a $2.99 Kindle Book titled ?Memory: Simple, Easy and Fun Ways to Improve Memory.? Within seconds of clicking the purchase button on my computer screen, Amazon downloaded the book authored by John Parker to my computer and I was able to immediately access it with my free Kindle reader. I really love the Internet. Here I was after midnight in rural Joshua Tree, many miles from any bookstore, and I was able to make an inexpensive purchase using my PayPal account of a specific book that I felt I needed right then and there.

I was particularly interested in the third chapter of this book because five minutes earlier I had read on Amazon?s web site that this chapter contained self-talk affirmations to rapidly improve one?s memory. In recent Living Longer columns I have been advocating that changing one?s self-talk is a rapid and very effective method of getting organized, of developing good habits and benefiting from great life extension. And here was a memory book saying that in order to have success in anything, including supercharging one?s memory, a person must cultivate strong beliefs and self-talk compatible with success. You have to change your beliefs from ?I have a poor memory? to ?I have an excellent memory,? from ?I can?t remember anything,? to ?I have the capacity to remember everything.?

To help you get started in improving your memory, author John Parker provides a list of 10 affirmations. These self-talk statements cover various aspects of memory so that a well rounded improvement will result.

1) I have an excellent memory. 2) I can remember anything I choose. 3) Every day, in every way, my memory is improving. 4) I remember names, faces, places, facts, dates and events easily and effortlessly. 5) I recall information quickly. 6) My brain holds information that is easy retrieved. 7) My memory provides me with all the information I need. 8) I immediately remember everything that is important to me. 9) Answers come to me when I need them. 10) I have a strong memory of past, present, and future events.

Before affirming the above statements, it helps to get into a relaxed state where there is no resistance of the mind to the new thoughts. Close your eyes and recall a time when you were relaxed? perhaps stretched out on the beach or relaxing in the mountains. Then take a deep breath, hold it for 10 seconds and exhale slowly while saying to yourself ?relax.? Inhale again, hold it for 10 seconds and exhale slowly, again while saying ?relax.? Do this three more times. When relaxed, repeat each of the above statements 10 times. Say them as if they were true right here and right now.

The relaxation helps you get deep into your inner consciousness and change your beliefs at a core level. It helps to do this exercise at least twice a day for 30 days. The best time to do this is once in the morning just as you are getting up and once in the evening before falling asleep.

In the beginning, you may resist doing affirmations. As you self-talk, pessimistic feelings in the background may come up like ?This is silly? or ?This won?t work.?

Realize that when you have a long standing, strongly held idea, it is difficult for your mind to accept a new way of thinking. So it will resist thoughts not in line with what it already believes. A relaxed state helps eliminates some of this struggle. After a while, the statements will transform into new and positive beliefs ? beliefs conducive to having a strong and healthy memory.

You may find that there are specific areas of memory where you have more problems than in others. To deal with this, you can focus your affirmations. For example, if you have trouble remembering answers during exams, simply create a group of 8 to 12 positive sentences that focus on your performing well during exams. If you regularly forget where you put things, create statements that help you better recall where you place items. Say to yourself, ?I have a good memory. I remember everything I need to recall. The information I need is coming to me.?

Even if you don?t buy into affirmations or understand why self-talk works, still use them daily. Affirmations don?t require your understanding in order for them to work. Simply smile to yourself and self-talk, ?Yes, I?ve had problems with memory but things have changed for the better.?

Doctoral student unravels 'tin whisker' mystery

ScienceDaily (Dec. 4, 2012) ? Americans love their electronics, and millions will undoubtedly receive everything from flat-screen TVs and e-readers to video games and coffee makers this holiday season. Over time, even the best of these devices inexplicably stop working. Often it's not worth the time and money to have them repaired, but the nagging question of "why" still lingers long after they're thrown in the trash.

Yong Sun, a mechanical engineering doctoral student at the University of South Carolina's College of Engineering and Computing, has solved part of the puzzle.

Little-known culprits, tiny killers that leave no evidence the human eye can detect, of this electronic destruction are microscopic strands known as "whiskers." These hair-like fibers of metal grow out of the tin used as solder and coating on many electronic circuits. The presence of these whiskers can cause short-circuits since they act as bridges to conduct electricity to closely-spaced parts, a problem expected to become more prevalent as devices are designed smaller and smaller.

The whisker phenomena have been known within scientific circles since the 1940s, but just how these tin whiskers form and grow was largely a mystery. He used a process called digital image correlation to track the deformation of the surfaces and was able to prove the growth of whiskers are caused by high-strain gradient built up inside the device.

Sun's findings were published in the Scripta Materialia, a materials science journal. This fall he won the Acta Student Award, one of only six to receive the honor.

"This shows that our research in material science is reaching an international audience," Sun said. "It is nice to be recognized for our work."

The importance of that work goes well beyond extending the operating life of consumer electronics. NASA has verified multiple commercial satellite failures it attributes to tin whiskers. Missile systems, nuclear power stations and heart pacemakers also have fallen victim to tin whiskers over the past several decades and they are also considered a suspect in reported brake failures in Toyota vehicles.

While manufactures had been able to control some whiskers by mixing small amounts of lead into tin solder, the 2006 European Union ban on lead in most electronic equipment had ignited a debate among scientists about whether whiskers would remain a perpetual problem. Some observers even predict that it's only a matter of time before miniature devices built after the ban start failing en masse.

Xiaodong Li, a professor in USC's Department of Mechanical Engineering who served as an adviser on the research, said Yong's work likely will prompt manufacturer to design lead-free products that diffuse stress.

"This (research) is a very big deal. As we move toward nano-scale devices, this is a problem that needs to be solved," Li said.

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) ? A Wyoming community college instructor killed in a grisly classroom murder-suicide was hailed as a hero Saturday, with police saying he gave his students time to flee by distracting and fighting off his son after the younger man barged into his computer science class and shot him in the head with a high-powered bow and arrow.

The arrow severely wounded James Krumm, 56, but he managed to wrestle with son Christopher Krumm, 25, of Vernon, Conn., on Friday while the handful of students in the Casper College classroom escaped.

Christopher Krumm had just stabbed to death his father's live-in girlfriend at the couple's home two miles away.

When police arrived at the classroom after the bow-and-arrow attack, they found Christopher Krumm bleeding from self-inflicted knife wounds and taking his last breaths.

James Krumm was dead, Casper Police Chief Chris Walsh said.

"I can tell you the courage that was demonstrated by Mr. Krumm was absolutely without equal," he said, adding that the instructor's actions could offer some measure of comfort to those affected by the killings.

Authorities believe "around six" students were in the classroom when Christopher Krumm entered, Casper police spokesman Justin Smith said. No students were hurt.

Walsh said police still were trying to figure out what motivated Christopher Krumm to attack his father and girlfriend, 42-year-old Heidi Arnold, a math instructor at the college. Arnold died of multiple stab wounds.

After shooting his father with the arrow, Christopher Krumm stabbed himself, then fatally stabbed his father in the chest in a struggle in the classroom, Walsh said.

Police began getting reports about the attack on Arnold soon after they responded by the dozen to the campus attack. Authorities locked down the campus for two hours while they scoured the grounds for any other attackers. They were reassured that Christopher Krumm acted alone.

He had smuggled the compound bow ? a type much more powerful and effective for hunting than a simple, wooden bow ? onto campus beneath a blanket, Walsh said.

He said Christopher Krumm also had two knives with him, and the knife used was "very large."

Arnold's body was found in the gutter of her street, and evidence suggested much of the attack occurred outside the home, Walsh said.

Neighbor Heather Meier said she came home from work Friday afternoon after picking up her 7-year-old daughter from school, and the two saw Arnold's body still lying in the street.

"As soon as we got home, we just shut the curtains," she said Saturday. "You know, tried to just watch some TV, have some snacks, mind our own business."

Across the street from her home, crime tape cordoned off Krumm and Arnold's faded blue and yellow house and part of the street. Meier, who has lived in the neighborhood for two years, said she met Arnold and James Krumm only once a few months ago and described them as quiet and very private.

Casper College instructor Kevin McDermott said Arnold and James Krumm were well-liked on campus.

"I knew these people pretty well, so it's hurting me. ... It's breaking my heart," said McDermott, who teachers algebra and computer networking at the school. "They were really good, kind-hearted people. People like Jim and Heidi are what make Casper College such a great college."

McDermott described James Krumm as a "real kind and gentle-mannered guy" who was well-respected by his students.

"Computer science majors took most of their classes from Jim. He was their adviser, and he had a big impact on them," he said.

McDermott added Arnold was a great teacher who "taught the tough stuff" and maintained a sunny disposition ? "a person who always had a smile on her face."

Chris Unruh, a student in one of Arnold's pre-calculus classes this fall, said she was a kind instructor who was excited about recently getting two dogs.

"She cared about her students," said Unruh, 18. "She wanted all of them to succeed."

Investigators said Christopher Krumm had recently driven to Casper from Connecticut and had been staying at a local hotel. He had no significant history of encounters with police.

Authorities were uncertain what went awry in his relationship with his father.

"It's difficult to say. I don't think it was very close," Walsh said.

In Vernon, Conn., police Sgt. Timothy O'Connor said officers executed a search warrant at Christopher Krumm's last known address Friday to help authorities in Casper. He didn't know what investigators were looking for or may have found at the home.

"Whatever was recovered will be turned over to Wyoming because it is an active investigation," O'Connor said.

Christopher Krumm's previous addresses include one in the western Massachusetts city of Springfield and others in the Colorado cities of Golden, Fort Collins and Lakewood.

Casper, population 56,000, is about 250 miles northwest of Denver and Wyoming's second-largest city after the state capital, Cheyenne. Wyomingites refer to Casper as the "Oil City" because it is a hub of the state's oil industry.

Casper College is one of seven colleges in Wyoming's community college system. The campus was mostly quiet Saturday morning. Fathers and sons shot hoops in the school gym. A small group of drama students rehearsed a play in the school theater just across the street from the attack.

The building where the attack happened remained cordoned off by police tape that whipped in a brisk wind. A security guard let students back in, one at a time, to retrieve belongings they'd left behind.

Andra Charter, a 20-year-old sophomore, emerged with a coffee mug. She recalled hearing screams outside her biology class before getting word about what had happened.

"As we were walking out, there was a girl screaming, 'There's somebody stabbing Mr. Krumm!'" Charter said.

James Krumm was head of the college's computer science department. He was born north of London and also spent part of his childhood in Germany, according to the college website.

He held degrees from Casper College, a bachelor's degree and MBA from the University of Wyoming and a master's in computer science from Colorado State University.

Arnold held a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Oregon and a bachelor's degree in math from University of California Davis.

The college planned a candlelight vigil and memorial service Tuesday.
